neekerbreeker,

@wonderofscience Nice! Thanks for the share.

It reminds me of this interactive #earth time travel site. Plug in the name of a city, then go back in various increments all the way to 750 million years ago, and see where the city was.

Book Bans in Spread as New State Law Takes Effect

As Texas enters its third straight school year of coordinated banning activity, a growing number of districts are targeting books.

Caught in the dragnet: featuring a “naked” crayon and one with a cartoon butt.

neekerbreeker,

@ProPublica I've been staring at this story and wondering how any remotely reasonable person can even momentarily equate a crayon without its paper wrapper with nudity that might harm children.

(Kudos to that author for a damn cute story idea! 🖍️)

Not on the same planet? These people aren't even in the same universe. (Their celestial bodies - oh noes, a dirty word! - are all clothed.)

    @The_Icarian @SrRochardBunson There are also patent issues.

    In 2012 the FDA approved Korlym, a generic mifepristone tablet, to treat Cushing's disease. Korlym could be prescribed off-label for abortions.

    At least one other generic has been submitted to FDA (by Teva) but the Korlym manufacturer obtained additional method-of-use patents, so Teva is held up with patent infringement litigation.

    stancarey, to writing

    A lot of writing, especially academic writing, is mired in abstraction that can be avoided by finding the real verb. For example:

    Discussion of X took place → X was discussed
    We carried out measurement of Y → We measured Y
    It demonstrates close alignment with Z → It aligns closely with Z

    neekerbreeker,

    @staidwinnow @stancarey Hear, hear!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCud8H7z7vU

    On a related note (<- 😁) I see a lot of this: "The data shown in Figure 13 demonstrate that the observed degradation rates are similar."

    I'd argue that "shown" and especially "observed" should be removed. If the writer is making conclusions about degradation rates that weren't observed, we have a bigger problem than language.

    neekerbreeker,

    @stancarey Btw just noticed your profile pic and had to comment! The Burren is high on my bucket list if I ever get out that way.

    I love Irish culture and back in the early 1990s I read, "O Come Ye Back To Ireland" by Niall Williams and Christine Breen.

    They moved from New York to Kiltumper in the 80s and did a beautiful book series about their new life. Christine is an artist and mentioned working in The Burren. The geology and nature sound amazing!

    neekerbreeker,

    @ronanmcd Thanks, well said.

    Too many on the left in the US dismiss conservative religious extremists as "stupid", which suggests to me that they don't understand how long these movements have been in the planning and how organized the planners have been.

    SCOTUS is now a conservative juggernaut. Short term we can only minimize damage, and we must work together on a longterm plan.

    Should #tiktok be banned?
    (And pls tell me why)

    neekerbreeker,

    @realsimon Thanks for the poll! I voted No by the same rationale I don't support #bookbans. I don't want strangers deciding what information we can access.

    I hear about TikTok security risk. If there's adequate evidence I might reconsider, but I'm not tech-savvy enough to truly understand whether that risk is unique to TikTok given that for most people (at least in the US) our data is everywhere.

    neekerbreeker,

    @realsimon No, I did for a little while.

    I volunteer with an organization that does live call-in shows on YouTube and they're trying to grow on social media, so they started doing a pre-show on TikTok.

    I tried it but I feel like I'm already on too much social media. And I was a little worried about the security, so I closed my account.
