Lately I found myself to be swiping to hide lots of feed posts on this app (Ran into too many diaspora content that’s geographically irrelevant to me)

And it finally pushed me to actually use the hidden words feature to hide them once and for all. The experience is more pleasant now 😌

@wongmjane does threads federate both ways now?

She has a real good example of how algorithms on platforms like Instagram not only try to make you addicted but also divide us even more

I real LOVE the fact Mastodon and most of the Fediverse software avoids this all together

A girl explaining comments shown on an example Instagram posts. It looks at your age, gender, interests and serves comments based on that.

@LevelUp @stux fedi also has a massive hivemind.
Look at the hate the dude got for building the bluesky bridge or there was a even better example where somebody build their own activitypub server and people thought its a crawler and harassed them till they entirely quit fedi

@stux @mekkaokereke and if someone from my instance is following or boosting the comments. That's probably a pretty big factor too.
Unless you use a client like moshiodon that fetches comments from the origin instance as well

The #fediverse is probably better at building filter bubbles (showing you content you agree with) than traditional social media.
Your home feed really only shows you opinions from people you follow. Who follows people they don't like?

For sites like Twitter somebody suggested the term "filterclash", they serve content you don't agree with to increase engagement like commenting or quote posting to dunk on people.

The Fediverse is probably more similar how discussions are held in offline...

Where you mostly hear opinions of people you know and probably like as we don't tend to hangout with people we don't like.
The local and federated timelines could be equivalent to a place like work, where you have to engage with other people but one probably only does this very limited.

These filter bubbles probably are better for mental health and might be better for discussions than the filter clash. But they have the serious down turn, that people are less aware of other opinions and...

How popular other opinions are. I Germany very very recently and a really big protest wave against racism and fat right oriented people were pretty confused on how many people attended these, how many people have a different opinion to them. In their bubble the opinion that racism is bad is just not prevalent so they expected its not.
And tbh same for me, every time their is an election I wonder who would vote for AFD or CDU. I personally know just a single person.

Telegram often because...

Supposedly there are a lot of extremest and conspiracy believes. Telegram up until very recently had no algorithm at all. (Now just small, pretty hidden recommendations for similar channels) You just follow channels and groups you are interested in and they might refer your to more.
This filter bubble behavior is probably what makes this possible.

I've been using DuckDuckGo as my main search engine for a while now. Lately, DDG seems to "correct" my searches. A LOT. I don't know if it's just me or if it's a universal thing, but when I type in a search sometimes not only the results aren't what I was looking for, but I see the query itself has been changed to something I didn't actually search for. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating. I just might have to find a new search engine if this keeps up.

shadowwwind,

@thefossguy @mike also @Mojeek , awesome crawler search engine. They are pretty active on the fediverse, privacy respecting and don't dabble in blockchain

@bitterblossom @mike what? Do you have a source for that?
