it's jan 1st 2007 and you're booting up your mac to load netscape navigator and go to mojeek dot com ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

gbxyz,

@Mojeek no one was using Netscape in 2007! They might have been using Firefox, but more probably IE

๐Ÿ†• blog! โ€œMinority Governments and the Boundary Commissionโ€

The UK is almost certain to have a General Election this year1. The Boundary Commission for England2 has reworked the existing Parliamentary constituencies to make them more fair3. As such, constituencies are generally more equal in terms of electorate. But, of course, geography trumps gโ€ฆ

gbxyz,

@Edent interesting post, but I think you are mistaken about the latest possible date of the election. The last one was on 2019-12-12, so the latest the next one can be held is 2024-12-12. January 2025 is too late.

gbxyz,

although Wikipedia says the last day is 2025-01-18 so now Iโ€™m not sure...

I made something quite cool (IMHO) over the weekend: a 100% client-side search engine for static websites:

https://github.com/gbxyz/webidx

You run a script to generate an database with an index of all the files, publish it, and then embed some which uses sql.js to query the contents of the database and display search results.

Perfect if you use , , etc

Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web and Vint Cerf invented the Internet. Some people often talk about one but mean the other.

They once wore custom-made t-shirts to help identify which invention was theirs!

gbxyz,

@w3c what I've always loved about this photo is the wording of the T shirts: Vint is not the sort of person who uses contractions...

I am starting to think that needs a feature where modules can be tagged as possibly abandoned.

If the git repo has disappeared, or if nobody has been able to contact the author for a long time, then it's worth noting somewhere.

gbxyz,

@rrwo I've been trying to get hold of the developer of a specific module for years, the module is obviously abandoned, and I would be happy to adopt it, but there's no way to do that that I know of

gbxyz, to datascience

hackers, I find myself repeating myself over and over again when I write code that pulls data from various locations online, and then parses it:

  1. generate local filename based on the URL
  2. check if the file exists and is younger than some TTL
  3. request the URL and write its content to the local file
  4. parse the contents of the file, whether JSON, YAML, XML, CSV, whatever

Am I blind or is there something on that does all this for me? If not I will write it!

I just wrote a script to use GraphViz to visualise the dependencies of one of my composer-based #PHP projects, and now Iโ€™m wishing I hadn't #sbom #nightmare

gbxyz,

(scream emoji)

gbxyz,

to be fair, this includes loads of development dependencies like , etc. But even with those omitted, the graph is far larger than the handful of dependencies in composer.json would suggest.

There's now a mailing list for those interested in the new Registry System Testing system that is building for the next round of gTLDs: https://mm.icann.org/mailman/listinfo/subpro-irt-rst

I'll be talking about the new system (fully automated, API driven, machine readable test plans and open source code) on an upcoming call of the SubPro[1] IRT[2]: https://mm.icann.org/pipermail/subpro-irt-rst/2023-November/000000.html

We need subject matter experts on , , , and to review our work and make it better!

It's annoying that there appears to be no way to know the uncompressed length of a compressed file without decompressing it and counting bytes ๐Ÿ˜

gbxyz,

@bert_hubert it seems like an obvious mistake to me!

gbxyz,

@bert_hubert if it does I don't think any of the standard tools or libraries supports it.

I wrote about the man you've probably never heard of, who arguably has caused more deaths than Stalin, Mao, or Hitler -- and the astonishing hypothesis that helps explain why crime rates spiked globally so much during the second half of the 20th century, before plummeting inexplicably in the 1990s. https://www.forkingpaths.co/p/did-leaded-gasoline-cause-a-huge

gbxyz,

@brianklaas I was reading about tetraethyl lead a few days ago and came across Robert A. Kehoe who seems far more despicable than Midgley https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_A._Kehoe
