@awi 's EM-Bird can measure sea ice thickness from a helicopter: today Janna from our group learned to operate the instrument over the Jade Bight (North Sea). Great weather, but sadly, 0 cm sea ice! 😉

It's now a full month since the sea ice minimum this year and still hardly any new ice has formed in the Bellingshausen Sea (lower left in image).
People speculate about when the first "blue ocean event" will occur in the Arctic. In this sector of the Southern Ocean they're already happening.

@PoLaRobs On the other hand, the sea ice in the Amundsen Sea is growing relatively quickly. Maybe I should split this calculation of regional sea ice extent to get a better overview of the Bellingshausen Sea.

@seaice Ach jetzt sehe ich erst das der Tracker auch die Höhe anzeigt. Tja, da das Ding aerodynamsich eher subobtimal gebaut ist könnte es schneller unten sein als geplant. Aber ich denke mal einen Durchgang über Deutschland schafft es.

Zur Diskussion um den möglicherweise erreichten Meereis-Kipppunkt in der Antarktis gibt es jetzt zwei neue Veröffentlichungen.
Sie deuten beide auf sich selbst beschleunigende Veränderungen im Südozean.
Allerdings sind solche Indizien schwer zu bewerten, weil es aus der Antarktis wenig Daten gibt und die Zusammenhänge viel komplexer sind als im Norden.
