im tempted to rec fedora workstation to my friends because that's what I'm most familiar with, but what if theyre(?who?) right and the ubuntu ones are better for newbs? I mean I started there too. I can't remember if it actually made it easier than if I just started with fedora from the get go

squeakybeaver,

@kalayo
The only real reason I hesitate to recommend fedora is because of media codecs.
It's really easy if you look at rpmfusion's guide, but a lot of newbies are incredibly scared of the magic black hacker box (the terminal)

Why is the default way for word mutes to display on #Sharkey and how do I get it to show me which filter triggered the hiding? On ice shrimp, it would say (for example) "someone said /NSFW/" if it matched my /NSFW/ word mute

I wonder if the squirrel would dehydrate first

True, true
What if we gave it a tiny space suit so it's an astronaut (and we also assume it wouldn't burn up while falling)

lmao I used bunny ear profile decorations to make it look like my PFP has whiskers

I've a question I'm hoping someone can answer:

If you import posts from an instance into a *key instance you are moving to, do your followers get spammed by all your imports? Can you import posts into Misskey?

Thank you!

squeakybeaver,

@geraineon I remember this happening to like transfem.social a little bit ago
I'm not sure if the bug has been fixed yet

My #firefox and #duckduckgo experiment is going well. But email feels like a bigger commitment along this #degoogle path. I looked at the usual suspects like Proton, Mailfence, Fastmail,etc. I also ran across #disroot (https://disroot.org). This is much more than just email! They offer #NextCloud #Cryptpad #Jitsi and all sorts of other stuff. A group of loosely aggregated open source stuff, and feels less seamless as a result. But definitely interesting. Anyone have any experience with them?

squeakybeaver,

@brian small thing, but https://deroot.org leads to some weird website. I think you meant https://disroot.org ?

hey folks, here to see if this instance is a better fit than tech.lgbt.
I'm keen on all things science, conservation, and queer rights particularly in the Aotearoa political sphere. drop me a follow if that sounds like the kind of material you might be keen on!

CW and alt text will be used liberally

squeakybeaver,

@vibrantdragon
TIL what Aotearoa is (I will never be able to spell it)

hey fellow blahajers: is it just me, or does adding a content warning to a boost not do anything? I've tried it twice now, but it seems like it's still displaying the boosted posts verbatim.

squeakybeaver,

@lapis I looked back at my boosts (I know I've added a cw to at least one) and I can't find any cw's added
maybe it's a bug that'll be fixed soon

squeakybeaver,

@lapis okay so looking at the hajkey features, it might be because of cw boosts not being supported on most instances

In case anyone needs it: BMI requirements for gender-affirming care lack an empirical basis, do not predict outcomes, increase the likelihood of eating disorders among trans people, fail to result in trans patients losing and maintaining weightloss, and basically just serves as a way to deny trans people healthcare.

squeakybeaver,

@melissagreen @JoscelynTransient

BMI should only be used for that one very basic example I see so many programming tutorials use (they tell you to create a BMI calculator)
Beyond that, it's just a number that looks just science enough for people to think it's a good indicator of how healthy you are.
