Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus

— Yeah, right.

I am looking forward to my Raspberry Pi 7 which will arrive with Windows 11 pre-installed, cost a mere £25, and use the bottom 25% of the desktop for streaming ads (while snooping on my every keystroke). Because this is how enshittification proceeds …

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/raspberry-pi-is-preparing-for-an-ipo-in-london-for-likely-more-than-500m/

gozzy,

@aral @cstross Yeah, I'm seriously wondering about my future as a CoderDojo volunteer if this happens. One of our team works for the RPi foundation though so I'll dig into it with them when I see them next.

Fellow #ADHD folks who have a formal diagnosis:

When you received your diagnosis, was it a massive anticlimax?

I ask, because my kid got his yesterday and told me that it felt underwhelming, and I distinctly remember feeling the same way when receiving my own, four years ago.

There wasn’t this great moment of relief, just a calm, almost bored psychiatrist saying “Yes, it sounds like ADHD. Let’s try you on this medication and see how you get on”

gozzy,

@DJDarren Got mine at 50. I'd spent most of my life believing I was useless because everyone else seemed to deal with things that I often find difficult or impossible. I didn't believe my diagnosis at first, thinking somehow I had tricked the psychiatrist. But it has since changed my life, giving me insight I lacked for so long. (Meds help too!)

In our new place and I’m looking forward to finally getting back to working on the Small Web¹ with Kitten², Domain³, and Place⁴.

Only a few bits left to implement in all three before there is a minimum working implementation that others can also easily deploy and play with.

And, hopefully, with the launch of our own Domain instance at small-web.org in 2024, Small Technology Foundation⁵ can start down the road of becoming sustainable (or at least covering our mortage payments) eventually.

gozzy,

@aral Congratulations on your new place and good luck for 2024.

I’m sure the #PHP Foundation would love to receive a $1 million donation. Just saying. https://toot.yosh.is/@yosh/111342430247401011

gozzy,

@mwop Me too. Pure snobbery. For a language that powers ~80% of the web you would think the funding and support would be better.

On 8th Oct 1952 the worst civilian rail disaster in UK history happened in London. 112 would die. 340 would be injured.

That accident, and the actions of one woman from Florida have saved THOUSANDS of lives since.

Because that disaster would help lead to the creation of paramedics. /1 🧵

gozzy,

@garius Thank you for the awesome thread and shining a light on both a critical historical moment and the key person who made it happen.

@ZachWeinersmith Parmesan cheese. That dried abomination in tubs that smells like decaying feet will do that.

Renewed my motorhome insurance last night. Quotes ranged from £360 a year to over £1,200. Why is the price range so wide? I get that some policies have slightly better features but these are mostly like-for-like quotes. Seems odd.

gozzy,

@pwaring Ah, cool, thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I think the cheapest quote, which I didn't go with, was one of the "market share" ones given there were two distinct prcicing groups at £600 to £800 and £1,000 to £1,200 .

The UK's online safety bill is looking like the online version of Brexit, separating Britain from the rest of the internet: https://www.regulate.tech/online-safety-bill-some-futures-25th-july-2023/

gozzy,

@jeffjarvis As a Brit who works in tech it is a major concern. The government seem hell bent on pushing this through despite everyone telling them it is dangerous. They simply won't listen. Utter madness.

This morning I received spam from a mortgage broker to a personal email address. They have never asked me for permission to email so I wanted to report them to the email provider they are using.
Step 1: Who is it? To find out I had to take the links in the email, do a WHOIS to find out the owner (obfuscated, of course!), then trace that to another domain which finally led me to Campaign Monitor.
1/

gozzy,

@outofcontrol Ooh! Handy, thanks. What I'm intrigued to know now is how they got my email address.

gozzy,

@outofcontrol That's definitely the case for general spam (of which I get plenty in my spam box), but this is a UK business who are bound by UK data protection law. I think a lot of them get away with dodgy practices.

No extension for 8.2 on Windows which puts a crimp in my plans to only run 8.2 on my new dev machine. If PHP is supported on Windows why are the PECL extensions such a mess? Bah!

gozzy,

@ramsey Damn! Thanks for responding, I wasn't aware. That's a real shame. I guess I either need to take the plunge and move my dev setup to Linux or start working out how to install the tool chain to build extensions...

gozzy,

@shochdoerfer Yes, and it's where I'm likely to go providing I can keep my source accessible to both Windows and WSL.

What is a #CID?

It’s some kind of identifier that AT Protocol appears to use, but I can’t find a definitive resource on what it is or how it’s defined, and it appears to be related somehow to cryptocurrency (maybe?).

To make matters worse, there doesn’t appear to be any #PHP libraries that will parse or create CIDs.

There’s this one, but it doesn’t appear to support all CID codecs (not sure I understand that correctly)? https://github.com/danny50610/php-cid

gozzy,

@ramsey The only reference I can find to it in the documentation is here: https://atproto.com/guides/applications. Looks like it's a sha256 of content used to track whether something has been edited.

gozzy,

@ramsey Ah, my apologies, yes I got suckered into believeing the docs rather than checking the code. On second look the documentation for the AT protocol seems really poor.

I notice there is an archived PHP library at https://github.com/multiformats/php-multihash. Without clear documentation I'm not sure how one would go about recreating the code in PHP.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

If you design anything for the #web this is your regular reminder that Responsive Design and Feature Detection allow you to support any device. You do not need separate "mobile" and "desktop" sites in 2023, nor do you need to dictate which browser one of your customers should use, nor should you require #JavaScript. #HTML #CSS

Resisting the urge to undertake a massive rewrite or refactor of an existing codebase that has been quietly working for years. I only need to make the changes necessary to work with the latest version of #PHP. I have to keep reminding myself that rewriting everything is unnecessary. #dev
