If you are trying to #degoogle your life, be aware that one of the unpleasant side effects is that a shit ton of people will not be able to receive #email from you. I've been on an email address handled by my shared server provider for like 15 years now, and I can attest that #google and #yahoo are both pretty bad for blocking anything from a #domain outside the big providers.

@wagesj45 how do you do, fellow selfhoster. Do the MTA responses give an insight as to why the delivery fails? Google and Yahoo have been reasonably simple, Outlooks been a bitch

Going through this excellent book by Shaun Pinner, much recommended! There’s many lessons to learn from this book but from my #infosec angle there are a few. Firstly, always keep an off-line maps app on your phone (I use OsmAnd). As a test — switch on airplane mode and try to survive for a day. Can you still navigate from point A to point B? Secondly, keep your social media profiles friends-only access. Thirdly, don’t keep any passwords in memory - it’s a bad practice from security point of view anyway, but I never thought about the interrogation angle. A password manager locked with biometrics and PIN and random passwords everywhere will prevent you from finding yourself in situation where you’ll be begging your interrogators to check another password because you might have remembered wrong.

    @kubikpixel @thunderbird @rust Microsoft wird mit nix nachziehen. Das ist schon seit den Halloween papers eine bekannte Taktik: man ist mit nix kompatibel, macht sich zum Standard und Zack sind Freie Alternativen drastisch im Zugzwang kompatibel zu sein, während Microsoft die Schultern zuckt und sagt: "Tja keine Ahnung warum keiner unser 'offenes' Protokoll implementiert. Sind ja nur 120 MB Standarddokument"

    Microsoft interessiert sich nen scheiß für seine User, aber das ist nix neues ^^

    It's not very popular, but I wonder if signing release tarballs with the release manager's private key would go some ways towards alleviating xz-esque woes, at the very least making distros aware that an upstream has changed hands and having to do due diligence to fix their builds

    mpldr,
    @mpldr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @drewdevault I don't think so. While it is certainly useful, signing the tarballs doesn't help. Since the perpetrator had a position of trust, this would still have happened.

    Say I build a website which lets you browse the Linux kernel source code. The website includes a script which is distributed with the CDDL license. You're working on modifying Firefox for use in Debian, but you haven't changed the name. You're viewing this website when your modified version of Firefox crashes.

    You're asked to share the core dump when you report the bug. What is the license of the code dump file?

    mpldr,
    @mpldr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @drewdevault assuming this would reach the level of licensable, which I don't think is the case, whatever license you give it. If you create an image using the GPL, its not automatically GPL. In the same way the license of the generated dump is not affected by the crashing program.

    mpldr,
    @mpldr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @lanodan @drewdevault they very much do not. They contain the process memory, not the process binary. Hence the need for the binary path when working with them. Without the binary, you'd hardly get anything of value out of them. I do not know if it contains the loaded instructions at time of the signal, but even that could hardly be called a redistribution.

    @drewdevault at least they were honest enough in their announcement to make clear that this is a move to monopolise their niche. Dick move, but at least they don't sugarcoat it with "user-experience yadayada".

    What's become of this world that calling ones own anticompetitive behaviour like that had become a "win"?

    SourceHut is dealing with a huge spam attack, 36% of all new user registrations in February have been spam so far. I hear over the forge grapevine that a lot of other platforms are dealing with a huge surge in spam, too.

    mpldr,
    @mpldr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @drewdevault it's surprising that Google wouldn't filter this kind of junk and doesn't use it in scoring.

    Oh wait. Looking at the junk copycat sites that just have a few paragraphs of continuous keyword spam at the bottom that then show Google advertising to monetise this. Yeah. It kinda checks out. Everyone wins, except the user.

    Added a couple more cases to my open source confusion project:

    • APITable - Misrepresenting the AGPLv3 to encourage use of their enterprise license.
    • Nango - Advertising as open source under the Elastic v2 license.

    Also added Metabase as an addressed case & positive example of them clearing up their potential AGPL confusion.

    @danb Got another one: FUTO. Advertising themselves as Open-Source but of their in-house projects a total of 1 manages to clear that high bar. I've sent them a request last week which went unanswered so far.

    mpldr,
    @mpldr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @danb they are careful with their wording: "All FUTO-funded projects are expected to be open-source or develop a plan to eventually become so."

    1/6 isnt exactly a great quota though. Most oft their code is under the "FUTO temporary license" (non-free)
