I needed a break from Real Work, so I'm speedrunning writing a Unix-ish operating system

Day 3

jistr,

@drewdevault Are there resources that you use or that you'd recommend to someone wanting to learn about these low-level OS topics? Perhaps some books / websites or something like that?

jistr,

@drewdevault 👍 thank you.

jistr,

@drewdevault I prefer the "command fails and i re-run" workflow.

Hm, bit of a long shot, but are there any physicists on here? I have a question: as the universe expands, light traveling through space is redshifted, which means it loses energy. Thermodynamics tells us that energy can't just disappear. Where does that energy go?

jistr,

@drewdevault @pmdj Wouldn't you just harvest energy that would otherwise be absorbed by something else? So you're not creating free energy, you're "stealing it" from surroundings? In non-relativistic speeds i would imagine e.g. a lawn sprinkler, you can either stand and get showered by "your dose" of droplets, or you can run around (imagine very very fast) and collect a lot more droplets than would have hit you while standing. I'm not a physicist though so forgive me if i'm saying nonsense.

I’ve just had my phone’s OS updated and upon reboot, it showed a prompt where I was asked to choose the default search engine.

Truly, Google is the new Microsoft.

jistr,

@shadower Yea and selecting DuckDuckGo as the engine actually installs a new DDG browser, rather than just letting me use that bar to open a search in Firefox... I can't wait for Linux phones to become a real alternative, which would finally allow me to say goodbye to all this megacorp nonsense on phones, just like i did on desktop computing.

jistr,

@deshipu @shadower Well i have a Fedora phone and it's ok except i imagine this is how it felt to use Linux on desktop in ~1995 :). The apps are getting there, but what's desperately needed is getting a lot more phone hardware drivers properly into the mainline kernel, at least for some "community's choice" hardware. It's hard work and there aren't many people who are able && willing to do it...

jistr,

@deshipu @shadower I'm not an expert on that topic and likely you're right on the cellular part. If blobs are needed somewhere, then so be it. But the common hardware problems are a lot more basic than that. E.g. for PineTab2 tablet that i have, AFAIK the display and wifi drivers are still making it into mainline despite the device being released >year ago. There is a community around OnePlus 6 i think, but even that is an aging phone that can only be bought second hand.
