The former Saint Vincent Parish Church on Kent Road in Glasgow looking wonderful amongst the cherry blossoms. Designed by Alexander Wall in a Gothic style, it was built in 1864.

@thisismyglasgow I walked past that just yesterday. The whole effect was stunning (I've been inside too, someone I used to know lived there after it was converted into housing - very oddly shaped flats!)

After hearing about it from @thisismyglasgow, I made my own way up to Stockingfield Junction on the canal today to see the new sculpture up there. I've been along there before, not that long ago, so I'm very surprised I haven't spotted it before, but it's rather fab. It's apparently a Beithir and is kin to the Kelpies at Falkirk.
There's also a (world) egg in its mouth, representing hope, but the light wasn't right to get a picture of that.

@thisismyglasgow thanks! I managed to get up earlier while the sun was still shining (got home in time to get my washing off the line before it got wet too!).

How much better would the Mitchell Library look if the M8 was covered over and the area in front of it turned into a public square or an urban park?

@thisismyglasgow I know that there had been talk of that, but the last I'd heard, it had been canned (again).

My office is at Charing cross, and I hate crossing the motorway there. I'd love to see it covered.

I got an email today from the #Glasgow bike hire scheme, doubling the cost of PAYG and monthly standard bike hire (and removing annual subs) and increasing electric bike hire by 75%.

Well done #NextBike, you've just made it cheaper to hire an electric car for an hour from the car club than an electric bike (£5.50/hr + 12p mileage vs £3.50/20 minutes = £10.50/hr)

I could justify previously justify splashing out on an ebike to get somewhere, as it was a fun way to travel. Now it's not worth it.

The magnificent head of Bella the Beithir at Stockingfield Junction on the Forth and Clyde Canal in the north of Glasgow. Created by Nichol Wheatley, when finished Bella will be 121 metres long as her body weaves through the hill above the Stockingfield Bridge. Commissioned by Scottish Canals, it's a companion piece to the Kelpies in Falkirk as both feature Scottish mythological beasts associated with water.

@thisismyglasgow ooh, I sometimes walk as far as the new bridge, but have never crossed it. I'll have to head along and take a look at this - it looks gorgeous!

Red sandstone tenement building on Park Road in the Woodlands area of Glasgow. This might not be the grandest of tenement buildings, but there's still something about the simplicity of its lines and curves which draws your eyes towards it.

This is a lovely short(ish) film about a class of primary school kids discovering the Govan Stones, and learning more about their own history. It's rather lovely: https://vimeo.com/294109808

And for #WorldCon folks, Govan Old (where the Stones live) is only a half hour walk (or 10 minute taxi ride) from the con venue, I definitely recommend visiting, if you get the chance.

If you look up at one of the tenement buildings on the top half of Byres Road in the West End of Glasgow, you'll see it bears the legend Victoria Cross. This seems a bit out of place until you find out that when it was built, Byres Road was called Victoria Street.

Cont./

lordofthemoon,
@lordofthemoon@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow I thought that Byres Road was the historical name of the street, and the council tried to rename it, but the locals were having none of it?

Former warehouse on Argyle Street in Glasgow. Designed by James Thomson and R McConnel in a Venetian style, it was built in 1863. To the right (and just visible) is the Central Station viaduct created by James Miller and Donald Mathieson around 1900.

I love the ornate lamp posts in front of Glasgow Cathedral. They're based on the four symbols from the city's coat of arms, which are, in turn, taken from events in the life of Saint Mungo who founded Glasgow and to whom the cathedral was dedicated when in was consecrated in 1197.

The fact that they're shaped like a bishop's crozier and the use of palm trees rather than the usual oak tree are nice touches for this location.

Saint Andrew's Parish Church in the east end of Glasgow. Designed by timber and lead merchant Alan Dreghorn and built in 1739, it's based on James Gibb's Saint Martin-in-the-Fields, which was built in 1722. This was the first large scale classical church in Scotland.

Are the lamps on Kelvin Way Bridge the most ornate street lights in Glasgow? I think they might just be!

Sculpted by Paul Raphael Montford between 1914 and 1924, these lamps consist of four allegorial groups of larger than life figures representing eight aspects of Glasgow civil society: Peace and War, Navigation and Shipbuilding, Commerce and Industry; and Philosophy and Inspiration (the pair shown here).
