I was recently asked to help an organization answer the question: should we align our software architecture with business capabilities defined by our enterprise architects?

After learning more about their context and exploring several examples, my recommendation was not to align the software architecture and business capabilities...

Because the business capabilities were not produced with the intention of creating loosely coupled software architecture and teams.

The EAs were mapping out business capabilities which they could use for strategic planning and macro-organization design (e.g. Team of Teams and higher). Not with the goal of loosely coupled software.

Based on my 15 years of experience, defining a loosely coupled software architecture cannot be achieved in a purely top-down manner by people that are not involved in building the software. The details matter.

It's full of essential advice for developers and architects, covering architecture diagrams, technical writing, compelling narratives, and more.

It's clear a lot of hard work has gone into the book because the concepts are explained so well.

Jacqui has done an amazing job. I would confidently recommend this book to all developers and architects.

It may be 4 months away, but designing a good workshop experience takes a lot of effort, so @indu and myself are already hard at work designing our new workshop.

There's a lot still to be done, but so far I'm quite happy with the direction it's going in.

Our in-person workshop in Amsterdam last year was a good experience, and I believe that this one in Denver can be even better.
