@slink Ehh. There are some things I agree about that post (the branching into browsers and email, etc) but I like the service and will continue paying, at least for now. The justification from Vlad why they are doing that is pretty absurd in my opinion. It's "because what succesful search engine doesn't have a browser and an email service?". I don't agree with that and would prefer paying for a super-good search engine instead of multiple "ehh, they're fine" search/privacy tools.

Quickly tried Mojeek and the search results were trash. Maybe try the maintained for of SearX, SearXNG?

Allows you to select what search engines you use to get your results.

Can't figure out how to add mastodon-web.service logging to the Better Stack via Fluentd... Fluentd is completely new thing for me.

I mean this: sudo journalctl -u mastodon-web.service --all -f

I want to add that debug log to log tail. But even though everything is configured, up and running, logtail shows nothing. Nada.

Let's wait for the support to reply for a third time.

@Mehrad Yeah, fingerprints from an image board post used to confirm the owner was Aleksanteri Kivimäki (suspected Vastaamo hacker). Cool tech! But for a normal person someone having your fingerprints is probably less bad than having their mailing address, worst case swatting in the USA, etc.

I see rising amount of spam accounts on inactive servers. People should continue using and upkeeping their servers, otherwise they end up being hives for spammers. This is like a textbook case of how not to set up servers. You should not set up and forget. It's constant work.

@mixaill @rolle I'd like not to dunk IPv6, but so far I've only seen it used mostly for spam and abuse purposes due to not many consumer ISPs supporting it and just the shear amount of IP addresses one spammer can get their hand on. 😦

I personally have access to over 37 QUINTILLION IPv6 addresses in my 2 IPv6 residential subnets (/64) on Hetzner. Fyi quintillion is with 18 zeroes.

What forum software is there nowdays? Don't need much, just like categories, posts and replies. And a modern look, phpBB mostly a no-go. NodeBB looks decent but it's admin experience is awful. Discourse seems promising but it's categories seem more like tags and not categories (at least on the marketing photos) :thinking_hard:

I had a Twitter list "standard stuff" where I listed the core accounts I definitely wanted to hear about. This fav list grew over the years and had 120 users in total. These were active users that in the golden era posted every day. These were the ones I wanted to read whenever possible.

I wanted to see what's the status today so I went through every account and here's the result. By "inactive" I mean users who haven't posted anything in two months or more.

  • 20% have completely deleted their account (the list now has 95 users)
  • 36% still post frequently
  • 64% are inactive or quit using Twitter
  • 30% are inactive without any reason given
  • 23% of those who still post on X also have active Mastodon, Bluesky or Threads accounts
  • 1% quit and moved to Bluesky
  • 1% quit and moved to Mastodon
  • 1% is active on Threads

Just set up a log watcher via Datadog for my Mastodon server cluster, because it's the most pretty and easiest for me in this situation. Works amazing and now I will receive a notification from even a tiniest anomaly!
