Just caught an episode of The Middle on NPR. I definitely had an "oh no, do we have to do this?" moment when I heard the show's blurb about how it's a show for people who don't identify with either U.S. party, but left it on to see how it would go.

The question posed by tonight's episode was whether our politicians have gotten too old, and I thought they ran a surprisingly nuanced conversation about topic of aging and how it affects all of us, but different people differently.

dynamic,

An important theme that came up in The Middle episode about the age of U.S. politicians was the idea that the real problem isn't age so much as money and barriers to entry.

The geriatrician that they brought on also noted that while people often fret about elders not being invested in the future, there are also problems with younger politicians needing to focus on short term outcomes because they are still developing their careers: their ambition leads them to compromise their values.

dynamic,

Other points of note in the episode included that groups with age diversity work well because people of different ages bring different perspectives, both because of where they are in life and because of what their lived experiences are, and that the older we get, the larger the diversity in where we are developmentally. The line used was "if you've met one 80-year-old, you've met one 80-year-old."

Huh. Is there a new(ish) Mastodon feature where opening content in a new tab automatically switches to single-column view?

I like what I'm seeing, and I think it's new?

dynamic,

@BradRubenstein

Neat. Thanks.

I'm thinking of blocking access to content on my site to anyone not running an ad blocker.

Thoughts?

dynamic,

@gcluley

I was having a kinda tangentially related thought, wondering how Google trying to make the broad web inaccessible to people with ad blockers might or might not interact with the increasing use of AI-generated nonsense by the corporate internet.

Are we going to end up with two internets, one where people are under continual surveillance and exposed to crap content, and another internet where people post their own stuff, share with humans, and try to keep the robots out?

dynamic, to random en-us

Hmm. Somehow the posts I made last night ended up as "Private" posts. Not sure how that happened.

dynamic,

@dynamic

Further observation: it appears that mid-text hashtags break Mastodon's view of Friendica posts.

I ended up editing the above post with the Friendica hashtag in order to correct this.

Quick report on my first foray into Friendica. It definitely has some things going for it, but I'm not sure how I feel, on balance.

:thread: (1/?)

dynamic,

Friendica impressions (2/?)

Good:

  • Comment threads are indented the way I want, which is nice
  • Being able to follow RSS feeds is pretty cool
  • You can assign your contacts to "groups" and use the groups as both feed filters and as visibility filters for your posts

Do I know anyone on #Friendica?

Any instance recommendations?

Is there anything I should know about finding an instance to try out?

dynamic,

@danie10

Cool. Any words of wisdom on selecting an instance?

I'd also be curious to know your reasons for maintaining both Mastodon and Friendica accounts. I.e., what does Mastodon have going for it that Friendica doesn't? Or is it more a case of just maintaining separate instance identities as many do with different Mastodon instances?

dynamic,

@danie10

Not all Friendica instances allow RSS posting? Do they all allow RSS reading?

I'd kind of assumed that all instances would have the same things enabled.

dynamic,

@danie10

That's really useful to know. One thing I've been seeing as I look at these Friendica instances is that they don't seem to have as much documentation of underlying values as Mastodon instances do. Do you have any tips on where to look to find out this kind of information on what modules are enabled?

    I'm honestly not sure. It feels like something that I might have done a couple times, but I don't remember specific examples, and it's definitely not a common occurrence for me?

    What are the best non-Mastodon Activity Pub platforms, and why?

    (boosts welcome)

    dynamic,

    I'm especially interested in hearing arguments for #ActivityPub platforms that are specifically designed to cultivate particular behavior and interaction patterns in users.

    dynamic,

    Not a lot of responses to my question about the best non-Mastodon ActivityPub platforms.

    To elaborate a bit, I'm specifically interested in information about the best-designed alternatives to Mastodon.

    Mastodon, being Twitter-like, was always rather clunky, but I'm not getting good vibes from the newest features, and I'm wondering if there are better ActivityPub platforms that are developed with a coherent design philosophy.

    dynamic,

    I'm not even particularly concerned with what the design philosophy is, as much as that there be one. That is, I'd like to be able to read a set of philosophical guiding principles and have a reasonable level of confidence that the developers will try to stick with those, and not (say) start making changes just because they happened to be on the wish list of some of the users.

    dynamic,

    @buermann

    Honestly, WriteFreely's philosophy writeup (paired with a platform that actually aligns with it) is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind.

    dynamic,

    @buermann

    WriteFreely doesn't happen to be what I'd look for in a blog platform --- I'd prefer something more like Livejournal / Dreamwidth where the blogger has the option to invite comments or not and then total control over moderation --- but the idea of philosophical alignment with interface design is a spot-on example of coherent design philosophy that I'm talking about.

    dynamic,

    @alx

    I haven't. What can you tell me about them?

    dynamic,

    @tfardet

    If you have more to say about Firefish and your reasons for being unconvinced, I'd love to hear about it!

    #Neuroscience question: So there's this celebrity neuroscientist(?) and evident asshole Andrew Huberman who has in several interviews said something that goes like "there are these 5 studies, 2 in humans, 2 in mice, & 1 published in Nature, showing that lateralized eye movement calms the amygdala", and that these findings were NOT in EMDR studies.

    Anybody happen to know what studies he's alluding to? Because he sure doesn't cite them & G Scholar's useless, prob bc wtf "calm the amygdala" omfg.

    dynamic,

    @siderea

    Well... uh, I don't know anything about Huberman or EMDR, but having done about 10 minutes of research, what I'm tripping over is the claim that these findings were not EMDR, because it sounds like EMDR is exactly the same thing as what he's describing.

    That said, a Google Scholar search for the words "lateralized", "eye", "movements", "mice", and "amygdala" (with no author specified) turns up this review paper by Andrew Huberman, which does cite references?

    Does that article give you the jumping off point you need?

    On Election Day 2024, which of these people will be on the ballot in half the states or more?

    #EvanPoll #poll

    dynamic,

    @evan

    Well, I answered Biden and Trump on the assumption that you were talking about presidential candidates only, so I guess fold that into your numbers?
