Oh also, so why didn't anyone tell me doing jigsaw puzzles is immensely satisfying and relaxing!

henrik,

@johnl Yess!! Our favourite so far is https://amzn.eu/d/5svxsMG - nothing else has measured up. And how could it?

We will also try to find a soundtrack for each one that we play on repeat for ambiance.

I tried the #Obsidian Templater plugin (https://github.com/SilentVoid13/Templater, not to be confused with Templates) and it feels a bit scary – powerful and low in abstraction.

I used it to make a command to first prompt me for a date, then for a title, then create a meeting note in the right folder with the right name.

https://forum.obsidian.md/t/good-way-to-quickly-create-date-stamped-note-in-meetings-folder-for-any-date/76591

(The UI and code are currently in a rough state of just having been cobbled together.)

Screenshot of an Obsidian prompt asking for “Meeting name”, with the filled-in value “Gremlins 2 brainstorm”.
Screenshot of Obsidian showing a meeting in “Auctionet/Meetings/2024-02-09 Gremlins 2 brainstorm” and with headings filled in via template: Participants, Discussion, Actions.

OMG, just learned the Calendar plugin works in iOS #Obsidian. I thought it didn’t.

If it’s in your right-hand sidebar, you can slide in from the side to show it, then click the title of whatever’s there to switch to Calendar if not already open.

This changes everything - opening Daily Notes for other days (e.g. tomorrow) has been a pain on mobile.

henrik,

@dhry I never realised the right-side sidebar existed in the app, and I couldn’t find anything like “show calendar” in the command palette.

Looking at it again now that I know, I can’t find any affordances. The left sidebar has an icon. Long-pressing it does nothing (not that I tried until now). The “…” menu on the right has no option to show it, nor does the hamburger menu.

We talked about the Icelandic word for “computer” at work (“tölva”, a portmanteau for something like “number witch” or “prophetess of numbers”) and I’m curious if there is one for LLMs!

I asked a LLM and it suggested “málfræðitroll” which supposedly means “linguistics troll” 👌

henrik,

@Hlini I guess that’s where “prophetess of numbers” comes in :) “Oracle” sounds great also!

The update is out!
But one question: does it really make sense to save position on hashtags timeline?

henrik,

@IceCubesApp It probably depends™. Assuming you mean the timeline for a single hashtag? I follow some where it’s easy to keep up and then I try to. I could see following others that are busy enough that you just dip in.

Wondering if anyone else on #macOS is seeing this same error post 14.2.1 update:

I used to open Mail.app via a message:// call (which is how you open a specific message but just without a UUID).

Seems to have broken for me. Anyone else?

henrik,

@ethanschoonover I see the same error on 14.1.1.

Does “open -a Mail” achieve the same goal for you or is there some interesting nuance?

One of the best things I added to our den was this electronic display for family favorite movie posters

A man swipes in front of a poster sized display on the wall, changing displayed movie posters

henrik,

@ethanschoonover @alpha Does it feel like a screen in a frame or does it read more like a physical picture?

stemps, to Podcasts

Sad to see the iOS podcast app Castro die. Their mental model and features 100% clicked with me and all other podcast apps now feel broken to me

#castro #podcasts

henrik,

@stemps Same. I clicked through Overcast and was more confused than I’ve been by an app UI in a long time. I think a lot of that was my brain insisting on a Castro-like model.

henrik,

@dharrison @stemps Thanks! It took me embarrassingly long just to find a list of episodes for a podcast. I think it was the fact that the same screen had two lists of cover art where one was episodes and the other turned out to be podcasts. I assumed they were both lists of episodes. (cc @overcastfm)

henrik,

@dharrison @stemps Yeah, I saw Overcast, Apple Podcasts and Pocket Casts all seem to have an end of episode sleep timer which Castro doesn’t have. I do like that.

I also really like how Pocket Casts handles sliding the player window for details. The little “tab bar” at the top is a nice affordance. Never loved that part of Castro.

henrik, to random

Looks like the #Castro podcast player is officially dead: https://podnews.net/update/castro-to-close

Is there anything with a similar model of podcast inbox + queue? I’m spoiled by its perfect interaction flow.

I wrote about the experience of building a custom GPT (in my case, a copy editor) and how OpenAI is paving a path toward powerful AI agents, for better and for worse https://www.platformer.news/p/how-openai-is-building-a-path-toward

henrik,

@caseynewton I’m almost wondering if I was served this ad by a supervillain AI recognising that my nostalgic brain would halfway misparse it as the cover for Enya’s “The Memory of Trees”. Caught my attention in an uncomfortable way.

Oh, hmm. #Obsidian supports nested tags. That could be helpful at work - #2024/q1/notes ...... I dunno. Something like that.

henrik,

@kboyd I’ve started doing #people/somename for meeting attendees, after seeing a coworker doing the same. No idea yet if it will be useful for anything.

Are all search engines bad now because they have all been SEO'd to death and it's impossible for the people making them to fix it or what? I would kill for a search engine that returned good results.

henrik,

@gruber @marcoarment @collin Trying it out now! A bit discouraged by my first search having a visual bug plus not adapting prices or Amazon region to my selected region (UK). Is it very US centric?

If you have access to GPT with images, you can use it to learn what Instagram/Meta probably know about you from the photos you upload. Some prompts:

  1. Describe this photo in as much detail as possible
  2. Describe the background of this photo in as much detail as possible
  3. What brands do you see in this photo
  4. Is this photo taken indoors or outdoors?
henrik,

@joeldrapper This reads like a text-based adventure game. Perhaps you could take a bunch of photos and then move around a text-based representation of your house. Is it clever enough to connect up rooms?

I’m still on the fence, are you getting a new phone this year?

henrik,

@rafa Have the gold 12 Pro and I would miss the gold! Even though I always keep it in a case. The yellow non-pro does look nice. Not a fan of the brushed steel look.

USB-C and a fresh battery would be nice but probably not strong enough reasons.

  • henrik,

@jamwil @kate I think they framed it as replacing them with fabric alternatives - didn’t see any pleather except for one of the fancier Hermès ones being plastic/rubber.

    henrik,

@jamwil @kate Yeah, just realised the same when looking into the “FineWoven” cases which are described as “durable microtwill” and “made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content” but doesn’t seem to specify the material.

    https://www.macrumors.com/2023/09/12/exclusive-first-look-finewoven-apple-watch-band/ says nylon and polyester.

We still have plenty of unusual and downright unpleasant Swedish sweets we brought back from holiday. We give them to friends and laugh as they frown and squirm while eating them. I fear that we'll run out of friends before we run out of sweets though. #sweden #sweets #candy

    henrik,

@johnl Did you have Djungelvrål? It’s the most succinct expression of internationally unviable Swedish sweets. (Also, if you’re ever down Todmorden way I’ll happily take these off your hands!)

    henrik,

@johnl Pick and mix every night 😁 Living the dream. And thank you!
