"The Destruction, Starvation and Death in Gaza Are Israel's Defeat." This is what you call a searing indictment, by Amira Hass in Haaretz https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/2024-06-04/ty-article/.premium/the-destruction-starvation-and-death-in-gaza-are-israels-defeat/0000018f-e31a-dce5-abdf-e33f1d9a0000

Look at the list of amazing, brilliant sociologists who have served in the leadership of this organization. Now name one important thing that has changed in the last 10 years.

@Alon sociology has one prominent nonprofit OA journal, Sociological Science. ASA has one OA journal that Sage created to divert energy from systemic reform. Otherwise not much. ASA dominates, and it is a for-profit paywall operation.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon ya sociology journals aren't that expensive for libraries, but it's enough profit to completely corrupt the organization. Long story!

I feel seen by @philipncohen's post on American girls' names coming from surnames over time: https://familyinequality.wordpress.com/2024/05/25/giving-girls-surnames-as-first-names-has-peaked-for-now/

Among the 12 names in this chart, four are used for four of the characters in A Second Chance for Wings (the fifth character is C.J.), because we wanted gender-neutral names and went with very modern ones.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon @acb Good a theory as any. "many examples of names switching from one gender to another, such as Leslie or Ashley, were part of a larger shift in tastes which made the long-e suffix more desirable for girls’ names." https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304422X20302448

I am pretty sure people started using initials for sexualities -- eg, LGB, eventually LGBTQIA+ -- in the 80s because of conventions in print personal ads. I don't know what year this example is from was but this is how they went. They were everywhere. Maybe can never prove this but it's true.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

The terms appeared in the 1990s, when the ads were big

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon tx. I'm just thinking about the practice of stacking up initials in any order. That was an innovation of the early 90s

Today I realized "resilience" in psychology is inequality in sociology. Something is a "risk factor" if it has an average negative effect. If everyone overcame the risk equally there would be no negative effect and thus no resilience. Resilience means some people overcome it and others don't.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I read an ed psych paper that defined resilience as when an individual with a risk factor - defined as something that produces a bad outcome on average - does better than the average for the affected group. Just mathematically that seems like a measure of inequality. (I know psychologists know and care about inequality - and the inequitable distribution of risk factors, and thus need for resilience, etc)

It's the very rare writer whose unedited work I will pay to read. That's a blog, and it's free for a reason. If you want me to pay, polish it up and get it past an editor like a professional. And don't tell me you need the support - real publications and their workers need my support.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

don't have much patience for, "this industry is in trouble so let's fire all the unknown people behind the scenes and pretend we still have a decent product." I'll subscribe to your substack if you name your paid editor.

I sell textbooks, and when you buy one I get somewhat less than 15% of the sticker price. That's my incentive to get it done. The rest is for the professionals at the employee-owned publisher who make it worth reading and teaching.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon yea there is such a movement and it mostly produces, no offense, inferior products because it actually takes money to make good textbooks. My book is $44, I never heard of a $4722 book.

philipncohen,
@philipncohen@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon Tricky issue. Yes, gouging, but compared to the attention it gets textbooks are a small part of the cost of college except at the cheapest schools. Many students are happy to pay less for short term licenses.

@Alon honestly I do not know, but I would guess there are more intellectuals who have a vague sense that he is kind of anti-Islam than there are people who have read his books.
