Fascinating page of UI/UX patterns for including maps in apps/web pages/etc at https://www.mapuipatterns.com/

Found via @geomob newsletter (I recommend you subscribe, and not just because one of my projects was mentioned this month!)

Really chuffed that I'm starting to get some people donating to me via https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rtwilson as a thank you for geospatial things I've created like the FreeGISData site (https://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/), British Placename Mapper (https://placenames.rtwilson.com/) and my blog (https://blog.rtwilson.com/). It's a relatively small amount of money but it puts a big smile on my face :)

Good set of posts here on the differences between odc-stac and stackstac for merging multiple STAC items into xarray datasets: https://discourse.pangeo.io/t/comparing-odc-stac-load-and-stackstac-for-raster-composite-workflow/4097

Useful notebook showing old-fashioned (and slow!) ways of using GeoPandas, and the modern (faster!) ways of doing things: https://github.com/martinfleis/efficient-geopandas-workshop/blob/main/GeoPython2023.ipynb

My Free GIS Data website has now been updated, and all broken links have either been fixed or removed. Blog post about it at https://blog.rtwilson.com/free-gis-data-site-update-all-links-now-working/, and main site at https://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/

Cool looking new STAC CLI - see https://github.com/stac-utils/stac-rs/tree/main/stac-cli

Lets you create STAC items, search STAC APIs, validate STAC items etc.

GeoPandas has released an alpha of v1.0.0 - time to check it works with your code.

Details at https://martinfleischmann.net/geopandas-1.0-is-coming.-what-will-change/, changes include switching default loader from fiona to pyogrio (nice! I often forget to use pyogrio and it'll save me time), requiring Shapely 2.0, removing built-in datasets, and deprecating some stuff.

Does anyone I know work for a company that might want to sponsor Electromagnetic Field - a really cool tech & nerd festival held in a field in May. See https://www.emfcamp.org/sponsor for details, it would be much appreciated

Useful blog post about resampling rasters with - I didn't know it could (now) do summing of values when resampling: https://spatialthoughts.com/2024/04/02/aggregate-and-align-rasters-gdal/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=aggregate-and-align-rasters-gdal

I've created a new web app - British Placename Mapper at https://placenames.rtwilson.com/ - you can search for placenames in various ways (starts with 'great', ends with 'burgh' etc) and show them on an interactive map. Try a few of the examples and send me any cool maps you come up with!

(Re-posting for those who sensibly weren't using social media on a bank holiday weekend!)

Ever wondered about UK place names? My new web app lets you search place names (starting with 'south', ending with 'burgh', containing 'sea' etc) and plot them on a map - and then share those maps with friends.

Have a look at https://placenames.rtwilson.com/, or try one of the examples, like this map of different suffixes: https://placenames.rtwilson.com/#W3sidGV4dCI6ImJ1cmdoIiwiY29sb3IiOiIjZTMxYTFjIiwiY2hlY2tlZCI6dHJ1ZSwibWF0Y2hUeXBlIjoiZW5kc3dpdGgifSx7InRleHQiOiJoYW1wdG9uIiwiY29sb3IiOiIjMWY3OGI0IiwiY2hlY2tlZCI6dHJ1ZSwibWF0Y2hUeXBlIjoiZW5kc3dpdGgifSx7InRleHQiOiJiYWNoIiwiY29sb3IiOiIjMzNhMDJjIiwiY2hlY2tlZCI6dHJ1ZSwibWF0Y2hUeXBlIjoiZW5kc3dpdGgifV0=

🆕 blog! “The tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth”

You know that ice-breaker game "Two Truths And A Lie"? When I'm forced into some mandatory office fun, I always say... I've sat in the seat of a space shuttle. I still have two of my baby teeth. I used to be a voice-over artist. Well, one of those truths is about to come crashing […]

@Edent If the actual data is there too in DICOM files then there are plenty of FOSS tools that will read that. I 3D printed bits of my spine from a CT scan!

Welcome to NaNoWriMo, where I - and thousands of other plucky souls - try to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. You are reading "Tales of the Algorithm". A compendium of near-future sci-fi stories. Each chapter is a stand-alone adventure set a few days from now. Everything you read is possible - there's […]

Does anyone know what's going on with the QGIS 3.34 downloads for MacOS? I just tried to download it, clicked 'Download QGIS 3.34' button on the page, and got QGIS 3.32 instead.

Have the Mac installers not been updated yet? If so, I think the text on the download button may have been updated a bit prematurely.

Any ideas anyone?

@robintw@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@underdarkGIS Thats fine, thanks. In the meantime, would it be possible for the button text on the website to be updated to say 3.32 not 3.34? I suspect it might confuse a number of people. I didn't actually realise it wasn't 3.34 until I tried looking for some of the new features and couldn't find them!
