I somehow missed this huge news. Probably due to more important stuff like poop balloons.

#US state department has acknowledged the existence of the #jeju massacre/genocide for first time since it happened.

Not apologized, not launched investigations or prosecutions, merely admits that a "tragedy" "happened" (under the command of US Army Colonel Rothwell Brown).

I guess you all saw that? No? Oh well.

Sending gunships into another countries waters is no big deal but...

POOP BALLOONS!!!

That got everyone's attention...

Should North Korea stop sending the balloons?

Absolutely not, regardless of any danger they may cause, regardless of opposition of people who live in the area, because that would be "an excessive restriction on free speech" according to south korean courts.

So i guess North Korea must uphold human rights and continue sending the balloons south, right?

Sending bibles is vital work, definitely worth the risk of retaliation, the actual retaliation, the danger posed to north koreans whose land the balloons might fall on when they're found to possess contraband that they didn't ask for.

"South Korea (MNN) — South Korea’s Constitutional Court recently overturned a 2020 law that stopped people from sending anti-regime information to North Korea."

VOM: "When we asked what we could do to help, the underground church didn’t ask for food or freedom. They asked for tools so that they could continue and expand their work of proclaiming the gospel."

Yes, these are the good guys.

North Korean defector Lee Min-bok said that Park has jeopardized the entire balloon campaign by provoking both governments, “[the] extremely provocative language in Park Sang-hak's leaflets has nothing to do with promoting North Korean human rights, but is tailored to please conservatives and provoke progressives in the South...[he] wants to become a hero by going to prison for fighting this law”.

But it's all serving a purpose right? What noble goal are we pursuing?

"There has been a steady stream of angry declarations and threats [threatening to] turn South Korea into debris."

"These declarations are just more evidence of how critically important these messages from the free world are"

Ah, so it makes them angry, and it prevents negotiations from succeeding. That is the avowed goal...

"At this time of great uncertainty, we must ask ourselves on whose side we want to stand: those who reach out with concern to the North Korean people with messages of truth, hope, and love, or do we want to stand on the side of Kim Jong-il, the man responsible for genocide against the people of North Korea."

Ibid.

Yes, well said, but dick-flicking them until they stop talking to you isn't achieving any of that is it...

#Korea #NorthKorea

scaramanga,

So what is it acheiving?

VOM again: 'People think about “North Korea Ministry” as supplying to North Korea what it lacks: food, human rights, and even movies on USB and DVDs. But VOM Korea’s North Korean ministry begins with what North Korea has: one of the strongest churches in the world, growing faster than the South Korean church.'

Oh, it's achieving a fast-growing church.

And preventing peace.

And "trolling teh libtards"

Good? I guess? Is it?

leader of "Fighters for a Free North Korea" was asked to comment on the situation when the balloon launches to the north were banned.

He assaulted the journalists with a brick. One was hospitalized with a concussion. When police showed up, he attacked them with pepper spray.

A two year prison sentence was recommended.

Video contains violence.

"It is said that the tree of peace lives off blood and that freedom is not free. Somebody has to sacrifice themselves, so if I'm killed by Kim Jong Un’s gun, it'll be an honor." --

Presumably that also includes the blood of journalists whose head you've smashed in with bricks...

Okay, he's a passionate anti-communist!

#ParkSangHak is actually a north korean defector who lived a privileged life as a high-ranking part of the North Korean elite. He left during the famine, thanks to the wealth and connections of his family.

Apparently family members who were left behind were murdered or severely punished for this. Which is awful stuff.

But what's striking is how easily former North Korean regime members seem to slot into south korean conservatism.

An excellent demonstration of the "rules based international order"

Japan conquers chinese tribunate Ryūkyū Kingdom, then when Japan is defeated, the US draws an imaginary line between #yonaguni and #taiwan ...

#japan #china continued..

scaramanga,
@scaramanga@union.place avatar

To the east of the line, territory can be acquired by conquest, and all conquered "chinese" terrtory is returned to #japan

Sure, #china conquered it from natives in the 14th century or whatever, but no American can begrudge them that and still believe in the legitimacy of USA, amirite.

#japan did great work in suppressing native culture and language and transferring their own population in there so to the victor the spoils i guess!

And Okinawa is a great spot for the US navy, so that's nice

scaramanga,
@scaramanga@union.place avatar

To the west of the line, in #taiwan, territory cannot be acquired by #china (14th century) conquest (or communist revolution) but can be acquired by KMT conquest including massacre of tens of thousands of natives. No problemo!

Certainly no need to revert anything to an antebellum status quo like to the east of the line. Time to move forward and just call an election.

If we apply the same rules in eastern #ukraine? The conquest is old news, what matters is democracy for Donbas, right?

and, in fairness, most western commentators fail to understand that in return for "paying for South Korea's defence" that they are in direct command of the South Korean military (the moment that war breaks out).

It would be fair to say that South Korea does not even have a military. What exists is a US foreign auxiliary legion.

South Korea spends a crippling 2.7% of GDP for defence. Including a billion dollar fee for being occupied by US troops.

scaramanga,
@scaramanga@union.place avatar

As well as opcon over South Korean military, free bases (actually Korea pays $1bn annually to be occupied and gives valuable real estate for this for free), Korea also procures expensive items for the defence of other overseas US bases eg. in Guam and Okinawa.

SM3 interceptor missiles have no defence purpose for , yet $600m out of procurement budget goes to Raytheon (US) and Mitsubishi (who owe compensation to korean slave labour victims)

South korea launches it's first nano-satellite. An earth observation satellite which is to be part of a constellation of 10 satellites.

On it's own, it has a spatial resolution of around 3m. Similar to that of north koreas military recon satellite.

#ROK spy satellites have 30cm resolution, 10x (100x) better than these and plans to launch more.

Terrifying stuff? Not particularly? Remember that when the next north korean satellite is launched!

Only a couple of weeks ago, launched it's 2nd military spy satellite (both have been done with SpaceX launches).

Their commercial nanosat was launched from new zealand. South Korea has King Sejong Station in antarctica which they can use to communicate with it.
