Heads up to anyone using facebook or insta: you'll receive a notification about your data being used to train AIs. The opt out process is deliberately convoluted and you have to fill out a form to object. This is what I wrote in mine, and the objection was immediately registered as successful, so feel free to copy.

Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions about Meta or AI or whatever. So don't. I'm sharing helpful info for people who need it, not for you.

On the very slim off-chance this might be seen by someone who knows someone..

Anyone have any clue how to get in touch with a support team at Facebook? One of my colleagues had their personal account hacked & the intruder got from there to the business account for the company FB page & has downgraded everyone else's permissions so we can't get rid of them ourselves.

Boosts very welcome! We've spent all morning combing through help menus 😬

My favourite train journey of the year: heading down to my family with a backpack full of gifts and booze❤️

Here’s a story I wrote ages ago - Christmas at Waterloo station… https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/christmas-waterloo-station/

@girlonthenet thank you for reminding us about this story again. I love & adore it. And yay for you getting to keep your advance, but I'm very annoyed we don't have a whole book to read based on this 💗

Have a brilliant time away

What's the best writing advice you've heard or read?

More a reminder than advice, my @girlonthenet mug stops me falling too far into the doldrums of "Why am I bothering? Other people write so much better than me!"

The mug I'm drinking from right now, otoh, states "Another day, another dildo" which is a reminder that most of the time we just need to put one foot in front of the other even if it all feels rather samey...

And then I edited it!
And I posted it!

It are here: http://www.sandralindsey.wales/2023/08/the-perils-of-unfashionable-dress-kotw/
(A little short story about a pair of Regency gentlemen who are very good friends.)

& it's all thanks to @Mollysdailykiss & #KinkOfTheWeek which is currently "Necks" & so of course got me thinking of cravats &... well, go read the story!

OMG I've actually finally written a version of Peter & Lord Valery's story! They've been characters in my head since, umm... 2014? Maybe earlier?

Seriously, all writer friends should go check out the various & brilliant blogging memes, especially those run by @Mollysdailykiss

Now I just need to edit this story & post it during the right week for the next #Revelations prompt (since that's what got my words down on paper today)

What ancillary writing apps do you find the most useful?

Confession time: I had to go look up what "ancillary" means before I could answer this 😆

So... I mostly draft in Scrivener, edit in Word, use a web browser (as well as books!) for research, and there's a conversion app on my phone I use for checking I've got measurements right (I tend to talk/write in imperial but can visualise si units easier - typical topsy-turvy Brit here!)

I have been severely rebuked by RascalCat this evening, for crimes against all cat-kind.

Specifically, I called him through for dinner before putting food in his bowl, so when he arrived (much more promptly than usual!), his bowl was empty! The horror!

I am, of course, suitably chastened & will not do it again for at least 24 hours ;-)

Shameless self promotion. Tell us about yourself, your published work, or your WIP.

I write queer historical romance (mostly). I've had a few short stories published & my WW2-set novella Under Leaden Skies was published by Manifold Press in 2016, though has been out of print since they closed. One of my main projects is to re-work ULS into full-length novel by intertwining it with the story I drafted as a sequel in 2019.

I do get distracted by other shinies though!

How do you promote your writing?

I have a website, which I'm getting back in the habit of posting to (thank you to @Mollysdailykiss for #KinkOfTheWeek & all people creating memes that make me think!), I chatter on here, & I go to cons & talk to people irl.

I'm planning to set up a newsletter but I'm deliberately not rushing that because I want to be sure I can deliver whatever I decide to promise for it.

#WritersCoffeeClub day 1.
Intro: Shameless self-promotion. What's your WIP? What's it about?

Though I've tried working recently on longer works I could conceivably flog to a publisher, what I've actually been successful in writing recently is a series of mild-heat short stories inspired by #KinkOfTheWeek prompts.

Set in & around a fictional private gentlemen's club in Regency London, I'm enjoying writing something different. Stories completed so far are here: http://www.sandralindsey.wales/

Character development, world building, plot - how much attention do you pay to each?

Character, character, character! Formed by the world in which they live (which is based on both historical fact & a few expected genre tropes), the characters create the plot through their interactions.

When writing something like Regency Romance - especially as a fan of history & the genre - world building is mostly already there, soaked into the subconscious, rather than needing creation.

If you & your MC swapped places for a day, who would have an easier time adjusting?

Swapping places with a Regency not-quite-gentleman? I think we'd both be rather floundering. Though technological changes are the most obvious things we'd have to adapt to the presence or absence of, there's been a lot of social changes too which we'd both have to adjust to. Not to mention the whole city/rural difference & our vastly different jobs 😆

Going through some old notebooks prior to recycling them, I came across the following gem of an opening line:
"Toby blushed easily. It was the trait he most deplored in himself."

I have no idea what the rest of the story was supposed to have been, so if you fancy it please feel free to liberate poor Toby from wherever he's languishing, embarrassed by his blush...

Got a fawn on my lawn, Fedi. Not responsive. Breathing is sporadic but seems strong when it's here. Any advice?

(don't comment unless you know what to do. If you google this for me, you'll catch a block.)

Update: gonna leave it alone and see if its mum comes back at dusk.

Update update: yes, this is what the local wildlife rescue people say to do. Seems the mums stay away from the little ones a lot because the mums smell tasty and don't want their kids around the tastysmell. The fawn's superpower is not smelling like much. The mum deer just leave them in a place that seems safeish, which, like, fine, I guess I'll take as a compliment.

What's the most satisfying relationship (not necessarily romantic) you've ever written?

Two come to mind.

From my fanfic days: Sparrington. So much snark, so much hidden vulnerability, so much longing & deeply visceral connection they both fought against. And I learned a lot about writing through that community.

Original fic: Teddy & Sylvia from Under Leaden Skies, building a relationship on fragile foundations whilst living through a war. Surviving against the odds.

Who's gonna pull an all nighter on July 4th for ?

I live in a constituency that could potentially be the first to declare, being in Newcastle, where we go in for competitive election night counting, trying to beat the old enemy, Sunderland. Newcastle has won that race the last two elections, so Sunderland will be trying extra hard this time around. But there's always the new challenger, Blyth.

@beecycling I'm not but my husband is.

At our old house we had a sort-of tradition of repainting the hall, stairs & landing on general election nights 🤣
