So this will be weirdly specific.

Anyone have any experience using a Yaesu FTM-300DR for packet radio? For bonus points, with a digirig?

Before I go buying things I want to make sure what I plan on will work, and I think the manual leaves a few details out.

#HamRadio #AmateurRadio #PacketRadio #Yaesu #YaesuFTM300D #DigiRig

@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

To elaborate: there's a digirig cable that breaks out the 10-pin data connector to a serial line and an audio line (typical for digirig) and it claims that it can be used for 9600 baud packet.

  • Looking at the pinout of that connector, it seems it has one data in line, and one 1200 out, one 9600 out. So I assume that means that the menu setting for 1200/9600 determines if it's using AFSK/GMSK and how often to sample the data line for bits.
  • How does this map on the digirig side? Does that mean that if I select 1200 baud on the radio then it can't receive it since that's on a different pin?
  • There's a PC serial tx/rx pair but next to no documentation on that. What's that supposed to be used for? I don't think this one supports CAT control.
  • Is the radio expecting raw serial bits? Everything I have that can send to a serial port is expecting KISS, which I don't think it would be too happy about.
  • There's an "SCU-20" USB connection cable. What capabilities does that have?

Holy ****

The in was so big Tuesday that it required a new description

Forecasters warned of “DVD-size hail” as stones larger than grapefruits bombarded an area near Lubbock.

@kegill Americal will use literally anything to avoid the metric system

(even better, I'm a weather spotter. We actually have a standardized list of objects, most of which are sports balls of some kind, to describe hail sizes. Because something that is a uniform 2D cross section from all angles, and a regulation size, is very handy to reference)

Anyone got shell accounts to an OpenBSD server I can get an invite to? (Not privileged or anything/teensy quota is fine)

Just wanted to have a shell account I can learn on. I do have an OpenBSD machine at home, but my PineBook is realistically Linux-only. OpenBSD will run, but the framebuffer doesn't work (yet?), so I think it's just "hope xenodm works, otherwise debug with a serial cable" ;)

P.S. I think I was looking in the wrong place. There is a list here: https://tildeverse.org/members/

tek_dmn,
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@RL_Dane do I have one? No. Am I capable of setting up a VPS for you? Absolutely. 32 GB disk, two core, 4 GB RAM sound fine?

tek_dmn, (edited )
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@RL_Dane Eh, they take all of like 60 seconds to create or tear down.

Reminder: I'm not the one that buys the VPSes. I'm the one with the hardware that runs them. Handing out slices of my compute time takes barely any time and no money

So, people, question for you!

This is an AnyTone 578UVIII PLUS. It's currently off. The activity light is blue. That's not ever described in the manual. That light goes cyan when receiving DMR, but not pure blue.

Furthermore, it only does this like a minute after I start the car. Only if the car has been idle for some time.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? This isn't documented, like, anywhere. It's one of those things where you search for it and it sounds like you're the only person in the world with the problem.

@mike_k Radio's off. I don't think it would be pairing anything while out cold..

--

You're not 100% off though, those are bluetooth capable. But they just have an on-screen pairing notification since they're the primary. (You can pair earbuds to them, I think, at least you can do that with the handhelds, but there's also a wireless mic / remote head that they go with)

I have no clue how, but every single USPS package that I order, always gets to the local post office on Sunday, and therefore gets delayed a day. Why even.

I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

tek_dmn,
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@grimalkina So, time to be a reply-guy.

I think part of it is that the context is expected around the person and not the post, for whatever reason, people want to know everything about you and what you stand for, what your opinions are, what led you to some decision or path, but within actual conversation that falls away.

@doskel this is why I like Ruff as my linter. It'll generate all sorts of warnings for Python language features that you'd never think to use unless you saw them, and once you use them you ask why Python even exists. 😆

This is, hands down, the most beautiful in my collection at the moment. It is a Ryan Krusac Studios Legend L-16 "Kraken" fitted with a Fountain Pen Revolution 14kt gold Ultra Flex nib with an ebonite feed and inked up with Namiki Blue. The scrimshaw body is naturally shed moose antler (not something I'd usually be into but it makes an amazing canvas and feels lovely), the cap is Bolivian rosewood, and the section is ebonite. I am madly in love with this pen and so happy I added it to my collection.

this is a super cool protocol and i really need to get into it but the naming alone is great
https://cats.radio/
cats packets are composed of whiskers that are connected to the internet via the felinet

tek_dmn,
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@doskel Unfortunately, like, it's cool but I think I see two main issues with it.

  1. AFSK over FM is inefficient but it allows any commodity radio to be used for APRS. Direct FSK means you now need a USB capable transmitter or one with an exposed data port, something that's much more rare. You ever used APRSDroid, The Cable™️, and a Baofeng with VOX enabled?
  2. It's going to end up causing a split-brain if it takes off. It'll never supplant APRS, so we'll have two separate, incompatible protocols to serve the same purpose in an endless struggle to find a decisively superior one. Just like echolink and all-star.

But yes, that naming is amazing.

tek_dmn,
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@doskel at least where I am, a baofeng GT-5R (the slightly better model) and cable come out to just under $50 before tax.

Though with DAPNET being a thing, UHF FSK is useful to have, that is true

tek_dmn,
@tek_dmn@mastodon.tekdmn.me avatar

@doskel you can get GT-5Rs off Amazon for like $23 in this part of the US

That's almost cheaper than unlicensed radios 😆

What would it take to build a LoTW replacement?

What about a print on demand service for QSL cards that replaces the bureau?

And do we have enough engaged, technically adept, and interesting hams out here in this Fedi space to put together a monthly web magazine of sorts filled with the stuff that we want to read?

I know there was talk before. I'm wondering if we really need to wait for the big org to fail before we start.
