It's now a full month since the #Antarctic sea ice minimum this year and still hardly any new ice has formed in the Bellingshausen Sea (lower left in image).
People speculate about when the first "blue ocean event" will occur in the Arctic. In this sector of the Southern Ocean they're already happening.

As I've explained before, I'd prefer not to see the "Doomsday Glacier" tag line in the title of every news article about Thwaites Glacier, but anyhow here's how CNN reported on our latest paper.

The ‘Doomsday Glacier’ is rapidly melting. Scientists now have evidence for when it started and why | CNN https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/26/climate/doomsday-glacier-antarctic-ice-melt-climate-intl/index.html

Rather than making a fuss about funding "running out" I'd say we're now at a stage where we need to assess what we've learnt, formulate a plan for the next phase of research, and then persuade funding agencies to support it. But the research topic has huge societal importance and really merits a lot more support.

If you don't find this concerning, you really don't understand how bad things are getting. Yes, there's an El Niño at the moment, but the sea surface temperature anomaly has never been so extreme during previous El Niños.

Still a couple of weeks to go until Antarctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum this year, and it could yet surpass last year's record low.

On this date 10 years ago we were coming towards the end of a few days surveying and collecting sediment cores in a cross-shelf trough west of the #Antarctic Peninsula that was carved by a past ice stream. On the final day of work we were treated to glorious weather with fantastic views of Anvers and Brabant islands.

PoLaRobs,

We were originally allocated 10 days for this work on RRS James Clark Ross, but this was reduced to 8 as a result of earlier delays affecting the ship's itinerary. Nevertheless, the small science team shown here did a great job and we completed all our main objectives.

PoLaRobs,

We collected the survey data and cores to gain a better understanding of the the dynamics of the ice stream that had flowed along the trough and how it had retreated after the last glacial period. In those few days we collected a bathymetry dataset that is probably still the most complete coverage of an Antarctic palaeo-ice stream bed.
3/n

PoLaRobs,

Detailed examination of features revealed by the bathymetry dataset highlighted how water supply to the ice stream bed had been a key factor in controlling its flow, and that a large, deep subglacial lake on the inner shelf had been important as a source of water, which it probably released episodically. PoLaRobs,

PoLaRobs,

We had actually intended to study glacial troughs further south along the Antarctic Peninsula, but had to go this far north to get clear of sea ice so that we could collect survey data efficiently. In contrast there is no sea ice left on the continental shelf west of the Antarctic Peninsula today.

When you see statements like this you know you're being lied to. What's been agreed at #COP28 certainly does not keep 1.5°C in reach.

Many immersed in climate matters may overestimate how closely most of the general public follow what is going on in this space. A couple of weeks ago I set a pub quiz and included a round I called "Talking Climate". There were five teams, each formed of knowledgeable people from the Cambridge area who regularly compete in pub quizzes. I was surprised by the generally low scores in this round. The round consisted of 10 questions ...

Here's your Friday ice update. Have a great weekend! #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 15th lowest on record (JAXA data)...

• about 300,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 350,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 980,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,460,000 km² below the 1980s mean

PoLaRobs,

@ZLabe Meanwhile the Antarctic sea-ice extent anomaly has decreased leaving the current extent ONLY about a million sq. km less than at the same date in any previous year 😱

We're approaching the end of a year which has seen record global average atmospheric temperatures and sea surface temperatures, and record minimum Antarctic sea-ice extent. Scientists have repeatedly warned of the serious adverse consequences if temperatures rise to more than 2°C above pre-industrial ones, and that substantial risks escalate after exceeding 1.5°C. And today we have this.

PoLaRobs,

@weddige @Grandalf In 2023 it's becoming increasingly difficult to understand how anyone who takes an objective look at observations and scientific results can be a sceptic. Most must either know they are trying to deceive people or be living with extreme cognitive dissonance.

Maybe you all knew about this, but @davidho has just introduced me to this useful tool for expanding your Mastondon world:

https://followgraph.vercel.app/#searchForm

It looks at the people you follow and the people they follow and ranks them by the number of follows from your followed. Hopefully you will find some people who were on here all along but who you hadn't found yet - I did.

PoLaRobs,

@helenczerski @davidho Fantastic. I just followed many people I found using this tool and this promises to make me feed a lot more interesting
