So finally more or less spotted our new nightly visitor. Came in earlier last night so I surprised it opening the patio door. Might have been a racoon (it was bigger than expected) but pretty sure it's a cacomistle. Seems it was hunting for mice or lizards. Even one of the squirrels abandoned the tree. Little fella did come back later, as the fruit I left last night was gone. Gotta strategize how to take a pic, seems very skittish #UrbanWildlife

Also, over a week ago the Academy announced the Scientific and Technical (SciTech) awards. Lots of #VFX, #CGI and #animation related ones: OpenVDB, Alembic, Marvelous Designer and USD. Cool that many of the people you see and hear at #SIGGRAPH are represented here. Other awards include different laser projection systems, Dolby Atmos and systems used in stunt work. Congrats to all the winners. #movies #AcademyAwards

So the time has come to slow down my older movies and letterboxd challenge watches and start catching up on awards season movies. Only seen 10 of the 53 nominated movies. Not sure of the BAFTAs, haven't found a good list to check

Why do I have to be so tired when I get home during the week #movies

malducin,
@malducin@mastodon.social avatar

@gavgraham wasn't even sure about the number, went to the BAFTA site and it mentioned 38 films?

Last year excluding more obscure categories like short documentaries, etc that are hard to find I think I only missed like 3 available movies before the BAFTAs, For the Oscars I literally finished the last one I had like a few hours before the telecast. Too much pressure!

malducin,
@malducin@mastodon.social avatar

@gavgraham nice! just what I need as a reference to better keep track of things. Still just 10 of 46.

So you get access to the long list (that's the 236 you mentioned right?). Are there any dating apps for Academy or BAFTA members? That is such a nice perk. Guess I'll check if some of the shorts are available free, to watch during the week. Caught several last year when they were made freely accessible.

Some of my favorite movies from 2023 and how to watch them in the United States (updated):

malducin,
@malducin@mastodon.social avatar

@tvaziri have to say that your list made me watch sooner, rather than later The Killer (had forgotten it was Fincher), Reality, Bottoms and Past Lives. Some I've already seen, but now with Awards season, the pressure is on

So while I can't say for sure a cacomistle is visiting the house, there's certainly some visitor late at night.

Yesterday I left two figs, one slice of apple and several grapes, and all gone this morning. Maybe one weekend I can stay up late at night to hopefully get a glimpse of it. Maybe install the motion sensor to only flash but not make a loud noise, just to be on the lookout #UrbanWildlife

I don’t think RottenTomatoes is all that useful. People interpret the percentage as a grade, and it’s too easy to game things — the list goes on — but if you’re going to put it on everyone else’s movies then you have to play fair.

malducin,
@malducin@mastodon.social avatar

@virtualbri @CStamp @joesteel same here. barely use it any more but mostly for top critics and mainly the ones I know (and what their tastes are like). Much like Siskel and Ebert.

Nowadays I think letterboxd ratings are a much more useful, and even then I might dive to see reviews/ratings of users I follow that I think might be a better guide.

So my first cacomistle experiment seems to have worked, Left a slice of apple late at night on the roof, so the squirrels were asleep and I doubt a cat took it away. It was gone early this morning. Might continue this experiment a few more times while trying to figure out a way to maybe spot it and take a pic. #UrbanWildlife

So basically from now on, every 4K release (unless shot natively that way) is gonna be throw into an AI enhancer and hope it's OK. Instead of lets do a new scan, restore, process, etc. #movies #4K

malducin,
@malducin@mastodon.social avatar

@Kristofferabild nothing specific, Cameron was the most egregious example. But I shudder to think what would happen if say, something like Drangonslayer didn't have a 4K restoration (I know it has) and was just an AI upscale. Plus I'm not such a huge fan of the film grain removal.

Maybe along those lines I think several Scorsese and Fincher ones still aren't in 4K.

Also I'm sorta complaining beforehand, still have only 2k TVs at home and not looking into buying a 4K TV soon.

    @virtualbri I've watched the 1st season and loved it. Since I'm somewhat disconnected from streaming news didn't realized it was cancelled before a proper ending. Bummer. will watch the other 2 season though

    And learning more I still am! Over these 13 years, I’ve had the luck to join team ILM on so many projects in different ways, some big, some small, and each has taught me something new. I hope year 13 keeps the trend of always “learning more tomorrow”.

    Found this article about David Benioff & Dan Weiss interesting, especially the part about not getting executive producers credit on House of the Dragon, which was essentially free money.

    The real meat is of course the upcoming Three Body Problem, and that tidbit about their cancelled movie, which at least had the the angle to be totally detached from current characters, movies and TV shows.

    Looking forward to

    The Mandalorian & Grogu (probably May 2026), directed by Jon Favreau, is the next Star Wars movie. Production begins this year, in place of The Mandalorian Season 4, which was postponed due to the strikes.

    We also get official confirmation for Ahsoka Season 2.

    @vandalsibs @TheSpaceshipper ahh must have missed that bit of news. Most of the reporting seemed to be about which movies would be affected and their schedules, but didn't read much about TV productions except most of the 2023-24 season would probably be scrapped.

    Good to know!
