Continued attack on the public domain by the Italian court system, ruling that the Florence gallery that owns Michelangelo's David also owns "image rights" to the statue, can require licensing fees for any image depicting it, and can impose additional fines for presenting it in a distorted way: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/florence-gallerie-dellaccademia-wins-david-lawsuit-2313262, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40023471

It is perhaps important to note that the statue, created in 1504, was on outdoor exhibit in a public square in Florence until 1873, and a replica is still visible there.

Is it a new scoop about @SwiftOnSecurity ?

Or a long-known fact in the @wikipedia community? (I occasionally enjoy reading that account, but I am not an expert on its history. And despite rumors to the contrary, I know quite little about particular Wikipedia editors.)

Or a made-up thing to conceal the owner's identity?

Or just goofing around?

(Also, I wonder whether "tooling" means @mediawiki or templates, bots, and gadgets.)

nemobis,

@aharoni Given the edit count mention, bots and gadgets may be more plausible.

My guesses are no better than yours. The story, true or made up, was chosen because it's realistic. https://filippo.io got started by coding Wikipedia bots, as many others. :)

It's amazing how you handled all that material on your own for years. Even more so that you follow up almost 10 years later. Nobody else does what you do.

What an adventure it was to mail 78 kg of Italian computer magazines from Milan to NY, back in December 2012. I think my over-optimistic packing and the rain took them well before VCF entered the picture though. x_x

I wrote this column in a local paper for my job in comms & the higher-ups got mad about it.

See if you can figure out why.

In a kafkaesque experience, when the executive director & issue leader called me in, I asked them what about the article was a problem & they sat there for minutes looking at this short article trying to figure out what had upset them.

I'm quitting.

I work at Cooperative Extension Tompkins County, a dysfunctional piece of shit.

Another interesting idea... what is the coverage of the vanished journal 'Heterocycles' in Sci-Hub?

Apparently only 36.7% according to the Sci-Hub Stats Browser: https://greenelab.github.io/scihub/#/journal/25864

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@mike @rmounce A third of the authors of this journal were from Japan. Maybe they didn't have many subscriptions outside Japan, and Sci-Hub never got enough password donations from Japan?

Marginal effect here, but Sci-Hub typically refused to download OA PDFs. In a best case scenario, this 37 % would be summed to IA's 7 % "bright archive" https://fatcat.wiki/container/qzgbkg535nfnxdf6axotjixoim . Still that would be barely more than 40 %.

With a list of subscribers, people could at least try ILL. Hmm.

Are paywalled, subscription access journals financially sustainable?

(A question no-one seems to ask enough...)

I've just seen that a paywalled, subscription access chemistry journal called 'Heterocycles' has gone kaput.

https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/a-key-chemistry-journal-disappeared-from-the-web-others-are-at-risk/4019265.article

All those folx asking questions about open access journals might want to ask the same questions about paywalled, subscription journals too - that's all I'm saying!

@rmounce Not a small journal! I wonder if CLOCKSS really meant they have all copies of all issues since 1973.

Re financial sustainability, how dare you question the choices of a for-profit business? That's the invisible hand's job! Visible hands should only focus on questioning everyone else.

In all my years working in EU politics in various policy areas, I have always had this nagging sort of fear, Yes Minister style, that the officials and the lobbyists are sharper and better informed than the politicians they're working with

Yet the main railway lobby in Brussels - Community of European Railways (CER) - is an awful association. Incapable of putting together anything coherent and sensible. But no-one else, with any scale, is either. It's really grim

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

Spotify officially demonetises all tracks with under 1,000 streams

This is just an insanely bone-headed move that is so pointless.

These artists don't even get paid that much money, and yet Spotify wants to cut off their revenue.

I'm done with Spotify. In fact, I think I'm flat-out done with music streaming services. All of them are exploitative. back to buying digital albums for me.

@dt Thanks. Unfortunately, 1000 times a Spotify stream would be less than 10 % of the price of an album. So what percentage goes to you? Do you publish directly or did you give some rights to collecting societies, labels, publishers and whatnot? Do you own all of the rights (music, lyrics, performance, record)?

@De_Treias Each donation to a separate recipient creates a separate charge. To reduce fees, you can decide to make an annual donation for x years (paid in advance). Otherwise renewal is manual unless set to automatic.

Liberapay can't hold money for you, so you can't charge a wallet and then draw from it. Every payment goes straight from you to the recipient.

It's still better than Patreon where your credit card will be inundated with transactions every month.
