I've gotten into reading again lately, turns out it's just as addicitng as a phone (I seem to have time management issues).
I startet posting on , however the webinterface is not fun to use on a small device.

Is there an app? I know of https://f-droid.org/packages/nl.privacydragon.bookwyrm/ , but that's just a webview.

cc @joel I happen to know you use bookwyrm. How do you use it and on what device?

v7.0 was just released! Get it at https://forgejo.org/download/. 🚀

Forgejo v7.0 is available with translations in Bulgarian, Esperanto, Filipino and Slovenian; SourceHut builds integration; support for the SHA-256 hash function in Git; source code search by default and more. It also is the first Long Term Support version. The adoption of semantic versioning is the reason for the version bump from v1.21 to v7.0 and is compatible with existing tools. ✨

@forgejo AFAIK federation (Forgejo's main selling point) is still not a thing, after years now? What's the progress on that?

tobtobxx,
@tobtobxx@fosstodon.org avatar

@danielsiepmann
> Did you read the post? It has a section about that:

I didn't read the article as I'm solely interested in finally having a federated code forge. So I checked the site's FAQ, where they still list it as "on the roadmap" despite being the "primary goal" (to be frank, Forgejo is an MVP without the P).

While writing a response, I realized it was going to be big. So I wrote a blog post. I will respond to the emotional part of your answer here, but please see my blog post at the end.

> Your messages make me sad and are discouraging. Is that what you hoped for?

No, absolutely not. I would very much like to apologize for offending you; I'm sorry, it was not my intention.

@earlwarren

I do think that my criticism to the Forgejo project is valid. But I know how open-source works, so I really don't want anyone to be blamed for that criticism. I'd guess most of the maintainers and contributors are awesome and passionate people. This is just the 2c of a random dude on the internet.

> You can mock me and others publicly for not getting there faster, of course.

No I absolutely may not, it is not acceptable to mock people. I don't even pay or contribute to Forgejo, but even if I did, I would have no right to do that. I tried to avoid blaming anyone, but apparently I failed, I apologize for that. Still, I think my point stands, but I want to get it across without hurting anyone.

Once again, I am sorry for demotivating you. I wanted to talk about what could be better for Forgejo, but I could have done so more clearly.

did you know? 500 is a number that means a different depending on the fediverse software

  • mastodon: character limit
  • pleroma: error
  • misskey: number of fork
  • gotosocial: number of days before 1.0
  • peertube: server cost per month

@lanodan Oooohhh... but not everywhere. In Switzerland prices are getting out of hand. If you get a small apartment for less than 1000€/month you are quite lucky!

@kev Thank you.

Threads federating is a great thing! If they really do fully federate, people could migrate from Threads to wherever without the thought of "but all the people I follow aren't on platform B!". (Whether you will be able to move accounts as easily as Mastodon allows (with keeping followers and stuff), I doubt.)

How come I've never heard of uBlock Origin until a few weeks ago? Seriously, that thing is superior to every adblocker ever, at least as I see it.

IT BLOCKS SPOTIFY ADS. WHAT BETTER ADBLOCKER THAN ONE THAT BLOCKS SPOTIFY ADS?

tobtobxx,

@writeblankspace It also blocks YoiTube ads. Honestly, I can't watch yt without it.

I'm thinking about getting some dedicated hardware to be a home server instead of just using an old laptop (that used to be my distro-experimentation laptop—a role I'd love it to resume). Any suggestions? I'm currently thinking I'll get a refurbished ThinkCenter.

@sandro You are right but mind the second part:

> [...] often with some terrifying hacks involved.

Porting a program from Debian or Arch to Nix is a LOT more difficult, than say from Debian to Arch or whatever.

Some of that may be inherent complexity for Nix' dependency model, but it's definitely a significant hurdle.

Soooo... I went through the last 3mo of my Gmail account to see which accounts still use it and I had to migrate 4 accounts.

Not 100% sure, but I think there is no account left using my gmail account. I don't need to delete it, but if the big G wants to block it... I wouldn't care lol.

250GB of storage (mind you that compresses and deduplicates) for $24/year.

Ok, for the first time in like 3 years, my Arch install broke down completely now. Can't upgrade packages. Something to do with infra migration probably.

#NixOS migration coming tomorrow? 👀

tobtobxx,
@tobtobxx@fosstodon.org avatar

Ok, basic setup of #nixos completed.

Day 1 feeling: I don't like it at all.
You're just toggling a couple of options from a set of thousands of premade. Each option you set you just hope it doesn't download a bunch of crap or impact something else, all the while you have to keep searching for the "optimal" way to archieve a goal, since there are multiple.

tobtobxx,
@tobtobxx@fosstodon.org avatar

Also, its options are stuck in the past. You setup the gnome server through an option called "xserver". And you also have to enable "xserver". Enabling anything called "xserver" makes me extremely anxious. What about Wayland?? Some unofficial forum post wrote, that it supports Wayland regardless of the name "xserver" (??!). That's true, but now I have all the crappy x stuff installed.
