@dekkzz76 I thought I'd like them, especially at my Haskell peak. I found them jarring, like la prétention of an exaggerated foreign accent on a loan word.

@dekkzz76 I did Scheme in college, and liked functions. I worked in Java for a decade, and liked types. Found Scala, which emphasizes both. Taught myself, published some open source, got discovered by a startup, and have been doing mostly Scala ever since. About 12 years now.

I think it’s reasonable and possible to create a new kind of open source license that disavows use in communities that allow bigotry. There’s nothing to say that licensing should be universal; developers have the moral right to enforce their values in their work.

@ben As a Scala veteran, I have vast experience with communities that tolerate bigotry. It's difficult, unrewarding, and most of all, unscalable, to license passive use. Digital copies are abundant, and some of them will be bad.

But my time is scarce, and I can guard that. Nobody is entitled to our support, our reviews, or our interop. I block aggressively and hope my work is a net positive.

In Extreme Programming, we picked a new pair programmer every day. I decided that was nonsense, and adopted Pete. We paired for the next nineteen years. He preferred the title "alpha" to "principal staff," but he shared his opinions whether you wanted them or not. He logged off this morning. Rest easy, friend.

P.S., this is what he thought of YAML.

A quick article on building your Scala vocabulary by understanding common affixes. "bi-" is intuitive, but what's "co-"? What are all those cryptic "-T", "-K", and underscore suffixes? Familiarity with these can help us find the function we're looking for, and name the ones we write so they can be found.
