I make chunks of the internet, and I like some stuff. Rest assured I'm not famous in any meaningful way.

tl;dr, the developer of Bartender quietly sold the app to parties unknown about 2 months ago. v5.0.52 should, theoretically, still be fine, but consider turning off auto-updates.

The longer I spend on Mastodon, the more I realize that I just completely don’t understand some other peoples model of consent. I don’t entirely understand why “this is a great post" would be something that you wouldn’t necessarily choose to share because you didn’t want to single out a great post.

This right here. I’d love to move off cloudflare, but until there’s something that actually replaces their service, it’s untenable.

Yes, I know about Tailscale and ngrok. No, they aren’t a replacement. https://wetdry.world/@lexd0g/112557872631430477

@phildini I'm curious, in what ways do they fall short?

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@webology @phildini @jacob Funny you should mention that, I'm doing something a lot like that, although on Azure instead; I've thought about doing it with fly.io -- which is why that was my original response! -- but since I get a bunch of Azure credits for free, haven't closed out on it.

A UI failure that I hit all the time with macOS apps is that ⌘-w almost always closes a window, but the keystroke to re-open the main window is different in many applications, and sometimes doesn't exist. The option is often differently named in the menus, too, and in a different menu.

I have a possibly obvious-to-experts #Django question: is there a supported way for a Django “app" to depend on other apps, and implicitly "install" them?

Trying out #Alfred-sans-PowerPack, so far so good. (Been a decade since I last used it ~= "new user”…)

Once I added documents to its default search (no I don't want to do the ' thing) it can find my microwave manual PDF!

When I tell it I want to open "Documents", it opens ~/Documents, not some empty, unused "Documents" folder buried in a random app-related location! Wow!

Spotlight devs: see? was that so hard? Alfred's even using /your/ fucking metadata index to do this!

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@hynek @bitprophet ... what is the ' thing?

There is no lie so persistent, so pernicious, so inescapable as the “remember me" checkbox on airline websites.

Fed up with ' . No fuzzyfinder, in 2024; no real drilldown; the way it organizes/sorts results are unintuitive. I shouldn't have to remember what /format/ a document is to go "oh right I oughtta scroll down a bunch to see PDFs” 😩

What's good for alternative launcher/finder tools these days? AFAIK, it's still down to the same candidates from ~10ya, ie , , ? (EDIT: Raycast enters the chat! Tho its AI focus is worrying.)

See poll!

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@mpirnat @hynek @bitprophet I tried it for a month or so -- Hubbers seem to really like it -- and bounced off; it's not for me. It just fit me wrong and never settled into a comfortable pattern of usage.

If for no other reason*, I support a mask requirement at #PyConUS because the kind of person who doesn’t attend because they’re required to mask is the kind of person who I don’t want to hang out with anyway.

(* and there are lots of other good reasons too)

Left from #PyConUS about 33 hrs ago. Had a scratchy throat this morning w/ a negative test and just now have a positive test.

I went out with various groups, unmasked, throughout the weekend. This was a risk I was willing to take. Still, I'm glad I was wearing a mask in the convention center around folks who did not choose to take that same risk.

I'm gonna go rest now.

@Ooze You're making things worse in pursuit of the endorphin rush of a superiority high. Get off your high horse and don't encourage people to hide their positive tests.

Is it me or is the #Django documentation for project templates uncharacteristically bad?

Like, I have so many questions about how this templating works. Do I get to template filenames? How? Can I include the template as a subdirectory in a repository, or do I need to have it hosted in its own? How about providing one as part of a wheel?

I would love to build a project template into NomNom, so that later worldcons can just “django-admin startapp --template nomnom:basic_template" or something.

@ghickman I'm just relieved that I'm not missing something obvious. I'll see if I have a chance to put something in.

Finally done with precautionary post- isolation. Tested negative✌🏻

offby1,

@bitprophet I'm glad to see it!

I've been home-masking and sleeping in a separate room here, too, so I feel ya. Of course, I actually have a cold, too, which sucks ass, but at least it sucks less ass.

It's the last day of #PyConUS for me, spent in semi-isolatiion because of a scratchy throat and a COVID exposure.

I've tested non-positive two consecutive days though, so I have hope it's not the bad one. Still, not the way I want to end a PyCon.

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

Three consecutive non-positive tests. I’ve got sniffles and a cough, but signs are pointing to “not COVID, just conventional con crud”

I'll be testing once more today.

Day 4, negative twice (because I realized that the first one had expired a couple of months ago)

Double negative.

Despite my worries, I think I'm COVID-negative.

I have a #PyConUS / #Seattle “missed contact" question; I spoke to a Tammy who was at #PyCascades and PyCon US, and we talked about GitHub's contribution graph; if anyone knows who that is, can you put her in touch? Thanks!

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@phildini @webology @ehmatthes I only really ran into problems using it when I passed millions upon millions of files. I don’t think that that’s a problem I’m going to have anywhere except back when I worked for AWS, and had over 300 projects checked out all the time.

Are there any #PyConUS sprint stragglers up for an outdoor-seating dinner? Allergies + talking have left me a sore throat, so I avoided the CC today, but I've tested and am not a plaguebearer, so I'd love to have a drink and a bite with some nerds.
