Still annoyed by injustice despite being so old. Still likes #cpfc despite decades of disappointment (or 'reality' as it's known in the football world). Writes software for a living but can never quite find enough people to buy it.

Also uses the Oxford comma and a double space after a full stop is second nature because I wrote school assignments on a typewriter. Do not @ me as I will die on these grammatical and formatting hills.

He gave women the option of being in the bedroom or in the kitchen.

His religion and blinkered views meant he could never see there was more than a binary choice for everyone.

Not been a great couple of weeks.

There was a Windows update that killed 70% of my business (had to rewrite a shitload of code because Microsoft and Backblaze wouldn’t). Will try to write a blog post on that later.

Now trying to deal with a situation where I’m arguing about privacy and doxing and being caught up between Dun & Bradstreet, Apple, and the European Union. Will also write a blog post on how that probably didn’t end well for any other software developer like me.

@decryption Yep. 25% of my sales are currently from the EU. I’ll just not sell there if Apple continues with this.

Will be great news just before WWDC.

Maybe I should try my local #parramatta Federal MP to see if he can do anything, if he ever deigns to actually spend time in this electorate.

Here’s a thing I see from jobseekers on the fediverse:

Y’all never talk about your human skills. You never list off what skills you have outside of a narrow technical band. You’ll write a description of someone an inch wide and a mile deep.

TBH, I can kick a tree and three of you fall out. How do I know you’re not a prick? How do I know how you’ll treat someone with great skills, just not in IT? What happens if you have to talk to humans who aren’t you?

How do you handle paradox?

nealon,
@nealon@aus.social avatar

@bynkii I have experience with this as I'm currently job hunting as a developer. The problem I'm finding is that all the pre-screening filters are only looking for hard tech keywords. Anything relating to how well you work with other people (which I agree is generally more valuable than tech skills) is ignored. So if you put that in it makes you look as if you're just padding it with irrelevant filler.

Hence everyone is forced down one (bad) path of promoting themselves without reference to social interactions because that's how you need to navigate the algorithm.

As a child #DoctorWho was my favourite show. It remains so today.

How long is that? I remember seeing Jon Pertwee episodes when they were originally broadcast.

I love what the show was in the past; I love what it is now. Bold, funny, weird, sad, thought-provoking, dramatic, silly, sometimes clunky but always with its hearts in the right place.

Loved ‘The Star Beast’. There were messages in there for people who aren’t like me. I really hope they empowered those people because that’s what this show should do. The show gave inspiration to somewhat nerdy non-sporting kids like myself in the past (using your brain actually helps you to win!) so it’s wonderful it still has its righteous desire to do the same these days despite some really sad parts of society loudly preferring to find ever-new scapegoats instead of facing up to their own inadequacies.

And it did so in a most enjoyable TV watching hour.

    @decryption Try the ‘We Buy Records’ podcast for some background info. I find it really interesting and enjoyable even though I don’t buy records. Both of the guys now run record shops and there’s stories of weird people - especially the vinyl collectors.

    Politics is like public transport. It may not get you exactly where you want but if you get on the one that gets you closest to your desired destination you have far less distance to travel on the remainder of your journey.

    @decryption Just accept that size is not the most important factor.

    Although when I mentioned this to female friends at coffee this morning their response was ‘no, size really does matter’.

    Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children in the United States.

    Every developed nation has people with mental illness, video games, disgruntled ex-employees, alienated people, homicidal and suicidal persons, etc. Why does the U.S. have the problem it does?

    It’s the same things it always is- the number of firearms, access to them, fetishism surrounding the 2nd Amendment, and the immense political power of the firearms industry.

    Not a Republican has the courage to step up.

    nealon,
    @nealon@aus.social avatar

    @TonyStark New rule: whenever there’s a mass shooting (interesting that Apple autocorrects ‘shooting’ to be any other word) you should be allowed to shoot the eldest child of any politician who has accepted NRA money.

    Mass shootings in the US would immediately - ironically - become a dead issue.

    “We could have spent the 100 million of taxpayer funds on reducing child poverty or improving education but one has obviously suffered so much in the last 73 years of my life that it’s far better that money be spent on a pointless ceremony for me in which I attain the role that’s already guaranteed to me by the fluke of my birth.

    I’m sure all the hungry children in the UK tonight will understand and appreciate that”. #coronation #KingCharles
