What do people like as far as external storage solutions for archiving these vast collections of media files and bullshit I keep accumulating? My Venn diagram encompasses reliability, size and affordability.

Speed is a lesser concern as long as I can watch the occasional MP4 movie off it without loading onto my primary drive. I've got almost 4tb of shit I need to access across at least two computers but it doesn't necessarily need to be networked, I can move it as needed. USB hookup.

@etherdiver I use a NAS cause Ive had it forever for just bulk storage and having something available. More recently Ive gotten a USB-C drive enclosure with space for 5 SATA drives. If I didn't already have the NAS I would be happy with the enclosure (DAS) because its quick to hook and unhook, I can throw in a drive super fast, even ones Ive retired, and adding it to the network is easy through OS drive sharing. 4-6tb drives seem to be a sweet spot of $ and reliability.

Man, why does everything happen at the worst possible time, all together? I'm facing my biggest financial crisis in a decade, might have to sell the house we JUST moved to and move back across the country less than 6 months later for different, non financial reasons, can't find a job AND now my computer is dying...

It's been a rough few months. Not sure when, or if, it's getting better.

@elijax @electronicmusic Of course having music on Spotify is not mutually exclusive with having it on Bandcamp, putting them up in opposition to each other just shows a misunderstanding of what Spotify even does for people. A reasonably organized producer should always have their product available in more places than Spotify which is in effect a promotional tool, not a primary income source.

@cascheranno @elijax @electronicmusic Starting close and working out.. family, friends, local gigs, local music groups in larger cities, websites, social media, soundcloud, youtube, TikTok previews, livestreaming, networking with other DJs/producers/streamers, utilizing adsense for low cost advertising, branded website, music blog interviews. We have no problem identifying low voter turnout as a consequence of political illegitimacy. People decline to vote because they recognize that voting will not produce meaningful change, because it’s not worth it and because they don’t want to participate in a corrupt system…

You apparently wonder why the lame people win. Because they participate. Not just 1 day every 4 years. Civil rights? Cause they marched, fundraised, voted, volunteered, practically sainted leaders that supported their movement. Anti-abortion (unfortunately) the same.

The lack of expected voting is a reflection of a deeply lazy and entitled populace.

Thats an example of when people got some stuff right followed by an example of when people got things extraordinarily wrong by just handwaving at abortion rights for 50 years think Roe V Wade would magically take care of it all while the other side feverishly worked to kill it.

I started 2023 with a handful of simple goals for my music, and as I accomplished them (or hit very close) I added a few more "stretch" goals to keep me engaged.
(Gotta gamify those tasks that aren't inherently rewarding or I'll never do them.)

Let's start with streams! I started the year with about 3,200 streams lifetime for the project, all but a few hundred from 2022. I had two goals regarding streams for the year: first, hitting 10,000 streams overall ...

@etherdiver Yea having goals for fans is huge. ..its a form of 'call to action' that streamers consistently talk about. Getting into streaming myself over the year and helping to setup others the years before that I can really see it importance as a tool. And as a fan.. it gives you a feeling of contributing to 'something' not just a stat somewhere that can always be bigger.

Don't get me wrong, I too am concerned, if not terrified, what Trumpy 2: Grifter Boogaloo - Full Fascist Edition is going to look like. I just don't think the best way to stop it is screaming in the face of anyone who points out the obvious fact that Biden is kind of sleepwalking into this thing.

@etherdiver Yup. They risk losing it once again because they think they should install someone that in their eyes 'deserves it'.

Nearly 350 mil people in this country.. the majority of which still fall into one category or the other. We absolutely have many people qualified and talented enough to do that job. Ridiculous that the entrenched interests have been allowed to make him the only one they've really considered.

@DemocracySpot Nah the vid doesn't even establish that. The war on Disco was anti elitist AND gay & lgbt liked and gathered around that artform along with every other artform. The 2 are not necessarily linked even in the vid.

What is true and was alluded to in the vid is the late 70s was financially difficult after prolonged wealth. Disco established itself as music for the jetset, rock & rap for the avg joe. Anti-Discoism rejected that lifestyle which had already priced them out.

I would like to take a moment to orient people to a brand new and highly innovative feature that was recently introduced in mastodon and many other fedi-apps. This feature enables you to not have to see posts from or interact with people whose posts you don’t like, don’t agree with, or are otherwise offended by.

I like to call it the “block button”.

Does someone on the fedi support the “other side” in the Israel/Hamas conflict? Instead of asking your moderators to figure out which side is objectively right in a no win situation, BLOCK! It’s amazing!

Did someone just say that they are frustrated that they got Covid after having gotten all the vaccines? That’s not disinformation, it’s an opinion and you can block them!

Does someone seem a little too happy that one of Biden’s staff got in trouble or that a democrat is getting charged? BLOCK! It’s amazing!

Did someone use the word Nazi in a way that offends you? Yep, you guessed it! BLOCK!

I have no idea what the median age of people on the fediverse are, but it’s disappointing that moderators are effectively having to act as camp counselors for 13 year olds who are having a disagreement. Yes, the substance of these disagreements tend to be much more consequential, but the pettiness is about the same or perhaps worse.

If someone is harassing you or otherwise violating your instances rules, please do report them, but try to apply some perspective.

@jerry @larthallor its not a challenge. It only becomes so if one allows their moderation decisions to be colored by their chosen side. A post being reported as inflammatory, is inflammatory to that user. Is the post racist (or any other mentioned *ist) .. then remove it. If not, don't.

This isn't the UN. No problem is being solved here that saves lives, only harm being done by people intentionally fanning flames of hatred.

Yes a lot of 'harmless' posts to 1s pov get taken out. Thats ok.

@AlgoCompSynth @composeroftheday oof as someone thats worked on establishing Wikipedia pages for artists thats really harsh on creators. I am the one that started and eventually got I_o's page going after some difficulty. Still 1.5 years I havent been able to get get Stoneface & Terminal's because WP's notability requirements are completely out of touch with how artists market themselves, even influential ones.

I'm all for decorping all we can. But not at the expense of those we feature.

I will die on the hill that the difficulty most people have with mastodon is that they create an account that comes essentially empty.

If we can in any way provide a "ready to go" starter account, like when you sign up for reddit you already have a basic "front page", this will remove 70% of the difficulties.

FFS, just give the option for people to choose some hashtags and some of the most popular people here as they are creating an account.

@FuckElon Yea .. that and that theres nothing feeding you interests.. and most people that arent content creators don't think they are that interesting ..or often know what they are. They like to look at a few things and then have new ideas presented to them that 'magically' relate.

The interest algorithms aren't inherently bad, using them to bad ends is inherently bad. People love Youtube and TikTok for their algs.

Auto workers are demanding a 40% raise to match the 40% pay increase CEOs of the Detroit automakers got over the past 4 years.

CEOs are calling this absurd, but they couldn't be more wrong.

THIS IS A COMPROMISE. Why? Because worker's real wages have fallen 30% over the past 20 years. They're foregoing 16 years of wage theft for 4 of equity, and consistent equity going forward. That's basic justice.

Pay workers. Unionize workers. Tax billionaires. Save our economy.

@QasimRashid I agree the workers should get increases AND the exec pay should be brought back down to reasonable levels probably to a point they were at in even the 70s or before. That is still a wealth gathering wage for them.

However it doesn't seem reasonable to ask for pay and benefits for the workers that goes back over 20 years. That timeframe covers the the time when they went bankrupt and had to shed costs and receive government bailouts to continue.
