I randomly wandered into a dumpling shop I’ve never heard of next to SFSU and, well I think I’ve found my favorite xiaolongbao in the city. It’s better than all the more famous ones!!

It’s called Mom Dumpling in park Merced. They make their own dumpling dough AND noodles. The crab and pork xlb is especially good, almost as good as the good ones I’ve had in Taiwan and Shanghai

eniatitova,
@eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

@jawnsy @skinnylatte OK, I'm invested in this. Where are we on Dumpling Specialist? I actually like their entrees and appetizers better than I like their dumplings, but the XLBs aren't bad.

@skinnylatte that strip mall punches about its weight. That taqueria is also very decent.

@skinnylatte have you been to Kingdom of Dumpling on Taraval btw? They sell bags of frozen to go that are my favorite. Would be curious to hear what you think

I started a thing! a new ritual? a project?

I borrow a lot of books from the library after placing a hold, so even though I pick them up at my home library, they’re originally from other branch libraries in the @sfpl system.

so going forward, I’m going to start returning them to their branch libraries of origin until I’ve visited all the different locations.

today: returning Hernán Díaz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trust to the Excelsior branch. It’s the best thing I’ve read this year.

What in the world!? It’s been ages since I had fast food and today I went to Carls Jr. and picked up food for three. One chicken sandwich, 5 piece chicken tenders, a combo meal and an extra fries. $42!! I almost drove away when I realized they weren’t pranking me 😅 That is just crazy. In & Out is the only reasonable fast food left it seems.

I'm really curious where everyone eats and drinks in their own neighborhood in #sanfrancisco .

Because you can't do better at picking a place to eat than someone who has surveyed the whole place, and decided that this is the place to frequent over and over.

I don't want destination restaurants.

I want to know your top 3 places: where do you go or get takeout from, over and over and over?

Plus maybe a coffee spot and a bar, if that's your thing?

I think it would be make such a good neighborhood guide for the whole city.

My recommendations for the Avenues (broadly defined) are in the next post, but please share yours!

I’ve been doing this thing that I’m calling “last wash 10 pm,” a photo series of old school laundromats in San Francisco.

growing up in New York, I spent a good portion of my Saturdays in a laundromat with my Dad. we would load up our granny cart with our family’s sheets, towels, and dirty clothes, and head down the block where we could get them all washed, dried and folded in a matter of hours.

they’re rarely glamorous, highly utilitarian third spaces many of us are forced to frequent. I had gotten spoiled by having in-unit laundry while living in San Francisco, but when I moved back to Brooklyn for 2 months in the fall of 2021, we became reacquainted again. quarters were out, and reloadable chip cards were in but pretty much everything else remained the same.

One of the things I love most about Underdogs Too, out by the beach, is that even though I am the definition of A Regular, they never treat me that way.

I come in. I get my (outdoor) table (they have great sidewalk dining, with heat lamps!). I’m allowed to look at a menu and decide what I want (even though what I want is the same every time: tortilla soup + taco for lunch/dinner, pancakes for brunch). no one treats me like their my bro but the service is always friendly and prompt: waiters I know give me a polite nod hello and that’s that.

I know that some people just want to go “where everybody knows your name” but I fucking hate it. I used to be a regular at a coffee cart in Manhattan, and had to stop going because it was literally impossible to order something besides “my usual”. the guy would see me coming down the block and pack it up before I got there. How do you say “oh actually I wanted a donut today” to that?!

so… I know we’re spending $2.5M fixing ip that wedding venue in Stern Grove but is that such a smart idea given that a giant chunk of the canyon wall slid down, flooding the dog playground in several feet of mud just days ago?

if this is not the most unhinged recipe instruction, I don't know what is:

"cook until beans are softened and bean skins curl up and split when you blow on them, about 2 hours."

in these here COVID times?!

Well, this is a fun email to get: when AQI hits > 150, @sfpubliclibrary will activate its emergency plan which requires closure of the majority of neighborhood library branches which “lack advanced mechanical ventilation systems.”

only the following branches will remain open: Main Library, Chinatown, Excelsior, Mission Bay, Ocean View, Ortega, Potrero, Richmond, Visitacion Valley and West Portal.

Main Library, Chinatown and Mission Bay will also act as Air Respite Centers.

and the piece de resistance

  1. a new topper of a cat holding a pink star with its tail, in honor of Banana

this is Frankie. She lives in the Tenderloin but escaped from a sitter at 35th and Judah while her Mom was away.

There’s been a sighting in South SF/Colma/Daly City. If you see her, please text Julie at the number on the flyer.

Please don’t try to chase her or catch her yourself.

this morning a nice man from Room & Board came to repair our barely year-old sofa with a tufted back. two buttons had come loose, you see.

“ah,” he said. “yes, sometimes people’s pockets get caught on them, or a cat likes to bite them.”

we all averted our eyes in the direction of the cat tower in the back of the room. well, most of us…

but he fixed it in minutes with no problem, and reminded us that his services are available for the life of the sofa.

so I guess it’s open season on couch buttons…
