Album of the Day 158: Animals by Pink Floyd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX8MNSINSuA&list=OLAK5uy_kOf4fViqHyzRqgXYXcv29IzdahokdeZdE&index=1

1977 prog rock album from one of the all time greats. Kind of the red-headed stepchild of Pink Floyd's mainstream peak. It's a solid album that suffers mostly from being surrounded by some of the greatest albums of all time.

Fun fact: David Gilmour played bass on both "Pigs" and "Sheep," with bassist Roger Waters playing rhythm guitar instead.

My picks: "Dogs," "Pigs (Three Different Ones)"

#AlbumOfTheDay #AOTD #Music

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 It’s a fantastic album. There are days when I prefer Animals to DSOTM or WYWH.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 WYWH is the best alround albums I think but I’d have to list DSOTM, WYWH and Animals as joint favourites for me really. I love them all for different reasons and they suit different moods. I like The Wall a lot too but it's never been close to being a favourite.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I think that's the golden period. I’m tempted to add Meddle to the list too but that's mostly for One Of These Days and Echoes.

I also really like A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell but that's probably because they were the albums that came out during my formative years for music.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 The later albums definitely aren’t up to the quality of their peak albums but I like them. Pulse is a fantastic live album.

Dante has always laid on his scratching boxes so I got him one shaped like a chaise longue. He’s now sleeping on it.

Disney Lorcana is a fun game. It’s easy to play and the cards are fairly easy to understand. It’s still possible to get resource starved but not to the same extent as in Magic.

Album of the Day 74: Spiderland by Slint

https://slint.bandcamp.com/album/spiderland-remastered

1991's Spiderland sits somewhere at the intersection of post-rock, post-hardcore, and math rock. Unusual song structures, vocals that range from spoken-word whispers to shouts, and sudden dynamic shifts punctuated by distorted guitars.

The ending of "Good Morning, Captain" is incredibly haunting.

My picks: "Breadcrumb Trail," "Washer," "Good Morning, Captain"

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 One of the best albums ever recorded and hugely influential. Spiderland is an album I listen to pretty regularly.

I also really like The For Carnation, a band formed by Brian McMahan in 1994.

Album of the Day 68: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

https://godspeedyoublackemperor.bandcamp.com/album/lift-your-skinny-fists-like-antennas-to-heaven

While F♯ A♯ ∞ is iconic, Lift Your Skinny Fists is Godspeed's definitive album. Post-rock with a classical bent, with plenty of influence from film soundtracks.

While the whole album is well worth the listen, "Sleep" might just be my favorite song of all time, especially the second movement. ("Broken Windows, Locks of Love Pt. III")

#AlbumOfTheDay #AOTD #Music

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 Both are excellent albums. I don’t think I could pick a favourite. It’s a good excuse to listen to both again though! 😁

For a change we played Everdell tonight. I love this game (played solo and have the app) but it didn’t go down so well with the others. It’s one of those games that gets better the more you play it so I’ll have to persuade everyone to try it a few more times.

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is the debut studio album by the American punk rock band Dead Kennedys, released on this day in 1980.

howrandom,

@historyofpunkrock @tangleofwires Great record! I’d heard of Dead Kennedys and Jello Biafra in the 80s but was more into metal. Punk wasn’t a priority so I didn’t listen to them. Then in the 90s BBC Radio 1 would occasionally play California Über Alles and I’ve been listening to them ever since.

I decided to try #Bluesky having heard a lot of other science writers are there. Of course, I’ll happily stay at Mastodon, but am curious to check it out.

If anyone wants to connect, my handle is the same there @sheril.bsky.social

howrandom,

@Sheril I got my invite this week so signed up (and have followed you). I'll be staying with Mastodon too. I do think #Bluesky is better than #Threads though.

For anyone who's interested I'm @howrandom.bsky.social on Bluesky.

Album of the Day 32: To Be Kind by Swans

https://swans.bandcamp.com/album/to-be-kind

Dark and intense experimental rock.

My picks: "Screen Shot," "A Little God In My Hands," "Oxygen"

#AlbumOfTheDay #AOTD #music

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I must say, your taste in music is excellent. Here’s yet another band I love. I’d take any of their albums from Soundtracks for the Blind onwards to be honest.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 Early no wave Swans would work in a noisy environment. 😆

I do have a pretty broad music taste so overlap with quite a few people. Having said that it’s uncanny how many albums you’ve mentioned that I like. 😁

Album of the Day 25: The Silent Ballet: Volume 1 by Various

https://archive.org/details/LostChildren007

The Silent Ballet was a website focused on mostly post-rock music. Between 2006 and 2010, they released 16 compilation albums, all released under the CC BY-NC-ND license.

While The Silent Ballet is mostly defunct—they generate top 100 albums and tracks lists once a year—the Creative Commons license means these albums are still available. It's a sort of window into a period of time.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I think one of the advantages of getting old is being there at the birth of a music genre. I was 17 when Talk Talk released Spirit of Eden. Post-rock wasn’t even a thing then. I don’t remember when the term “post-rock” was invented but I found out I’d been listening to it for years.

I remember reading Fearless: The Making of Post-Rock and thinking “I listened to a lot of these bands in the 90s”.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I think Laughing Stock is the better album but everyone says Spirit is one of the first post-rock albums.

I liked early synth pop Talk Talk (along with Depeche Mode and Soft Cell) so I got into post-rock by accident, listening to later Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis then Tortoise and Swans then Godspeed! and plenty of others along the way.

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 It is a wild transformation but I didn’t notice at the time. Spirit was just the new Talk Talk album and the Colour of Spring was heading that way anyway.

I remember when No Doubt (another band I love) released It’s My Life. I knew I knew the song but I couldn’t immediately place it because, by then, it was almost from another world.

Alice, to random
@Alice@beige.party avatar

I’m so non-confrontational that I feel like I spend half of my life pretending I’m dumb just so I can avoid arguments with unreasonable people who are unwilling to admit when they’re wrong.

“Oh, really? That’s so interesting. I always thought it was [fact], but I guess you learn something new every day. Talk to you later!”

howrandom,

@Alice This was me for years. Now, if I know I’m right, I will absolutely argue my case. It took a long time to get the confidence though.

If there's one thing I love about Final Girl, it nails the theme and atmosphere it's aiming for and Into the Void is no exception. It's fantastic! If you like Alien and Final Girl then get this. I lost badly and really need to play this again.

NB In my haste to get a photo (I've been forgetting a lot lately) I set up a couple of things wrong. I fixed it before I actually started playing. Mostly.

I have today off but the weather forecast isn't good.

Luckily I have Final Girl with the Carnage at the Carnival and Into the Void film boxes to play.

I have a selection of beer to drink while I play (from left to right: Sainsbury’s London Porter, Brewdog’s Rattle & Rum, St Austell’s Proper Black, Mad Squirrel’s Aztec Mountain IPA and Robinson’s Old Tom).

Album of the Day 10: Blood Money by Tom Waits

https://tomwaits.bandcamp.com/album/blood-money-anniversary-edition

This is from a musical adaptation of Woyzeck, a play about a German soldier who's driven over the edge by a quack doctor then murders his unfaithful wife. It's a madhouse of jazz and carnival music with vocals from a man whose voice "sounds like industry," as my one friend put it.

My picks: "Everything Goes to Hell," "The Part You Throw Away," "A Good Man is Hard to Find"

#AlbumOfTheDay #AOTD #Music #Soundtrack #Horror

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I love Tom Waits. I have all of his albums. I’ve mostly been listening to his 70s output recently but I think it’s time to go back to his more recent albums. Blood Money is very good after all (they all are!).

Album of the Day 9: Day of the Dead OST by John Harrison

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=219WdZYQCPI

I prefer Day of the Dead over Dawn of the Dead, and the same goes for the soundtracks. While Goblin did excellent work for Dawn (as to be expected), John Harrison's work for Day manages to nail the tone of the film: haunting and claustrophobic, yet hopeful.

#AlbumOfTheDay #AOTD #Music #Soundtrack #Horror

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I agree completely! I’ve been saying exactly that for years about the film and the soundtracks.

howrandom, to beer

For a long time I thought that beer from a can always tasted metallic so I’d buy beer in bottles.

A few years ago I spoke to a beer expert and he said beer was actually better in cans and the metallic taste was poor quality beer. He also told me that green bottles can cause the beer to go off if it's stored in bright sunlight (“skunked” is the term apparently).

He was right! I've since had some really great beer from cans and in fact mostly buy beer in cans now if I have a choice.

#Beer

howrandom,

@LadyMarth01 I do too. Beer tastes better out of a glass to me.
