i'm still undecided as to the merits of various text editors, but i checked out Helix and it's sort of heartbreaking how excited they seem about it being a Chromium base... something that is, for me, a negative

if you have a favorite text editor with a GUI (sorry i'm not ready to launch into the vimlikes yet) i'd love to hear it though! i feel like i just use atom, brackets or (vs)code(or the OSS version) out of habit rather than particularly liking any of them

Asking for a friend (literally): What happens to existing Windows 11 machines now? Do the get the spyware enhancement force-fed to them on the next Patch Tuesday? Is there an opt-out?

I may need to play the risk mitigation card with the business I do contract work for, since I occasionally touch a Win 11 laptop that's used in manufacturing and QA workflows.

lucky,
@lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

@phil_stevens No! The new snapshotting feature is only supported by new hardware, so they're going to be trying to sell it to you over the next few years -- they can't force it (at least the way it's been presented) onto existing PCs.

So we've got DHH regurgitating (and promoting) transphobic talking points this week, with a history of parroting harmful racist rubbish in the past.

Will we see any Rails Core team members speaking out against this? Any sponsors of RailsWorld? Any founding/board members of the Rails Foundation?

Or is it cowardly silence (or worse, agreement), just like in the past?

lucky,
@lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

@can @pat he's recommending a new unpleasant-at-best book by the author of "Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters", which is just as bizarre as it sounds https://world.hey.com/dhh/bad-therapy-08849dc9

Do you have examples of words like "helicopter," that people instinctively shorten incorrectly?

(Helicopter is "helico pter," not "heli copter," making derivative concepts like "helipads" and "roflcopters" nonsensical.)

lucky,
@lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

@nyquildotorg people don't necessarily shorten it, but "bikini" is from the Bikini Atoll, but everyone pretends it's"bi" like two, hence "monokini" for a one piece is nonsensical. Really does it for me

lucky,
@lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

@nyquildotorg if I remember correctly this is sometimes referred to as "rebracketing" so you might be able to find more examples with that. Such a great phenomenon

Is it me being fussy or do other people think that news media, including specialist tech news media, doesn’t do a great job reporting AI? Specifically, there’s often not enough explaining and background information for someone coming new to a story to get a handle on it.

lucky,
@lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett no, I totally agree. I also have issues with how much of it uncritically repeats marketing.

    One clear lesson from this weekend’s election. NZ Mastodon, or at least the politically vocal segment, is not even remotely politically representative of New Zealand as a whole.

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    @billbennett i suspect large swaths of Mastodon (at least the parts we see, because of effective moderation) are left-leaning; it can be nice having that bubble, but humiliating to remember that's what it is!

    @spacefinner i found a blog from a conspiracy theory vegan at one point (as opposed to a regular vegan) who believed that eating any amount of protein led to constipation which lead to impure sexual thoughts and ideally human beings should eat no protein, poop liquid and never want sex, and aside from those facts the thing that really sticks with me was that he referred to non vegans as "CARNISTS" and "CORPSE EATER CULTURE" in all caps

    here's another HUD and item that will not be named because i'm not here to shame specific people, who probably don't know what they've purchased (and this is far from the worst HUD, more on that later). why does it take twice as much memory? and why does it have to load each time, spamming the chat with messages, before it can be used?

    it's hard to tell for sure since you're not allowed to modify the scripts, but i have some guesses...

    screenshots of the chat window in second life being spammed with "Config ready, HUD ready, receiver ready" loading messages

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    the receiver AND the HUD both have TWO scripts in them. one is to make the thing work, and one is a "config". maybe the "config" script is allowed to be edited by end users? or maybe the "config" script reads user-input information and saves it? none of this is necessary -- it could be done with one script. more annoyingly, i've seen these HUDs around a lot, and if you have "materials" as well (specular and normal maps), those are separate scripts!

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    this means i've seen plenty of items where the HUD and the receiver items EACH contain three to four scripts, all of which are using at least 64kb of memory each, just to apply user-defined textures and materials. (my HUD does both in the same script because why wouldn't it?)

    again, though, this is not the worst HUD by far. let's go find a worse one!

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    here's a pair of shoes i really like. okay the receiver is taking 128kb, that's normal-ish, but OH MY GOD WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE HUD? note that this HUD doesn't do anything particularly spectacular, it just lets you select between like 16 different textures to apply to 3 different faces of the 3d model. this could definitely be done in 64kb or even less!

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    i got very confused the first time i went on this adventure, because if you open up this HUD in edit mode, you actually see it contains.... nothing. there's no script in the root object of the HUD at all. why?

    because once you start going through all the buttons... all 23 of the buttons... you realize EVERY SINGLE ONE has a script inside of it. every single button is also its own 1024 pixel texture that has to load for the user!

    it's so unnecessary and so so funny and so common

    lucky,
    @lucky@mastodon.nz avatar

    this is also not the worst HUD i've seen, though it's the worst i own. i know HUDs that take 4000kb of script memory -- enough to run DOOM!

    what can you as a creator do?

    if you see an item with a great HUD, edit it and see what's inside! you might find a brand of script maker to look up :)

    buy scripts that let you edit them if at all possible! experiment! ask for help!

    and PLEASE let buyers modify your item to delete your scripts when they're done ;_;
