Interested (but not exclusively) in: #Scotland #dogs #gardening #geology #photography, #ScottishPolitics #ScottishIndependence. Member of our #CommunityWoodland management group.

Retired from career in IT, but very interested in #DataSecurity #InfoSec.

Really interested in people/orgs who have practical, hands on, experience of mitigating #ClimateChange. Have less time for people/orgs who tell us to do x, y or z to mitigate climate change - but have not done it themselves.

Commercialisation of Charities - a few thoughts - a 🧵

First, a story:
Over 25 years ago we got a new bed and wanted rid of our old one. But our normal thing is to keep our "old" stuff until we can give it to someone who wants/needs it. But, a work colleague approached me, took a big deep breath and told me this:
My nephew has a girlfriend and she's pregnant and he's just got out of prison. They've got a social housing place but no furniture. How much do want for your bed? 1/?

@Wen someone else has told me about Freecycle - I didn't know they existed. Will definitely try them if I have things in the future.

Green Party representation in Holyrood relies heavily on list votes from, predominantly, SNP supporters who won't look kindly on them for, as they see it, sabotaging the BHA. This means there's little likelihood of a pro-independence majority at the next election.

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@iaruffell @alanferrier I'm trying to understand the Greens lending their vote part.

Surely the only time Greens would vote in a constituency for another party is if they weren't standing a candidate themselves?

So, if that is the case may I ask who they would vote for rather than lend to the SNP?

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@Alternatecelt @iaruffell @alanferrier yes, that's what I was wondering. I don't think my constituency has ever had a Green stand. And I can understand that would be when they'd "lend a vote". I was really just wondering what the alternatives were in terms of policy etc if the SNP are out of the equation. I know many people, like yourself, indy is the dividing line. But wondered if there were any other issues that were also dividing lines?

Clarity on Wood Burning Stoves Urgently Needed

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant has written to the Scottish Government seeking clarity on the new building standards concerning wood burning stoves. In her letter Rhoda Grant has called for the Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Patrick Harvie to provide detail on who can apply for exemptions to the ban, in addition to how the SNP-Green Government came to the decision on the ban and what impact assessments…

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@adrianfry @Wen @fionaorkneynews I think it says "emergency heating" and doesn't specify how frequently you have to have powercuts before it applies. Well I hope that's how it will be read. We've had more powercuts in our village in the last year than we had in the previous 10-20 years.

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen @adrianfry @fionaorkneynews Yes, I'm really concerned about the insulation aspect. 25% of Scottish homes are of a construction where its not easy, and will be very expensive, to retro-fit insulation in walls & underfloor. 25% is a sizeable minority.

@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar
sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen @adrianfry @fionaorkneynews Ours is timber-framed with no wall or floor insulation. We've looked into insulating floor & walls. For all these the insulation would have to be for timber-framed properties.

For walls - 3 options:
A remove all the outside brickwork, or
B similar to what you've done (but that would have implications for rooms eg bathroom & kitchen etc with fitted units as they'd no longer fit.)
C New breathable foam - only 1 buildsoc approves for mortgage as jury is out on 1/2

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen @adrianfry @fionaorkneynews 2/2 whether it would cause the timber frame to rot.

For the floor: all our floor coverings and floors would have to be lifted.

We simply don't have the funds to do a complete renovation like this. So, feel like we'll be just left behind.

Looked into ASHP funding - won't get it until we insulate.

sfscotland,
@sfscotland@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen @adrianfry @fionaorkneynews Totally. A big, nationwide program of insulation. Imagine how many jobs that could create. Then, there's the reduction in people's energy bills. Resolve all the problems - social and health related caused by poor housing. A healthier population allows the NHS to change its treatment priorites too. Everyone benefits.

But still Westminster carries on with their destructive economically illiterate policies.

I've paid an only slightly above zero amount of attention to the smoking ban story but has anyone asked how exactly the hole in the tax revenue is going to be plugged?

@Roadwarrior29 @fkamiah17 From next April what cars will have no road tax? Currently for evs are £0 but will be charged next year? In fact, as many are over £40k they will be paying road tax in the luxury bracket. Much cheaper in £ to get a low emissions diesel with road tax of £30.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Noticed that #TheHighlandCouncil are listing road closures around the following:
#Beauly #Dores #Abriachan #Inverness (Diriebught Road & Balloan Road), #Sunnyside #Croy #CullodenMoor #Daviot #Kiltarlity #BrockiesLodge #BeaufortCastle #Errogie #Whitebridge #Budgate

Local knowledge: #DunglassRoad #Brahan near the stables also closed due to landslip

Alternative route for #Abriachan - 154 mile diversion.

Stay safe out there.

Surely the sensible thing to do with the would be to move it to London Embankment and use it to house Tory MPs? It would save a HUGE amount of money in expenses.

OK people in . I'm looking for a few days holiday in the East of Scotland next summer - either , or areas.
Want a pet-friendly hotel with easy access to or to exercise dog. Happy to pay a bit extra for dog - but not the £50 per day some are asking. Want a hotel that also serves evening meal.

Any suggestions?

Cutting floorboards for the #roundhouse, and I've just cut five square metres of (by our standards) really nice quality flooring from a single log. Small wins!

Beautiful, straight, even, new sawn planks on the stack beside the sawmill bed.
