Yeah ha ha that Google’s AI tells you to eat rocks sometimes but y’all have heard of olives right? The food served with a tiny rock in the middle?

The reason I have a molar implant that cost me about ten grand?

Imagine if they sold pies with rocks in them. I’d be able to sue Big Pie. But olives, sure, they’re ‘natural’, great, ship ‘em.

A curious incident. Can anyone offer pointers?

Wednesday night we stayed in a motor lodge. Lucy booked it via Booking.com.

Thursday 16:00 she got an email from Booking.com saying ‘your review is live!’. She had written no such review, whose title was ‘Godd’, had no content, and was a 10 rating.

(This motor lodge was okay. A ten it was not.)

Thursday 21:00 she got an email from Booking.com asking her to review the property.

WTF. She’s contacting Booking.com now.

Independent of each other, Lucy and I discovered Hans Rosling. Me via @sarajw I believe?

Anyway, she currently has his book ‘Factfulness’ on loan from the library.

And I just got a notification from the library that my reservation of ‘Factfulness’ is now available and is ready for collection.

We had no idea. Totally independent lines of thought.

(We’ve already both read his bio, ‘How I Learned to Understand the World’. A delight.)

The newspaper used to cost money.

I'd buy the Independent for my train ride to London. Back in the early 2000s I guess it was about a pound. Every day I'd spend a pound to read the news.

Hundreds of thousands of people would do the same. That money went to the newspaper, who used it to sustain their business; to pay their rent.

And to pay the journalists that wrote all the content. Who then used that money to pay their rent, and to eat.

Doesn't seem that difficult a concept to grasp?

My sister was rescued today by a man from Kettering.

She got a flat tyre. Cars these days don’t come with a spare. (Who knew?) The inflate-with-foam can from the service station didn’t work.

It’s Sunday morning in the UK. She’d been at a service station for 3 hours. Everything’s closed.

Then a random man noticed, and offered to help.

“Drive my car home”, he said. So she’s on her way back to Bristol in his Mercedes.

Most people are amazing.

Very, very few aren’t. Don’t let them ruin it.

So as (someone?) recommended, I installed Keka instead of the Unarchiver and it looks nice but I am sure the next time I need to know what’s it called I will have no idea.

Please name your apps like “Keka archiver” or something old people with defective memory chips may find by searching. “Made a zip in keka. Attached it to a mail I wrote in Groumpf to a contact I had stored in Yoplà based on a note from Joplin” (at least one of these is an actual app).

johnnydecimal,
@johnnydecimal@hachyderm.io avatar

@santiago Remember you can add comments to any app in the standard system info sheet — Cmd+I brings it up — and they’ll be found by Spotlight.

So you can add what the dev didn’t.

Any gurus want to help me solve a puzzle? Maybe @robb? Honestly I don't know where to start.

The 'Location' box at the top of my page works great. Except on landscape mobile, where the corners are all janky as the lines don't line up: see screenshot.

But if I take my desktop browser, pop it in responsive mode, and shrink the window: it's A-OK!

WTF?

A screenshot of Safari in responsive mode. The window is 591px wide and the lines look great!

Request for help: how do I learn Mac software development?

I’m looking for is a list of the best resources. Including but not limited to:

  • YouTube channels.
  • Courses, paid included.
  • Blogs or other personal sites that will tell me what to do.
  • Podcasts? Though I don’t see audio as the ideal medium here.

Who’s the Wes Bos of Swift? Who will mainline me information as fast as I can absorb it?

There aren't enough corned beef recipes. It's basically just corned beef and cabbage, corned beef hash, reubens or make it into pastrami

johnnydecimal,
@johnnydecimal@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online Corned beef pie! Been making this since I was a kid. Well, mam made it when I was a kid then I grew up then I made it.

  1. For a ~12” wide ~1” deep pie pan.
  2. Boil 3 large potatoes.
  3. Chop a medium onion. Do half quite fine, the other half a bit chunkier.
  4. Blind-bake puff pastry on your pie base.
  5. When spuds are boiled, drain, add chopped onion, tin of corned beef, good helping of fresh ground pepper.
  6. Top with puff pastry.
  7. Bake, ~180C for about half an hour.

Best cold.

@robb Son-of-a-gun. That's brilliant.

My mate Kristy met a bloke and they had a baby and they didn't love either of their surnames. The combinations just didn't work for either of them.

So they just changed them. To 'Wild’. Because they wanted to.

Hopefully quick CSS question:

If you declare layers in one stylesheet, do you have to have the styles associated with those layers within or imported into the same stylesheet, or can they exist in completely different files, as long as they're all linked into the same html via the head?

Thank you!

#CSS

johnnydecimal,
@johnnydecimal@hachyderm.io avatar

@sarajw @mrtrimble Argh, how did I not even know about layers until now? Super glad I read this before tearing out all my CSS and re-writing it, which I 100% need to do because it’s a shambles.
