Writing about cycling and its place in a green future world since the 1990s. See my blog and other writings elsewhere.

I also run a webshop which provides parts which are sometimes hard to find for practical everyday bicycles. If you can find parts locally then support your local cycle shop. Otherwise perhaps I can provide you with parts that you can't find locally.

321 ppm. That was a long time ago.

Today's parcels on their way to the post office.
I took a slight detour through a park to cycle in the shadow of some trees, but on the way I spotted these pigs who preferred to bath in the sun.
Anyway, today ten customers were sent email notifications and they'll receive their bike parts in a few days.

A view of the pigs enjoying sun-bathing. They have shelter and water, but they're just lying there absorbing the rays.

Other photos from last week.
I had more cumbersome parcels to send, and then I had to pick up some wood from a DIY store at the other end of the city.

The same bike loaded with wood. I've got a sheet 1.2 m long on one side and some 2.7 m long rods which poke out well past the back even of this longer than average bike.

Here's a new comment on a nine year old article of mine about Southend-on-Sea in the UK:

"Its nearly 9 years now since your article and yet nearly all your comments remain as relevant as if you had visited last week. However bad the initial schemes may or may not be, the town, now a city, has done absolutely nothing to develop cycling over the last decade. No problems have been sorted, no junctions improved, no changes to the permeability of cycling in the pedestrian areas. In addition one of the effects of Covid has been a collapse in the service levels of the already poor and overpriced public transport offering. All in all Southend will remain a clogged up car based place for many years, probably decades, to come yet. No politicians are trying to do anything useful to reduce car dependency in the town. The waffle and websites will continue to "encourage" cycling and public transport use, but nothing real will ever be provided. I fear UK is slipping further and further behind best practice despite all the hightened modern concerns about global warming, safety and land use that makes the most out of the town. What a waste!"

Photos are from the original article which can be read here:

A supposed "shared space" in Southend. They may have installed fancy paving slabs but this is actually just yet another road dominated by cars. The only cyclist visible is in the middle of what would normally be called the sidewalk/pavement, thereby avoiding the danger posed by the many cars on the road.
Another cyclist crossing the road like a pedestrian and continuing on the pavement. An electric car is being charged for free. Just like other governments around the world, Southend provides perks for motorists rich enough to afford a new electric car to continue to drive even though electric cars most certainly are not a climate solution. Meanwhile, cycling is made impossible for most people because of the conditions, primarily because there are so many cars, and walking is similarly made extremely unpleasant. Note the woman carrying a baby from one side of a wide road to another.
A sign which reads "warning, pedestrian accident area" with a picture of a car sending a pedestrian flying. The danger of cars is omnipresent, but they're doing nothing about it beyond erecting signs which tell pedestrians to scramble out of the way.

@enobacon It'd be more fitting, so perhaps they have. My photo is from nine years ago...

Last day of #school. The kid's biking all the way home on her own for the first time.

We've been practicing for this day for weeks. She knows the rules, knows how to handle her bike, knows to look out for drivers because they're not looking out for her.

We can do this.

If you are out on the roads this afternoon, PLEASE keep your eyes peeled for happy kids about to embark on the best summer of their lives.

TV review: I'd like to recommend "The Days" on Netflix.
This gripping Japanese drama about Fukushima illustrates wonderfully how nuclear power stations have the potential to make just about any other natural disaster more disastrous.
Meanwhile we can watch in real time how the threat of damage to a nuclear power station can be used in war.

    @HannahCelsius I sell bike parts, not art, but I get that as well. Luckily they're pretty easy to spot. Genuine enquiries are not the same at all.

    hembrow,
    @hembrow@todon.eu avatar

    @HannahCelsius I used to sell my own work and I've had all of that as well. For several years my income came entirely from following my family trade of basketmaking. As well as the above there was the regular and usually worthless offer of exposure as payment - in particular the expectation of others that you just couldn't wait to put on a display for them free of charge and completely at your own cost, for "exposure".

    It's still entirely weird that Apple, or any company, should block me from installing whatever software I want on a computer I own. Every now and that I realise just how profoundly odd that is.

    hembrow,
    @hembrow@todon.eu avatar

    @ianbetteridge
    You're complaining, but it's also what you deliberately bought into. Apple wants to control it's customers. Many of us don't use their products because of this.
    You're encouraging Apple to mistreat it's customers, including you, by giving them your money. The simple way around this is to stop buying their products. That will also mean there is one fewer person on Mastodon writing messages complaining about getting precisely what they wanted...

    O haha omg. Heb helaas geen screenshot van, maar zeer kort geleden kreeg ik een email van Jumbo (waar ik mijn online BS doe) met een hoera verhaal over dat ik een gratis? ticket of iets Formule-1erigs kreeg.

    En de vraag om de mail te beoordelen, dus deed ik dat, en gaf aan dat ik geen prijs stel op dit soort acties, en dat het steunen van klimaatvijandige bezigheden niet meer van deze tijd is. En dat ze hun personeel beter moeten betalen (had er niets mee te maken, maar ik dacht: nu ik toch de aandacht heb...).

    En dan nu dit:

    Jumbo stopt met sponsoring Verstappen en Formule 1.

    (okee, de redenering die ze geven is niet die van mij, maar wie weet hoeveel mensen geklaagd hebben - maar dat ze bang zijn andere klanten te verliezen als ze dat openlijk toegeven?)

    @HannahCelsius Mooi. Er waren twee redenen dat ik niet meer bij de Jumbo mijn boodschappen deed. Ene was de F1. De andere was direct stoppen van antizuivelreclame doordat een trekkerterrorist een klant ingediend.

    @HannahCelsius je hebt gelijk. Het is een beetje als kiezen tussen olie bedrijven.

    Tell me how to fix this if you all feel you need to go to places.

    #ClimateCrisis

    hembrow,
    @hembrow@todon.eu avatar

    @HannahCelsius We have to not want to go to places.
    Switching from one mode to another doesn't help very much (certainly not nearly as much as those who sell train travel claim!), and for longer distances it's not really practical anyway.

    hembrow,
    @hembrow@todon.eu avatar

    @HannahCelsius Indeed. I was a bit hopeful for a while that people would realise that we'd accidentally created a nicer world in 2020 and perhaps they'd want to hang onto it, but that's not how it worked out...

    HannahCelsius, to photography

    So it took 3 hrs walking to get my electrical and iron garbage to the 'garbage point' (afvalpunt), because people without cars or bikes don't seem to exist.

    BUT i could take some phototooototots! (sorry to tired to type and think or first think and then type).
    The afvalpunt is very far, at the Toetsenbordweg (Keyboardroad, yes). Fun part of the names in this district: 'weg' means road but also 'gone' So: Keyboard gone. So now we know why they put the afvalpunt there.

    It is a large industrial area near the harbors of Amsterdam, with huge buildings of all sorts, i like to wander there, although you always must be aware of all the trucks and vans that don't expect people there.

    #Amsterdam #AmsterdamNoord #architecture #photography #industry

    hembrow,
    @hembrow@todon.eu avatar

    @HannahCelsius Time consuming, but at least you had a bit of an adventure...

    FWIW, the closest place for us to take metal waste isn't the municipal afvalpunt but a box outside a local woonwagenkamp. Someone there collects metal and takes it for recycling in order to earn money, which is fine by me. You may have someone nearby who does the same thing.
