not sure how I never thought to google this before, but today I learned why ctrl-s/ctrl-q exist, other than to make using the terminal 100 times more difficult.

Fascinating bit of computer history!

I recently attempted to explain to my daughter how the phone used to work, and I’ve never felt like more of a fossil.

I had to explain what the dial tone is. She’s never heard a dial tone.

travissouthard,
@travissouthard@jawns.club avatar

@cschrader In thinking about this, I'm surprised we never had a skeumorphic dial tone on phones so that people wouldn't think it was broken

Hey , utlitity shutoffs have been allowed again about a month ago.
Cutting off people's access to water, heating/cooling, and electricity will not make it easier for them to pay their bills but it will make their lives more dangerous.

I've been using my de-Googled GrapheneOS "phone" (no SIM card) around the house.
What it revealed to me is how easily I defaulted to proprietary Google products throughout my Android experience, even though they are completely at odds with my values. Without the convenience of apps baked into the OS by the same manufacturer, I suddenly want replacements for all my Google things. I'm even reevaluating trivial things like a weather forecast widget, where I previously said "good enough" & moved on.

@travissouthard@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller What weather app are you liking? I remember searching but not finding anything that checked all my boxes

Do I know anyone on here affected by the Open Collective Foundation dissolution? Code for Philly uses OCF as our fiscal sponsor and we are looking to connect with other affected orgs as we work to find a new fiscal sponsor setup.

Are @iffybooks or @phillycommunitywireless using OCF?

Anyone need an unopened Google Daydream View headset? They killed the platform before I could open the box. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Daydream

I'll also throw in a used Google Cardboard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Cardboard

Free if you can pick them up in person in Philly. And even if you don't want them, I'd really appreciate any ideas for using them instead of throwing them out.

UPDATE: Gone to a good home, thank you Jawns!

I am currently watching Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and I’m happy to report it holds up very well.

Rewatching a kids movie from the 80s is a risky move because it could be super problematic in various ways, but this is so pure

Which is to say, there’s not a lot of room for the ART BARF ROBOT to come in and BARF ART all up into this connection."

Anyone have a good source to see current road & trail closures in ?

Can anyone explain to me why more goods and services aren't produced by non-profits?

I understand that with planned obsolescence, companies that build long-lasting objects will tend to be driven out by cheap shitty objects that have economies of scale. It seems to me that dropping the profit motive would allow some non-competitive strategies to survive.

Of course non-profits fail and shut down all the time, but because they have different pressures on them, you'd think they'd be good hedges.

travissouthard,
@travissouthard@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller Nationalize production of basic needs?

Genuinely I like your idea. Especially since companies that make things like hearing aids just disappear.

Along those lines, companies that make and distribute cheap goods often exploit (or sometimes enslave) their laborers and it’d be nice to find a market/communal solution for that since governments do not care to stop those practices

travissouthard,
@travissouthard@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller Non-profits largely exist at the pleasure of the wealthy (often specifically to shield their wealth). That system is there to make the rich feel good, not to help anyone else. Actual helpfulness is often coincidental or by the hard work of individual orgs

Shopping in the snow yesterday.

Yes, we finally bought a show shovel. We made it two years by borrowing the neighbor's snow shovel, and I'm not convinced we'll need a shovel this year either, but I figure buying a snow shovel will cause the snow to not accumulate, so it's still worth the investment.

Was I cold? Absolutely. I wasn't sure if the snow would turn to rain, so I prioritized water resistant clothing over warmth, but I probably would have been fine with snow gear instead.

travissouthard,
@travissouthard@jawns.club avatar

@skyfaller What a suit! I have found that water/wind resistance is the key, but I tend to generate a lot of heat so a shell over a warm layer is often all I need (and quality gloves).
