oh god, the new work laptop has a 15"4k screen

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@nosherwan that's what she said 😏😔

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber no solution for that

VSCode on is not worth the trouble.

s/ on //

I mean, a text editor... in electron.
And a MS product... on linux.

I pity the fool. :P

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane it's the best free almost IDE available

I'm going to work on a Linux laptop!
I resisted to use a Mac 😎

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber

I've heard its only about a 30% performance loss (max) to disable HT.
If doing so would let you disable some mitigations, it might be worth looking into.

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane I could disable the mitigations 😏

VS Code: 800MB RAM
Sublime Text: 58 MB RAM

😅

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@qlp @thelinuxcast they also run laguage servers, which makes it heavier too.

qlp,
@qlp@linh.social avatar

@sirber @thelinuxcast Not to mention, any additional extensions, themes or other customization layered on top would have it even heavier.

As heavy as it is in RAM and CPU, it fits my workflow the best. There are times where I will jump between VS Code and PyCharm, but I prefer the former.

I'm getting good at not getting jobs...

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber That sucks.

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber you still have the current one?

sirber, to linux
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

a Writer document in doesn't render the same on and , even if I embed the fonts...

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@johkra graphic drivers shouldn't mess with paging ,IMO

libreoffice,
@libreoffice@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber @johkra Hi! There's definitely something not right there, as the fonts are clearly not matching. Are you using the same version of LibreOffice on both platforms? Can you please let our QA community at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org know with a quick bug report, including the screenshot? Thanks 😊

sirber, to javascript
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

Nice! #bun #javascript runtime works on non AVX2 cpu now!

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber what are you using non AVX2 cpu for.

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

@nosherwan my crappy netbook doesn't have it. It's a Celeron N4020.

I'm starting a 22h course on C#.
outside is dying...

Skoop,
@Skoop@phpc.social avatar

@sirber might be a geographic difference. We had a bit of a low point here in The Netherlands, but I'm seeing a lot of PHP work again now

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @sirber @Skoop I miss PHP every day I have to deal with Spring Boot, JPA, Hibernate, and that whole cluster*.

sirber, to php
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

What do you think of Codeigniter? #php

#webdev

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@sirber The Laravel of the 2000s. That is not a complement.

sirber, to php
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

I forgot how fun it is to develop with . It's sad that most of the jobs with it are WordPress related 😒

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell @sirber I hold the same opinion about the JVM ecosystem but would love to work with Kotlin one day, it seems clean and modern.

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @sirber It's honestly the most boring modern language. Java with less crappy syntax. There's some bits of it that are weird, but otherwise it's just kinda... Fine? Not exciting or interesting, just... Fine.

sirber, to php
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

I started a prototype of a framework-less #php architecture, using #docker, on my playground. Separated public and private files, enabled autoloading using composer and PSR-4. It's fun! 😀

https://gitlab.com/sirber/playground/-/tree/main/php/pure?ref_type=heads

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@sirber Isn't that the same as a custom framework? :-)

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@sirber You need a frame.work laptop for a custom framework.

sirber, to Laravel
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

#Laravel / Eloquent looks way easier than #nestjs / typeorm and #go / #gin / #gorm 😅

#php #webdev

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@sirber Pretty good overall, but does have a bit higher curve. If Laravel cribs from Ruby on Rails, Symfony is inspired by Java Spring Boot. When I want a major framework I usually go Symfony.

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@sirber Oh, and on the faux decorators, those are Annotations. Hack to do the in docsblocks.

PHP now has native attributes and basically everyone who matters has switched over to them. Much nicer, natively supported.

sirber, to python
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

I think it's better to learn #python than catch up on #php? 🤔

sirber,
@sirber@fosstodon.org avatar

It's sad that I see almost no job in #golang.

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@sirber I would dispute the "nice" part... It's a collection of antipatterns in a trenchcoat.
