I’ve been reluctant to accept the premise that CEOs are prime jobs for replacement by AI, but this CEO just up and said he’s directly replaceable by so 🤷 https://mastodon.social/@wklj/112555818429417630

If you use Bartender and haven’t received the update with the new code signing certificate, DISABLE UPDATES NOW.

If you updated to anything beyond version 5.0.52, TURN OFF PRIVACY PERMISSIONS TO THE APP and delete it.

Remember, Bartender needs permission to record your screen to work. This can get bad. https://sfba.social/@drahardja/112561678013832666

@thaddeus The app uses screen recording to work around problems in Sonoma (I think it uses image recognition to tell which menu extra is which). It’s possible that this new shady owner acquired the app because it had its users granting this permission.

Someone is selling a $15k Faraday cage for the for “doomsday” EMP attacks. 🤣🤣🤣

Literally a tinfoil hat for your douchepanzer.

I guess they figure OTA software updates can wait while they’re protecting you from the zombie apocalypse.

It’s possible that instead of gaining $45B this year, Elon could lose $3B of profit to this lawsuit. Sounds great to me.

@danielpunkass I’d rather not call more attention to the bad behavior of known dipshits. It can lead to the Streisand Effect, in reverse.

Remember that at bottom, Elon is a spoiled, needy brat thirsty for attention. I’d rather not give him more of what he craves.

drahardja, to windows
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

So it seems that what does is take screenshots, sorts windows by application, then runs each window through an image-to-text model and logs its contents, capturing text, web domain information, and the topic of the content. This information is then logged in a searchable local database.

This has to be combined with some way to get back to the content, right? So if I searched for a topic in the future, Windows has to be able to restore the app and the document that you were viewing. So there has to be some URL or file path associated with each window content.

I know people are freaked out about this feature, but I think it’s basically Spotlight on steroids. I’m actually not that freaked out about it if it’s local-only, and I think this can actually be useful for someone with like me who loses content all the time.

The real questions: what privacy-protection mechanisms are present, who gets to access to this data, how easily it can be exfiltrated?

https://mastodon.social/@detective/112513529733646088

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

So I think people are worried about screenshots still showing content of files that have been deleted. I think I’m ambivalent about that. On the one hand, it’s great to be able to search for things in the past, even when the files are no longer on disk. On the other, some people may have the expectation that the data in deleted files are gone everywhere.

I think as more apps adopt the UserActivity API and accurately report the path or URL of the data that it displays, the better Recall can be about ensuring that search results from deleted files are never shown to the user, and are reaped from disk storage.

@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@jnk I respect your position. Yes, I think this all hinges on whether you trust Microsoft/Windows or not.
