Our AirBnB’s host speaks a bit of Welsh, her grown children are bilingual. I’ve got zoom students from round here. 10% is not “nobody”.

Typos happen, of course they do: there’s one in the alt text of the image here. But when typos happen in contexts like this, somebody notices, usually, before the sign gets made, or at least before it gets set in concrete where everyone can see it. Unless the typo is is the Welsh text, because nobody bothered to ask a Welsh speaker to check it.

When I worked in Oriel, the Welsh Arts Council’s bookshop in that Cardiff, we were taken over by HMSO, and part of that jolly process was a re-fit of the shop, including all the signage.

It took them three attempts to get “PENSAERNÏAETH” (architecture) right: first time through a simple typo somewhere between Cardiff and whereever the signs were made, and secondly because they still missed the diaeresis on the <ï>.

The HMSO crew were usually sensitive when dealing with stuff like this, but my memory of seeing the second version of the sign being unwrapped is of a fairly obvious “o ffor ffycs sêc” from one of the Cardiff staff, and a much quieter “what, really? Two dots?” from someone from London. (@marijeangordon might remember this)

But we all knew, even me, who was being FORCED to learn Welsh at the time, that if we put up a sign with a typo in it, our customers would notice immediately.

So when I see something like this parking sign, or some nonsense in a supermarket, or whatever the fuck, it just reminds me that most Welsh speakers either don’t have the confidence, or the power, to complain about this shit.

10% of the people who walk past that sign every day know that it’s stupid and wrong, but it’s still there. Best not make a fuss. It’s #OnlyWelsh

Blocking other instances because they won’t block X or Y is childish

Please worry about the blocks on your own instance and don’t force them onto others. That’s why they chose to run their server and not join yours😘

As user you can block individual people and even complete domains(instances). Instance admins/mods can do the same on instance level. That should be enough to moderate content you’ll see

But for the love of cats, stop with dictating terms to other instances..

@stux Blocking other instances for whatever reason you want to block them is the very core of federation. You blocked a server the other day in a fit of pique. It’s not the kind of behaviour I’d want from a mod on my server, but you’re not a mod on my server.
