Rather than banning phones for kids in school, why doesn't school include lessons in how to use a mobile phone... Stuff like "hold it to your ear, rather than in front of you like a very small empty drinks tray. And don't use the speaker functionality on public... etc...

Walking back from Voting earlier I noticed this interesting contraption on the pavement.

The first thing I saw was the solar panel, so I initially wondered if it was an ebike charging station. I crossed the road to have a closer look.

It's not a charging station. I couldn't see any power outlets. So what is it?

It's another attempt by some designer to "innovate" in the bike parking space.

The intention is kinda sound. Dense bike storage in min space. What's not to like? Thread time

Why is it so damn hard to find an M4 tap that can tap all the way to the bottom of a blind hole? :(

Next week I leave my housemate in charge of my triffid collection, and head out for a couple of weeks of interrailing. I've planned the first half of the trip, crossing 7 borders with over a dozen trains in the first week.

But now I need to make the hardest decision of the trip planning.

Which books shall I take with me ?

This phot outlines beautiful. If heartbreakingly, the law of unintended consequences.

Last summer the Dutch government introduced deposit returns for small plastic bottles and cans. A 500ml pet bottle is €0.15, and a can is €0.10. They used the justification of reducing litter this policy.

Reducing litter.

It hasn't worked. In fact it's made the problem worse. This isn't the fault of the idea of a deposit return system on small drinks containers. But in the implementation. Thread time. 1/n

Having a chat with some Dutch friends. One of them is talking about horses.

"Paarden?" I ask.

So my belief that Dutch people will dunk anything in mayo is not wholly true. My friend just objected to me dropping their usb cable in the mayo...

India measuring temperatures over 52°C. We had 43°C a couple of years ago and it was unbearable. The idea of 10° more doesn't bear thinking about.

Temps are going up, and with water scarcity increasing out ability to deal with it is gonna diminish even more. Millions are gonna die.

Computer nerds of the fediverse. Work are looking for some video conference devices for meeting rooms. The sort that you put in the middle of the room, or under the TV, and it allows remote people to see and hear the meeting. Does anyone have recommendations for suitable devices. No AI shit, and no cloud dependency are key requirements.

Please boost for reach.

Reminded by a survey from @sinituulia. I need a new backpack. Mostly for running errands around town, going to the supermarket etc... needs to be durable, with an external mesh side pocket for a water bottle. Big enough to also fit a laptop would be good.

What do people recommend?

I thought this flag came from all the glass on the fietspad. But nope. It's a thorn. Not the biggest I've ever removed, but certainly one of the more annoying.

We've all been having a good laugh about sparkling autocarrot suggesting that people include glue in the cheese on pizza, and that we should all eat rocks.

But at the same time, you can buy mushroom identification books in Amazon that are "written" using sparkling autocarrot.

Actual printed books. On how to tell very similar poisonous and non poisonous mushrooms apart. Something that is really hard for skilled humans in some cases.

Rail geeks, what's happening with the ICE L stock replacing the steam train between Amsterdam and Berlin? Have they been spotted doing testing and validation runs?

There's a lot of discussion among coders about comments, some say that good code shouldn't need commenting.

But the thing a lot of people fail to understand with comments is that you don't just want to say what th code is doing. But why. The why is often more important. I have a code base I've taken over maintenance of, and in the execution there's a 60 second delay in there. But there's no details of why. What breaks if I remove it? Do I want to find out the hardway?
