@SallyStrange I'm sorry, Sally. Post as much as you need to, ofc! <3

for some reason, an empty beach this morning, even though, for the first time in days, it isn’t raining. There is nothing more beautiful than two (or more) border collies running full tilt together. #bordercollie #dogsofmastodon

@mirijb2 I love going to the dog beach to live vicariously through them

I'm thinking of calling artificial intelligence "magic fingers" from now on as it's a coin-operated technology nobody thinks is very effective but is good for a laugh. And if a CEO replaced 15% of their workforce with "magic fingers," they should be immediately fired.

All right Mastodon scolds and liberals, you win, I will never post about voting/electoralism nuance again...

but to a person, you didn't convince me that you're right, just obnoxious

just to expand on Arendt's whole banality of evil thing: this entire climate crisis, gaza genocide and a great deal of past and modern white supremacy and colonizer bullshit coasts on social processes made possible by careerism and respectability politics. the road to right now has been so polite, so professional

inquiline,

@StillIRise1963 I hope these schools get sued to shit and lose. But it's still terrible that students would have to waste time and money that way; while the universities have counsel and just dig their heels in with disciplinary garbage.

An amazing theory of change I just received in my mentions:

"If Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, and Moderates all united and voted in EVERY election for Every Democrat against EVERY republicans, states like Texas would be Blue over night"

(I need to step away from the screen, apologies for annoying everyone!) #uspol

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@CedarTea Last I heard some people in Texas were fascists and others have their votes suppressed quite effectively, and it's possible those two things are related, but what do I know

People shaming others to vote and saying we mustn't say anything bad about Biden/DNC makes more sense when they reveal that they think the problem is the voters, not the very, very rigged system we are forced to submit to

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

Just a reminder, something like 70% of USians support voting rights, support reproductive rights, support climate protections, and support unions. People in the US not having secure access to those things is not the fault of voters or their political attitudes, actually

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@inthehands @chargrille I've been having some wild arguments on here the past several days. People saying the populace has the leaders it supports/deserves. These discussions are unproductive--there are certain things that, it turns out, people just impute to you even if you're not saying them. (For instance, I haven't been saying I don't vote; I've only been saying it's not the panacea some are making it out to be.) And people are scared. But IMO Biden admin gave up the game w not passing VRA.

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@inthehands @chargrille I know; but isn't Biden also responsible for, like, throwing absolutely all his political capital (or not, as the case may have been) at that issue? To me that was the lever and without flipping it, so many other things we might care about become essentially impossible. I tend to think presidents can often get things done if they really want to & throw weight around; tho ofc I acknowledge how corrupt and dysfunctional Congress is too.

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@seachanger What I don't especially get is the rage at people pointing out how 1, this isn't working; and 2, it doesn't have to be this way. I sometimes have this trouble with undergraduate students where they think that to name an undesirable dynamic is tantamount to endorsing it, because it is so offensive that we must give it power over us by extreme disavowal, or something. Then they learn the critical vocabulary and become less timid, usually

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@inthehands @chargrille I'm not saying he can do anything he wants. I'm saying there could have been threats of stripping them of committee assignments or something. Maybe it still doesn't work! Maybe he had Schumer do that & I missed it; I'd buy it if you said that happened. But what I see is a lot of privileging of things being the way they have always been for comity's sake when very existential things are at stake, & yes I do blame Biden for that, probably as wrong person for the moment.

I'm all for calling out antisemitism when we see it here. It's appropriate to ask people to delete or edit posts that shade into antisemitic tropes, even unwitting ones, for instance.

But, emotional reaction to harsh criticism of a state is not prima facie evidence that this criticism is antisemitic. Sometimes the text is the text.

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@liferstate @anothersociologist I'm not especially comfortable wading into a somewhat sensitive discussion w an acct that has no follows, bio, or interactions except these + yelling at Phil Cohn. You may have good reason to be anon if pretenure or something but it is not ideal for free discussion

Re specific case, I did not follow closely, tho seems med racism > Zionism if that's what was meant. Both more specific & plenty capacious for US dynamics, w/o any antisemitic overtones
