DB ICE 731 Hamburg - Köln

A slowish route because all the infra is old. And it’s a ICE 1 from the 1980s, renovated more than a decade ago

But the ambience on board, the comfort of the seats, are still excellent. It’s like someone actually thought “what would passengers actually appreciate in a train interior?”

It doesn’t feel like packing as many people in as possible was the priority. And that’s so nice 😊

@jon I like the route via Recklinghausen somewhat more than the one via Dortmund. Less stops and avoiding Dortmund sometimes helps.

Totally logical. Not.

My trip Nuits-sous-Ravières to Berlin Südkreuz on Monday is all e-tickets except Strasbourg to Kehl, the section. Just collected the paper ticket at Lyon while passing here.

And yeah, I have a ticket split in Kehl because that’s the only way to get the best price for this connection. Which is also totally logical. Not.

@vicgrinberg @nawik Ich hatte mal angefangen Liu Cixin zu lesen. Fand ich aber nur teilweise gut. Die politisch/historischen Teile besser als den SciFi-Teil.

Stellt euch vor Deutschland hätte nie Russland sanktioniert und jetzt ruft ein Journalist dazu auf man sollte Produkte welche direkt die russische Wirtschaft und somit den russischen Krieg stärken boykottieren.

Ist das ein Grund aus dem ÖRR geworfen zu werden? Ist das antirussischer Rassismus? Nein...

(1/x) Die Hamas ist für mich unzweifelhaft eine schreckliche Terrororganisation. Aber die Siedlungspolitik der israelischen Regierung ist ebenso völkerrechtswidrig wie der Versuch Russlands, die Ukraine einzuverleiben. Deswegen die israelische Regierung oder Netanjahu faschistisch zu nennen, ist sicher hart und deplatziert, aber ich halte es im Spektrum der Meinungsfreiheit grundsätzlich für zulässig.

(2/x) Dass jemand das macht, der seine Reichweite aufgrund eines Medienberufes bezieht - sei es privat oder ÖRR - sollte nicht geduldet werden.
Ich erwarte gerade von Journalisten, auch mit arabischem Background, dass sie die besondere (u. begründete) Empfindlichkeit in Deutschland verstehen.
Ich erwarte auch, dass Kritik an Israel (auch unberechtigte) nicht automatisch als Antisemitismus gelabelt wird.

Let me tell you a story about two railways in two large European countries

In one, they’ve just completed the delivery of the biggest new fleet of high speed trains ever, and high speed trains run hourly on pretty much every line. Off peak tickets are cheap, and if you pay for a flexible ticket you can take any train.

In this country regional trains run hourly, are cheap to take (there’s a cheap national monthly pass) and passenger numbers are steadily rising.

@jon Is there in France a political discussion about SNCF? In Germany there are always such discussions about DB. Mainly infrastructure, but often closely linked to long-distance service.

@partim @jnbhlr @jon Yes, but it is Wissing. He talks about Infrastrukturfonds, which includes road construction. Organizations like Allianz pro Schiene demand a Schienenfonds, because there is not only a gap in rail financing between Germany and CH or AT, but also between rail financing and road financing.

@partim @jnbhlr @jon Beside “Why haven’t you done that twenty years ago?” the second central sentence seems me to be "It comes to late". The "Repriorisierung" DB is talking about means "everything later". And even the money for the later phases of Generalsanierung is not clear.
Beginning now with a new form of financing - when will effects take place?

@partim @jnbhlr @jon Yes, but it also depends on how politics trusts in DB. Dependable means also independent from shortterm political decisions. Compared to SNCF DB does the right things. @jon I can live with the yield management as DB is doing.

But I think, DB is not good in steering the occupation of trains (and informing its passengers about it).
The reasons are, on the one hand, the mixed system (e.g. reduced flex price with BC50 or even BC100), on the other hand, too many last minute changes (like me sitting on a shortened ICE this Tuesday) and delays, so that people take other trains than booked.

@jon A overall question seems to me: should there yield management without competiton?
The german fiction is, that Fernverkehr is not regulated by the government. This would be ok, if there were some really competition. Without, maybe the swiss system would also be ok. Or a upper limit for flex price set by an government agency (something like BAV in CH).

Fahren können sie das dennoch nicht, sie werden den RE nicht für die S-Bahn wegfahren.
