This is an amazing summary – if you can call a 3hr podcast episode that – of ‘our current predicament’ as a global society:

“Moving from naive to authentic progress: a vision for betterment”
https://pca.st/episode/2e9927b8-e282-41aa-9fb5-1c278ff07ed0

> [in which we] unpack a new paper entitled Development in Progress, an analysis on the history of progress and the consequences of ‘advancement’.

Slightly more digestible by watching/reading this first: https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/animations

Current mainstream narratives sell the story that progress is synonymous with betterment, and that the world becomes better for everyone as GDP and economies continue to grow.

Yet, this is an incomplete portrayal that leaves out the dark sides of advancement.

What are the implications when only the victors of history write the narratives of progress and define societal values?

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

What are the value systems embedded in our institutions and policies, and how do they reinforce the need for ongoing growth at the expense of the natural world and human well-being?

Finally, how do we change these dynamics to form a new, holistic definition of progress that accounts for the connectedness of our planet to the health of our minds, bodies, and communities?

The full paper discussed in this episode will be available on https://consilienceproject.org in the near future.

https://blog.commune.sh/weird-happenings/

After two months of development, a LOT has happened in the Weird project.

Weird is a web application built to increase the agency of internet users. We are building three interconnected pillars as our foundation:

  • Independent social sign-in rooted in the OIDC standard as keymaster
  • A personal web space creator
  • An actually-social network of shared purpose

In two weeks we're starting our pilot with the Norwegian Buddhist Foundation!

@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@saul we’re more of a facilitator for that kind of thing. Weird can help make the initial connection, but the message transmission would be left to any of a number of E2EE messengers we’d defer to (by integration), like , , , etc.

I don’t think there’s any sensible way to build a GenAI product without the artists (the library creators) effectively in charge.

Here’s one idea for how an artist-friendly AI assisted avatar service could work:

  1. Enter your real selfie
  2. Receive 64 renders in different styles
  3. See recommendations for artists who can be commissioned for a drawing in this style.

Please steal this idea @stablehorde @banchan et.al.

#TIL about #IPFS shortcomings in an interesting article by fiatjaf. I also encountered its massive slowness, while trying to to download archived files last year. This critique goes into a number of interesting details beyond that: #P2P https://njump.me/naddr1qqyxgdfsxvck2dtzqyghwumn8ghj7enfv96x5ctx9e3k7mgzyqalp33lewf5vdq847t6te0wvnags0gs0mu72kz8938tn24wlfze6qcyqqq823c8y87ll

@timj check out Iroh! https://iroh.computer

It’s so fast that we’ve not just used it for web app development, but also a low-latency multiplayer game.

Seriously pissed about this. Offering $10,000 in seed funding for a Deviant Art alternative built on ActivityPub. Q&A below or email your pitch to info@moth.social. https://slate.com/technology/2024/05/deviantart-what-happened-ai-decline-lawsuit-stability.html

Any dev out there willing to do a simple plugin for ?

A handful of indie devs are pitching in with working examples of FedCM, an important new identity standard with direct implications for the : https://wrily.foad.me.uk/sign-in-with-big-tech-only-or-sign-in-with-whom-i-prefer

The developer of LastLogin.io has implemented FedCM on his end, but he needs the help of a Discourse plugin developer to test the complete login pipeline with his own community forum.

Dear #lazyweb I need recommendations of blog platforms for non-technical users.

I want to avoid Medium and Substack.

They can’t self-host nor use things like Zola or Jekyll plus GitHub.

What’s a good choice?

@pvillega Ghost is great 👌
