Feminists taught me that Mad Max Fury Road is not a feminist movie. I get that.

Fury Road was just an action movie where the violent protagonist was a woman with a visible disability, instead of an able bodied man. I get that.

But I still enjoy the fact that George Miller looked at all the dudes that got angry that a woman was the star of a Mad Max movie, and said "Cry about it!" and doubled down.

I am so watching this.

@mekkaokereke I'm not qualified to determine whether or not FURY ROAD was feminist, but it's worth noting that Miller hired Vagina Monologues' creator Eve Ensler to ground the Wives' experience and help the actors find their way to and through the characters. https://lithub.com/how-eve-ensler-shaped-the-five-wives-of-mad-max-fury-road/

Hey @skinnylatte, wondering if you've caught this local YouTuber, whose latest video explores some Asian fusion places throughout the East Bay. https://youtu.be/8nKQibEOUfQ?si=l890DpEZR4xVcHM3

The best tips people gave me about visiting LA:

  • if you have to fly, fly into and out of Burbank. It’s worth whatever extra $ even with fewer flights, simply to NOT go through LAX

  • don’t plan a to criss-cross LA too much. It’s just so vast. Every time I go I do part of my trip on the west side, and the other part on the east. That way it makes it easy to get to places I want to go

  • Monterey Park has a huge density of many types of Chinese food! Tacos in East LA!

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte Growing up in Santa Monica, and with family still on the west side, it's been disheartening to realize that, while beautiful, it may be the least interesting area of Los Angeles.

It's funny how strip malls no longer have the negative associations they once did, because they're such a significant portion of LA architecture. Of course the best food is in strip malls—L.A. is, like, one-third strip malls.

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte oh ffs.
Santa Monica was early on the 'dog park' revolution. I grew up going to Joslyn Park (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ryFBgdYWxtGiATrv7).

It's funny how much Ocean Park has changed since the 70s/80s. It was a funky Bohemian rundown beach community. Again, beautiful, but just so... sterile.

@scottjenson It's easy enough to switch to "following." I'm finding Threads to be my second place after Mastodon. Bluesky has largely faded away for me.

Hot and correct take from LA foodie friend: ‘when I say we aren’t a burrito town like SF, I mean to say we have MANY, many types of burrito, not just one; not that our burritos aren’t good’

I’m really passionate about tacos. I feel like I don’t taco bout it enough. I’m going to LA soon, which is also when I have tacos six times a day. I love how different every taco tastes. Every single kind of them. (Watch The Taco Chronicles on Netflix)

When immigration stuff is sorted out for me, I’m going to go to Mexico on the regular to eat tacos.

Enshittification comes for us all, even Descript which I already pay $20/mo for because it's the best podcast editing platform on earth. Last year they added a Robot AI feature that could take your voice and create new audio from your own scripts to let you insert missing words. I went to test it out again today but got this message on a single sentence.

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@mathowie is this enshittification, though? Is it not appropriate to charge more for more capability?

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@mathowie While perhaps a crappy customer experience, that's not technically enshittification. Enshittification is what happens in where the enabler of a marketplace creates something useful, sacrifices the 'consumer' side in favor of the business side, and then, when they have garnered sufficient power/monopoly, makes things crappy for everyone, because what choice do you have.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification
Not every rapacious digital practice is necessarily enshittification.
I'm being pedantic, but I think it's important that @pluralistic's concept is about a specific pattern that has been repeated in a bunch of places.

Also, for what it's worth, Descript's move doesn't bug me. That AI capability is a compelling addition, but not necessary for the core use. We use Descript for our podcast, and I'm happy I have a tier that doesn't include AI, as we don't need it.

@skinnylatte Berkeley Bowl regularly has a selection of Asian Lay's. We've been enjoying Suckling Pig and Numbing Spicy Hot Pot. There's also a selection of smaller bag higher-end flavors like Kobe beef, but they've underwhelmed me. Some internet searching is revealing a cornucopia of options that I have never seen but want to try, top among them Mexican Tomato.

I should never watch screen adaptations of books I love. Dune is probably the exception to that. But finished 3 Body Problem yesterday and haven’t felt that disappointed since Ender’s Game.

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@markboulton @apolaine Huh. My reaction was different, possibly since I read the books so long ago that I only have impressions of what happened. I thought the show was very strong through Episode 5 (except for Auggie; what a terrible character); and then fell apart for the last 3 episodes when it became maudlin, characters who'd been backgrounded (Will and Saul) all of a sudden take center stage, and Jin starts behaving like the opposite of a scientist in order to have 'drama.'

🤔 All this talk of could Caitlin Clark play in the NBA (no) or the BIG3 (maybe), but no talk of could Dawn Staley coach in the NBA (yes), or the BIG3 (yes). 🤷🏿‍♂️

peterme,
@peterme@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke That:

  • she had to remake much of her roster
  • which meant much of her team were frosh and soph
  • her strength-in-number ethos gives her players such confidence that they played 9-deep throughout the tournament
  • and she went undefeated
    shows she has deep emotional and tactical intelligence, and would likely walk on as a top-third coach in the NBA.

peterme,

@kraigschmidt @mathowie that’s not what I’m seeing. SC plays a true team game, next player up, 9-person rotation. Iowa relies so much on Clark that when she’s stopped, so are they.

There are countless movies featuring an American abroad, stranger in a strange land, unfamiliar with local customs, geography, etc.

I would love quality examples of movies/TV about non-Americans in America, not as tourists, and as told by folks from that culture (so no "Moscow on the Hudson.") I'm curious as to what gets captured as strange/other from anothers' perspective.
