Ooooh should Pinball Dad stick his toe in the Linux Discourse

I've been on it since 2010, I guess I should maybe?

How about I stick my whole entire foot in, maybe if I poison it with my footstink then it'll die down a bit

dynamic,

@ifixcoinops

Does Ubuntu Mate come with scroll bars? Because that might switch me off of other Linux distros all by itself.

dynamic,

@ifixcoinops

Like, with up down arrows and everything? O_O

dynamic,

@ifixcoinops

Damn.

Knew it was too good to be true.

(I still use a laptop for most things, don't want to have to carry a mouse around, and two-finger scroll is a bitch.)

dynamic,

@ifixcoinops

I think it's even more wild that every single GUI desktop decided to take away an interface option that had been working well for everyone for two or three decades.

dynamic,

@ifixcoinops

(I'm at work right now so had the opportunity to use my mouse's scroll wheel and even that doesn't really behave the way I want it to.)

"There is no other definition of bigotry in the world that equates criticism of a state, even harsh and unfair criticism, with discrimination or bigotry against the state’s people. If one claimed that denunciations of the violent foundations of the Russian empire are 'anti-Slavic'[...] we would immediately see through that as just an instrumentalist defense of Russian state interests."

Thank you for sharing this. This article seems really important. I'm not Jewish, and I'd be interested in hearing more reactions from people who are...

Quote from article:
"The new antisemitism law would in effect silence vast swaths of Jews within educational institutions. It would in some ways be the most punitive law against Jews to be enacted in the U.S. since the Immigration Act of 1924."

I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

dynamic,

@grimalkina

I'm having some strange and I guess maybe ironic reactions to this post.

Your post is stirring up a lot of my own opinions as well as questions about what you mean, and I kind of would like to have a conversation with you about it, but I also find myself anxious about replying at all, and I'm not sure why!

dynamic,

@grimalkina

I think part of the issue here is that I still don't know what a "reply guy" is. I'd never heard the term until the large influx of users during Twitter Muskopocalypse.

I had the impression that a reply guy was someone unconnected to the original poster who shows up in replies and acts like they belong there, which hits a nerve because that's exactly the behavior that enabled me to make friends on Fedi.

But your phrase "drive by" that makes me think you mean something else?

dynamic,

@grimalkina

I think there's a broader thing where a lot of people have things that bother them about Mastodon and Fedi, and when one person complains about an aspect of the platform and culture, other people seem to hop in with "oh thank goodness someone else sees the problems", only in a lot of those threads I feel like maybe people don't even agree about what the problems are, and it's hard to tell whether real communication is occurring or not.

dynamic,

@grimalkina

Anyway, I don't know what a reply guy is. Am I being a reply guy?

dynamic,

@grimalkina

"I don't feel like it's very kind when folks treat someone's personal experience like a threat when it's just someone trying to navigate"

Er... did it sound like I did that? I certainly didn't see anything you wrote as a threat. I think maybe that's not what you meant because of the way you started your reply, but then I suddenly wasn't sure : )

Another ongoing discussion on the #SocialCoop forums is whether or not our instance should increase the character cap for posts.

I initially felt pretty favorable toward this idea, then agnostic, and am now finding myself feeling more negatively.

dynamic,

@flancian

As you can see, I was just getting warmed up ; )

dynamic,

@flancian

"I can't imagine wanting to limit other's freedom to post as they wish in this sense, so for me the 'right' position is clear (positive)."

This was my initial thinking as well, combined with the fact that I tend to be long-winded, but I don't think this is a simple matter of providing more choice.

dynamic,

@flancian

Extending the character limit without making any other changes to the interface would concretely change the writing experience for people who do appreciate being compelled to write more succinctly and / or who like breaking things up into microblog "threads", and there would be costs (although perhaps not highly visible ones) associated with this change.

dynamic,

@flancian

The "Show more" link is a pain point for me of the existing system. I refer to it in my thread.

(I'm not really going to fight for keeping our character caps low, but my preference would be to leave things alone.)

I love the premise of Codidact (https://www.codidact.com/), but I'm profoundly frustrated at their insistence that communities exist for discussing particular topics before people can start posting questions and answers.

What I'd like to see instead is someone doing the exact same project but with the ability to ask and answer questions on anything, and topics organized by user-curated tags.

Anyone know of projects using this model?

For sighted people with things to say about the idea of whether or not Mastodon instances disabling images for #WorldSightDay is useful activism, maybe we could start a separate thread here for that, rather than my previous toot?

Yes, I understand why you added the context, and I think that as author of the original post your reply made sense. I think leave the existing replies in place but don't add more?

dynamic, to accessibility

#Social.coop has been discussing whether to disable images on May 16 and October 10 for #WorldSightDay, as suggested here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112275637561897034.

One concern raised about this proposal is that it is symbolic and might not do anything to improve the lives of people with visual impairments.

I would like to hear perspectives from people with visual impairments on whether this kind of action is helpful.

It's just intrinsic to #ActivityPub that you can't share old locked (followers only, select list only, etc.) content with new followers / people newly added to your circles (etc.), isn't it?

Like, I think this isn't just a Mastodon problem, but I'd like confirmation.
