It's #WorldLionDay: The cauldron of the early Cetlic Hochdorf “princely” burial was decorated with 3 bronze #lions on the rim.

On display at Landesmuseum Württemberg.

ninawillburger,
@ninawillburger@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@NatureMC Thr cauldron was assembled from individual parts of different origins, e.g. two of the lions were made in a workshop in Italy, the third one was made by a Celtic craftsman.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: a #Roman bracelet made of turquoise and dark blue glass beads. They are imitating beads made of the lapis lazuli and turquoise, semi-precious stones mined in Afghanistan and Egypt.
Found in a burial in Augusta Raurica, Switzerland, 4th c. AD

From the pile dwelling settlement at Wangen-Hinterhorn, Lake Constance, dating 3800-3500 BC.

New analysis reveals: an arrowhead found in the 19th Century in the late Bronze Age (900–800 BCE) lake dwelling of Mörigen, Switzerland, was made of meteoritic iron. The Kaalijarv #meteorite, Estonia, is proposed as a possible source of the iron.

An absolutely fantastic #Roman barge, "De Meern 1", lenght 25m. It was wrecked in a winding tributary of the Rhine around the year 190 AD, possibly due to navigational error. Much of the barge's interior and the captain's personal belongings were preserved in the cabin, including a collection of tools. It allows an extraordinary glimpse into life aboard a vessel.

A #Neolithic conch shell horn (charonia nodifera) found in Ösel, Lower Saxony, dating 5300-4900 BC - the oldest known musical instrument in this region. It's an evidence for early contacts with the Mediterranean.
The shell was found filled with flint tools in a settlement pit.

Since 2018, the original bright colours have been uncovered.

bird-shaped vessels were used as perfume bottles. The liquid was sealed inside and the tip of the tail had to be broken to remove the perfume. This one is still intact and filled with the scented content!

A stunning #torc from the Erstfeld Treasure, showing animals that merge into each other to form fanciful creatures. The treasure was deposited in a rock crevice in a valley leading to the Gotthard Pass, probably as votive offerings of a group of travellers. It consists of four golden #torcs and three golden arm rings. Found in Erstfeld, Switzerland, dating around 390 BC. On display at Landesmuseum Zurich.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: the magnificent #Roman Trivulzio cage cup, bearing a toast that reads: BIBE VIVAS MVLTIS ANNIS - Drink! May you live for many years!
Dating 4th c. AD.
We don't know how cage cups (so-called Diatreta) were produced.
There are several theories. The most common one argues they have been cut from a thick-walled blown blank. But it was also argued that they have been cut from a pressed double-shelled blank.
