@herr_irrtum@s.basspistol.org

Also known as die nmi! (which stands for "die nicht maskierte irrtum!" but currently I don't like to use this name, as I'm a fan of wearing a mask during a world wide pandemic) I'm active since 1856 in terms of electrifried #music, yes electrifried – that's the term we time travelers use.
In former times also active as The Shock, TDB (the depressive bit) and da nme! (demo scene of the 90s).
Also doing #shortMovies and #shortStories.
Currently hosting a monthly #radioShow in Berlin.
On top of that I'm active in anti surveillance activities.
I know quite a bit about #Linux (using it exclusively private and professional). Am an wandering 80smusic encyclopedia, know all about #8bit computer games and being a #demoScene fanatic.
Luvin' #halfTime bass music.
BTW: The birth date is NOT correct (being a time traveler and all I just put it in to give you a rough idea – think as a service for normal human beings like most of you are).

So 's CEO apparently wrote something starting with

"Today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero…".

🤬. ⬅️ me after spending the whole weekend + Friday night + the days for preparing this weekend... with creating 1 tiny hour of my radio show based on the content of others.

I think to become a well recognized CEO, like Daniel EK or Elon Musk, the most important skill is to be qualified to form braindead stupid sentences and publish them with confidence (I think that's why CEOs like "AI" so much. it's a soul brother).

What is #fedivision? Sounds like it’s related to #Eurovision in some way.

herr_irrtum,

@bearhugger
First of all: This years #Fedivision is over unfortunately.

And indeed it's meant as a kind of ironic answer to Eurovision. This time with real human musicians, not necessarily and like 100% of the time not sponsored by the record industry or battling super producers.
Often but not necessarily be done among amateurs or semi amateurs, always 100% dedicated to their own music. And it's happening here, within the #Fediverse. There is a voting system to find a winner. However anyone taking part is already a recognized as a winner.

The center of the event is the website https://fedivision.party/

That should give you an idea. I'm not associated with the organizers, I'm just one of the participants. I hope I explained this right, else I'd ask @futzle to correct me, or getting more into detail - as she is one of the main figures of this positive movement.

#Fedivision2024: Tracks that stand out (in my opinion) 1/4

I am just a human with an opinion. However I also host a music radio show. I know if a song is good or not, independent of which genre it is.
Of course, I also have my own taste. I.e. I'm not interested in anything trying to cling on mainstream, anything where polish ("production quality") is higher than substance (to be honest, production quality is the last thing that matters to me).
So this is a list which meets this criteria. A lot of good tracks are already left out, because others I did find even better. Maybe, if I would have time to listen again in a reversed order, I may have favored another track then and when.
I'm sorry if you feel you should be included here. You probably are, and I'm to blame. I mean it!
Anyway – this list really deals with a lot of different Genres and is meant as a help for anyone who doesn't have time to listen to all tracks, to anyone who knows how unfair that is (because lots of artists are left out) and to anyone having an "off mainstream" taste.

[RUGG] Grandios Roy Orbison country including a real banjo, if my ears don't deceive me. Rich composition, lots of structure (much more than just an ABAB scheme), text mentions "die nmi!" - my real musician handle (right? RIGHT?) - how couldn't I just love it (!!) ?
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#RUGG
• Artist: @sknob

[UDIL] High production standards (multiband compression to the max, arrrrgh) which makes me skeptical (also Euro Dance style. Really? In 2024?) But damn, there is substance and boy, it grooves. Pretty sure the female singer is a sample, as it always repeats. I was once criticized for using such a sample instead of something original back in the 90s in a competition and that's why I wont complain here. I just... mention this :)
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#UDIL
• Artist link(s): @yours_truly

[MOUL] YEAHhhhh!! Dirty electric Cyber tech(no) with a french vibe. Totally a candidate for my Radio Irrtum! Show! A candidate I said. Nothing is decided yet, but I don't claim this without reason. Moule by the way did also a fantastic review session of a lot of tracks very early on at his fediverse account! Thank you, Moule, you crazy horse (or whatever that animal is)!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#MOUL
• Artist link(s): @MOULE

[Side note:]
When I am looking forward to find out who the female singer of a track is, and then find out it's just an #AI. Then nope. Totally nope. Especially when you are a male musician: Don't abuse my remaining male hormones like this! I hear a beautiful woman, I expect a beautiful woman, not a filthy male with his AI. Screw all this!

1/4

herr_irrtum,

: Tracks that stand out (imo) 2/4

[MIRR] Not like totally blowing anything against the wall but well done with some harmonies reminding me about Joy Division. Anyway: Very well presented folk song with a good male singer, which already makes this over average. Good!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#MIRR
• Artist link(s): @sknob

[CYBE] - Mindless mystery Gabba ftw! I like dat thinking. Probably 70% of the Fediverse is inhabited by >40y men (source: My brain is making this up) - and they will all going to vote for exactly this! Hehe! No shit Sherlock, it's phun!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#CYBE
• Artist link(s): @revengeday

[IPGW] Great. Has a quite mysterious flair. Instruments remind me on 1987 Sisters of Mercy, but 1981 Visage as well. However, this music is way different. And has a sense of a wide landscape - probably because of dat tastefully used echo. Also when my music handle is "die nicht maskierte irrtum!" I enjoy anything having masks as a topic. Surprisingly good track.
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#IPGW
• Artist link(s): @ashnoodle

[ODTH] You can't fool me - this is inspired by the Star Control II (DOS/Amiga) soundtrack ;). Right this one: https://youtu.be/vIi_R1ySOLg . And therefore it's good! You know, I've said "inspired". When I say it's good, it is. Especially with dat killer bass and this mysterious atmosphere which sounds like a flowing shimmering desert in space.
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#ODTH
• Artist link(s): @bittersweetdb

[BINK] !!!!!!!!!!!
I'm soooo in love with this voice. How can anyone withstand this. The warmth. The depth. The smile. The universal love in it. And most of it: The courage. To submit something with nothing else then you voice. It carries all through. Doesn't need anything more. It's that rich. Perfect execution. (Belongs to my personal Top 3)
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#BINK
• Artist link(s): @Langile

[WSAN] Totally experimental. Has this analog tape feel. Totally a candidate for my radio Irrtum show. Nuff said. Just listen – before the space ship beams you up forever.
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#WSAN
• Artist link(s): @ssmigiel

[CMBC] This is my track. Terrible filthy Amiga stuff. Don't vote!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#CBMC
• Artist link(s): @herr_irrtum

[ABLS] A track like an expressionist painting by Otto Dix. With a strong anti war message - just like Otto Dix would have done, if he'd been a singer.. Great track and what a cool cooperation of a bunch of fedizens.
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#ABLS
• Artist link(s): (@mux, @specter, @Brielle)

2/4

herr_irrtum,

: Tracks that stand out (imo) 3/4

[ELAN] That surf bass ❤️. And suddenly. All different! Who needs New Order or OMD now?! Should be rewarded for the most surprising turn during the song.So good! Bernard Sumner isn't around? Just ask for Nick Jennings!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#ELAN
• Artist link(s): @slvrbckt

[THRO] - I usually run away screaming from kitsch medival "feel good" folk. This one is different. Turns out. This isn't really kitsch. Just those guitar lines are gold. The composition itself. Sooo good! Plus: With singers with a nice sounding voice who know how to sing. Underestimated thing that can make all the difference. Vikings would have profited from this.
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#THRO
• Artist link(s): @brindy

[CEPH] This code alone makes a lot of sense (in an IT environment full of Linux) but umm... this track has nothing to do with that: It's a bone dry rock track with rapped words as if Run DMC meet the early Beastie Boys again. Well done!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#CEPH
• Artist link(s): @Lioh

[BLAH] - Chiptune with modern FX + synths/samples (personally I try to avoid that and leave em dry). Anyway: This track is totally on FIRE!!! I'm drop dead serious! FIRE! Also gender changing substances for all! Can't not luv it!!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#BLAH
• Artist link(s): @fabi

[EATW]: Very sad but kinda rocky track with a female singer. Strong. Moving. Good!
• Track link: https://fedivision.party/#EATW
• Artist link(s): @whoosh

Side Note
Good Harsh Noise Tracks are abstract and still have a structure. Applying distortion to an average track isn't enough for Sonar fans like me ;)

[RAIL] Disclaimer. I'm on good terms with Stephan and respect him as a human, his music, and his role in the CC movement a lot. However that doesn't cloud my opinion. If I don't like the music of a friend, I'm brutally honest about it. Already lost friends because of this habit. Now about the track:
Super well executed super rich material (what a unbelievable composition this is, what a huge arrangement). It's Schall und Stille and friends. Didn't expect anything less... but still. I'm super moved by this huge positive impact this has on me. I mean, there is a CELLO in it! Just because of that (but there is soooo much more): Instant luv!! By far, I mean it, by far the best track in all departments in the whole competition (well, DEEZ comes close). Which is perhaps the problem with that track. It sounds just too damn well (because it is). Congrats, Stephan, MyLoFy and Tobias.

Yeahhh!

My entry was finally accepted by the Mod Archive (serious human screening process) and can now be witnessed in its original Amiga MOD form (or you download the ADF Amiga Disk Image from my homepage - see pinned note on my profile).

Thank you, human from the MOD archive.

Here is the direct link:

But think twice before you vote for me (as PAULAnder von Liebhertz) at Fedivision2024 which would be code CBMC (think Commodore Business Machines Class) – because a lot of other entries are ACE as well!

rulez!

herr_irrtum, to amiga

I want this years , the to stand in the blazing light of the Commodore computer. That's why I've created my entry the way I did:

It simply shows what POWA the Amiga still has. Right now. In 2024. The Power to DOMINATE 'em all. While voting for PAULAnder von Liebhertz (CBMC) you basically vote AMIGA. Because the Amiga started it all:

The Graphics. The Music. The coding. The Creativity. For everyone. Because everyone could afford it. Amiga was Punk. Amiga was 1337. Even Andy Warhol couldn't resist those charms. Did I say "it was"? It is! It's strong; it's alive, it's kicking. Better than ever. Better than the rest.

And let me tell you one thing: No matter how our future will be: There will always be an Amiga. There is no future without an Amiga. That's why: Vote for the "CBM class moon of da meditating Amigas". Vote CBMC. Because Amiga. Because it's more than just a friend. Amiga is life! Our life!

Thank you all!
Yours PAULAnder von Liebhertz aka die nmi! aka Herr Irrtum!

And there are greetings! Of course!
Greetings go to all those who inspired me, helped me, offered help: Like @ne7, @harrysintonen, @shred, @pndc, @GabeMoralesVR – just to name a few. Basically to all those, who keep a friendly Amiga spirit alive within the mighty Fediverse.

And some more stats: This was the first time I did a true (mainly single cycle) chip tune since 1996. And my first Mod since 1992 (back then, behold, with MODEdit v2.00).

Not good. It's also kind of proof to my theory, that super large instances are unhealthy for the Fediverse.

Anyway, good luck to @stux and his team to get this sorted out.

Hello crowd brain.

I'd like to publish a mod file on a adf disc image for fun.
My search engine queries didn't bring much usable up.

I'd like it to be a self-booting adf disc image that automatically starts a minimal mod player (ideally not bigger than 50kb) running my mod.

So I need know-how in

  • (preparing a) bootable disc
  • kinda start script
  • mod player that runs a mod from command line
  • (or something that converts my mod into an executable that I can autostart)

I'm a Linux sys admin by profession, so I hope I'd understand some basic stuff on the Amiga ;) - on the other hand I have no experience with it. Kickstart 3.x and 1.3 roms and corresponding Workbenchs I have (emulated).

Any help / hints / links to tutorials would help a lot. Anything specific to the point would be a bless. Thank you!

herr_irrtum, to YouTubeMusic

Haha, #YouTubeMusic (my "#Spotify" service) did send me a "recap" – so basically a breakdown about what type of a music consumer I am... and it's hilarious!

Apparently Googles all seeing eye err... algorithm knows it all. No doubt possible.

They say the music style I like the most is... lightweight JAZZ!! Hahaha, no really. If they say that! And my favorite musician is consequentially... Gary Burton (vibraphone maestro). Hihihi...

Now, nothing against jazz, nothing against Gary. But who would know, they are my favorites? I mean, that's news to me!

And it couldn't be more wrong!

I know how this came to be though. Story time:

I had a friend coming over. I cooked for her and also prepared for a good acoustical mood in my living room. She plays saxophone and flute in various orchestras in her spare time but likes strange indie music as The Frogs (yes!), so for my "acoustic mood preparation" I wanted A) surprise her by selecting unusual stuff, but B) something classy as well plus C) something that isn't distracting... so I've assembled a large 60s Vibraphone jazz playlist. And that took time, and I did testplay this multiple times until it felt right before that evening came, where it was played again.

And that was apparently enough for Google to know about my listening habits. It has nothing to do with what I usually listen to and also shows that I spend the major part of my music time not on YouTube music but on Bandcamp and/or local "on device" music using other player apps.

Sigh...

Linux Elitism...Again - Kev Quirk:
https://kevquirk.com/linux-elitism-again

This behaviour is shameful! Flooding a request for empathy with pushback. This is no way to promote software freedom, it rightly turns people off!

Some people (not me) have had a bad experience with "Linux", we must respect that.

herr_irrtum,

@alcinnz

I did read the whole Kev Quirk text. In the end he is mentioning that he has removed Linux from all his machines in favor of Win, because – and there is a link to another article to explain it – Linux is a "waste of time".
When reading the other article "A Sombre Goodbye To Linux" (from 2021!) he describes that after >10 years of using Linux he has enough. His arguments:

  • Kubuntu runs on all devices
  • Inkscape (GTK!): Ugly theme
  • Firefox crashes often (remember, Ubuntu --> SNAP)
  • he gives an example where he quickly had to install an app I've never heard of and uses snap for this which isn't working so he uses an appimage of the same obscure software but he needs an "AppImage launcher" (what, Ubuntu devs?!) here
  • under Win: Install exe, 1min, done
  • conclusion: Install Win everywhere

I can only shake my head by the masses of misconception going on here (since 11 y at the point of writing). Maybe he is bitter that he was "wasting his time" on Linux for 11y and now is actively looking for evil Linux people telling Win users to quit just to showcase them.

Don't get me wrong: The argument from his original post itself "it doesn't help when Linux users tell Windows users to quit Windows in a cynical way" is totally valid. If you feel the urge to tell this someone, do it in a CONSTRUCTIVE WAY! Ask friendly questions of why it is so. Don't push this person.

Back to that second "I think Linux is a waste of time" article. I think he never got how to use Linux in a sane way.
I think he was pushed to Linux by the same people he now criticizes because after 11 years he still uses it like Windows. Which obviously doesn't work.

First of, he talks about Linux but he is using a Ubuntu flavor (Kubuntu) which comes from a company that refuses to use the word "Linux" everywhere on their web presence. He seems to genuinely believe that SNAP is part of the Linux ecosystem. NO! It's part of non working Ubuntu only b******t. Yes Ubuntu, that's entirely your fault forcing Snap down your users throats. He could have asked someone (me?). But he thought he understands Linux (11 years usage like Windows), so that didn't occur to him.
Another misconception (not his fault): While KDE is very cool, it needs a separate GTK theme (and notice, GTK2 is not GTK3/4). I think that's something not working right in 2021-Kubuntu (thanks again Ubuntu). And it also has something to do eventually with upgrading Ubuntu to the next version without checking user .dot files after updating.

Anyway. Here's some advice to get NOT frustrated with Linux, like Kev Quirk:

  • don't use it like Windows. If a program isn't on your distros repositories, think hard if you really need it. If yes, be aware that it could break your system
  • Avoid Snap (it may mean to abandon Ubuntu)
  • Theming: Remember: GTK2, GTK3/4, KDE, QT Apps need a separate (!) theme setup
  • To check for wrong user .dot files. create a dummy account and check if things work there

I think when someone has more than 1000 followers it's starting to get hard to try to follow an equal amount of people. The Fediverse wouldn't be usable anymore as you would drown in information. And the one information you'd really care about would be drown with you.

I've never seen a consistent hashtag here used by Fedi musical artists when posting original material / promoting themselves. Is there one i'm missing?

The tag gets used for everything including someone just posting a favorite song from YouTube or whatever.

Other art disciplines have their tags that indicate "original poster" here.

Feels useful for discovery. Should be unique, indicate original music, clever and memorable, work fedi wide

people, what do you think?

herr_irrtum,

@limebar

As @sean suggested a poll may make sense. Before that we should collect some options. There is... (I make a space between hash tag and topic to avoid unnecessary attention right now):

  • musicProduction (too long to type)?

  • musicProd (I'd vote for that)

  • myMusic (my great idea)

  • myArt (more generic)

  • freshMusic (seen in the discussions but doesn't indicate that this is YOUR work well enough imho)

What else?

Btw. I don't think, combined hash tags make much sense because they are hard to filter (I might be wrong though).

Tim Follin on writing chip music for games in the 80s:

herr_irrtum,

@dosnostalgic
This is positively insane!! Also the small gap between the hardware (thinking in cycles!) and the music is striking. Often back then, game musicians were programmers as well, writing their sound playing routines in assembler by themselves.
I'm not a huge fan of Tims work but some of his later C64 tracks (like Gauntlet 3) are pure gold nevertheless.

Here is his Qix soundtrack on the C64 from 1989.

https://yewtu.be/watch?v=ki_9rsCJ-HU

(I think he used a tracker style music editor for this - it's way better than his music from 2 years earlier)

He did also some remarkable tracks on the NES which stand out alone for trying to exploit it's chip to the max and being less "infantile" and more groovy than most Japanese soundtracks (Konami soundtracks being a noticable exception). Silver Surfer is one of those games.

herr_irrtum,

@dosnostalgic

Hmm - the only Qix source named as such is in Z80 assembler. That is not the SID version.

Apparently he used "Software Creations Music Driver" by Stephen Ruddy since 1987 (also on the NES). See this page

The "Player"-tab has got the information we seek.

Also shown in this YT video:

herr_irrtum,

@dosnostalgic
just wanted to add that nothing from the original post is wrong. Pitch (in hex) as it looks, length, synth parameters, that's what he is doing there!
But there it is, straight from the source! Cool!!

Well, back then, in 1995, I was not "the nmi!" I was "da nme!" and under that handle I was part of a demo crew called "YLYSY" which didn't release shit. Lazy coders, lazy graphicans, only me, the musician did stuff, lots of stuff, but it never got released, I never got "scene-fame" :(
Damn you, YLYSY!!
As a decent scene guy I had a (Gravis Ultrasound - the very first soundcard like a sampler with its own RAM for samples), and I primary used Tritons Fasttracker II for tracking. There was a kind of friendly war between musicians back then: IT (Impulsetracker - spiritual successor of Scream Tracker Luka used) or FT2 (Fast Tracker II). BTW, I've used Screamtracker as well, but for Adlib FM music (this wasn't covered by IT or FT)!
Anyway, stuff had to fit into the GUSes sample ram, and this was 512KB in my case (later I've upgraded to whopping 1MB) – so there I had to make compromises to fit stuff into those 512KB, mainly by sampling samples down to 22KHz or/and converting from 16Bit to 8Bit.

The track you're about to hear is called "Hallways" and was done in 1995 (when I was 22y). There is a Beastie Boys loop in it I back then didn't realize it's a Beastie Boys loop because I've recorded it to tape from radio during a show where no one said what was played. I honestly thought it's totally underground ;) .
The other feature in this song was this: I had found a sample editor which could do Reverb! REVERB!! I didn't had the money for real gear, but this sample editor could add Reverb to whatever sample I fed in, and after only a couple of minutes (yes minutes) calculating... it was there!!! Because of sample ram limitations again, I had to use loop points to loop the reverbed sample parts in Fast Tracker :)

Anyway, enjoy my former self:

I always get strange looks like "Are you stupid or what?!" when I say, the best video game ever is...

FINAL FANTASY VI (or III in the US).

And I would never guess, who is going to back up me on this:

The Angry Video Game Nerd.

At first I was skeptical, almost frightened: Will he destroy my favorite game in his usual super cynical ways?
Well, he didn't. He did in fact such a good praise, I couldn't do better. IN ALL ASPECTS!
I truly have never seen a more fair and all things covering homage to that OUTSTANDING game.
The opera scene is there. The suicide scene (which almost made me quit the game) is there. Everything that matters is there. But still no real spoilers. There is even praise for that other HUGE SNES game out there – Chrono Trigger – which btw. originally was meant to be the successor of Final Fantasy VI (which was Final Fantasy III in the US - yes I mentioned it, but not that this happened because Nintendo US was stupid, and this in so many ways).

And say what you want about the AVGN , this is damn well done, even if you don't agree.

And if you aren't familiar with the old™ Final Fantasy franchise – here are my "must play" recommendations (in order of "well doneness"):

  • Final Fantasy VI (III in the US, did I mention this?) / SNES
  • Final Fantasy VII / PS1
  • Final Fantasy IX / PS1
  • Final Fantasy X / PS2
  • Final Fantasy V / SNES
  • Final Fantasy XII / PS2

Everything after XII, even the FFVII remake sucks. Stay away!

And because it was on the way to become Final Fantasy:

  • Chrono Trigger
(it didn't because [one reason] the game mechanics are way too different)

I have two links for you: The original Youtube and an Invidious instance (sometimes those instances fail, but I'd recommend it anyway, because it is not Google):

PS: Yes, I know, there where some "enhanced" reeditions on the PS1 and other consoles, sometimes with stupid 3d remodeling. But they left out the strippers in the remake. Yes the strippers. Don't get a victim of censorship. Don't fall for the stupid anime movies added later. Go for the SNES original!
