This is a bit of a long shot, but if there are any developers out there interested in mapping who would be willing to spend a bit of time helping a novice (me) out in some experiments to improve UX in web apps for sustainable transport planning, please get in touch.

@aeischeid OK great! Well I'm just getting going so any input appreciated. Good news, got a basic map up and running! https://cruse-bike.github.io/cruse/ However, got an issue that I cannot see how to resolve: the geocoding bar is in the wrong place. Any ideas? Have tried everything I can think of to fix it including in the <style> section.

@mattlehrer Hey Matt, more detailed answer now at my desk. We're working with MapLibre via svelte-maplibre. Current issue seems to be a bit of a fiddly one: search bar freezes after flying to place name as shown in video and described in this issue: https://github.com/cruse-bike/cruse/issues/8 Contributions welcome and happy to chat over.

I'm thinking about porting functionality in the {stats19} #rstats package into #Python and possibly other languages. Are you an #OpenSource developer with an interest in #DataScience for policy, sustainability + good? If so please check this issue and let us know your thoughts on taking this project to the next level 🚀 https://github.com/ropensci/stats19/issues/230
@rOpenSci @mszll + all any thoughts on best practices welcome also 🙏

@luis_de_sousa Thanks for the encouragement, although your comment does come across as a bit snide and dismissive. #rstats is a great language. #Python is a great language. As @martinfleis and others have said, this kind of comment isn't helpful. Constructive comments/suggestions v. welcome.

robinlovelace,
@robinlovelace@fosstodon.org avatar

@luis_de_sousa I get that you don't like R. It really is great if you want to get stuff done with data quickly. Just look at all the amazing things happening in the #rstats posts. I don't know why you would rubbish an entire language and #opensource community. Together we are stronger, collaboration between communities not competition requires mutual respect. Positivity can go a long way.

@luis_de_sousa read your comments. Thanks for info and links. Be aware that your comments to a post asking for help come across as negative. Read-up on how to be a good digital citizen: https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/communicationskills/being-a-good-digital-citizen/1/

The package {stats19}, which provides analysis-ready road traffic casualty data from the Department for Transport, has just hit 3.0.2. See https://docs.ropensci.org/stats19/ and install the latest version with

My first ever map for the #30DayMapChallenge: location data of 141k road traffic fatalities in Great Britain, 1979-2022. Spot the coordinate reference issues! Belated day 1: points. #geocompx

For anyone interested, the map is fully reproducible with open data and #OpenSource code. See here to give it a spin! https://github.com/Robinlovelace/30mapchallenge2023/blob/main/day1-points.md

How do we get the complement (don't know the correct term so I'm borrowing from set theory) of a shapefile within a bounding box in #rstats? I want the stuff outside the shapefile's boundaries but within its extent.

Would appreciate any help!

robinlovelace,

@terence within st polygon of the bonding box? Reproducible example will help get more precise and tested answers!

In the area of open tools for transport planning Transport for the North are going great guns. Their CAF.space #Python package provides a solid basis for spatial joins. Great to see modular and tested tools developed in the public sector. See more and get involved here: https://github.com/Transport-for-the-North
