I'm working on a video and blog post about who isn't online!

I think I have the digital exclusion side pretty covered but am still curious:

Have you ever decided to curb or stop your internet usage?

Have you bought devices or software to change how or how much you use the internet?

Do you know anyone who doesn't use the internet at all, or who uses it very sparingly?

Would appreciate boosts and thoughtful responses :)

oluOnline,

@mattwilcox I'm trying to decide if curation gets a mention or a section in all this, I know that's one of the main ways people stop the flow of awful.

Do you use dating apps? Have they changed how you date?

Writing maybe a video, maybe a blog post, maybe something else, on love in the time of algorithms!

it's my birthday so here is a playlist as long in tracks as I am in years, as is my custom (for seven years anyway lol)

edit: wrong link!

navigating social media policy at work so been quiet - having a webinar soon lol - but whether by DM or reply would love to hear experiences with social media policy at work. have any of you reduced our radically changed your posting as a result of a policy?

also would love positive or neutral experiences I just assume they're further between 😣

oluOnline,

@airwhale @chris i guess i mean "during your own time"!

wow i just heard about @owncast! I'm assuming twitch is everyone's go to because of discovery, but would be cool to not be on an Amazon service for streams! #owncast

Does anyone know how far Shadow DOM accessibility has come on for Web Components?

Been reading a bunch of posts by @nolan and others, basically checking if there's a place to check feature development that is succinct, or is it a matter of following along on GitHub?

RE: last boost of the great post by @h

the best things in my life were delivered to me by the internet. I've met chosen family members via chance in a Facebook group I joined by random encounter on Twitter.

I work in tech due to Facebook ads for a free coding bootcamp.

I've made friends and lovers and found out people I thought close to me weren't at all through a screen.

some people pray and I just... search online.

oluOnline,

this isn't to say I think everyone online is always good, quality, or true, hopefully obviously, but I really believe in the transformative power of technology in its broadest sense.

I am still trying to work out the edges of this belief, but on some level I think if it's not online then it's down to me. I need to say the right incantation or the search in the right corners, not that the information or solution literally doesn't exist.

oluOnline,

depending on my mood I joke and or say seriously that I'm a technopagan. I don't just mean that in the bits and bytes sense, fire is a technology, etc

it makes sense to me that it should be revered, occasionally & fairly feared, as well being a source of joy and turmoil, like all the stuff of life.

it annoys me that Big Tech and tbh most of the industry act as if there is one way to do tech, as if they know the One True Path ("software evangelism" is too easy pickings to talk about lol).

Y2K/millennium bug: memories and lessons wanted please!

last boost is actually the first time I've seen that stuff was done on the hardware level about Y2K!!

so if you worked on it, know a lot about it, were old enough to be incredibly worried or knowingly nonchalant, or simply have opinions on what we learned (or didn't!) from it I'd love to hear!

Might end up as a video; my video skills are rusty AND embryonic but feels like a fun project :)

Does anyone have favourite resources for learning about web components?

oluOnline,

does anyone know why the Shadow DOM is called that?

oluOnline,

by "that" I mean shadow lol, I'm confused what shadows have to do with encapsulation

writers of non-fiction: how do you sustain a writing practice that produces things other people see if you struggle with the cadence?

been doing a weekly challenge and I think it was good for kickstarting me, but I'm not sure if it's a good rhythm for me. I feel like I'm saying boring things often. not sure biweekly/monthly would help.

On the other hand, I feel like it's good to get input from others, + see that your ideas land/are relevant.

anyone have any tips for balancing things?

oluOnline,

@janl 🤔 maybe I need to be more strict about writing in my writing time rather than research or reading, I do try and do a bit most days

oluOnline,

@janl a lot of the advice I've read says that you should count research focused writing as writing but I get what you mean!

Does anyone know how the internet archive works, in terms of things like:

  • are they hoping the archive will last the next 100 hundred years? the next 1,000? if so, what are they doing to ensure this?
  • what is it hosted on? I did a double take at Amazon being involved with the beginnings (according to Wikpedia) but understandable I guess

still googling so might answer my own questions but thought some of youse might have cool answers.

oluOnline,

I've always got the vague/not so vague (people telling me they "visited some of their servers") impression it's all privately managed servers somewhere, but in that case do they have stewardship rules and stuff?

@internetarchive i forgot youse might even be on here to ask!

oluOnline, to random

In case there are any obvious conclusions I'm missing:

What do people think the biggest lessons from the history of the web are? What do you hope "comes back", what are you hoping stays dead, and what do you hope is to come?

I'd appreciate RTs (and long detailed replies lol)!

oluOnline,

@jonny I think I don't have enough background info to ask any interesting questions about the archaeological side, though that's fascinating and if you know of any resources about like "when were the first deep sea cables laid" or "how did they get permission to lay the first cross country internet cables" I'd be super grateful! same on ARPANET and I've never even heard of nsfnet lol.

oluOnline, to random

I find mastodon threads kind of disorientating, so bear with as i get back to all the amazing replies lol!

oluOnline,

@jkohlmann thanks so much, that's much better already

oluOnline,

@Wraithe I'm on Android! enjoying elk in Firefox though!
