gpg is the worst.

Generating a new set of keys on the new nitrokey3... saved my pin/admin pin in pass. Generates for a long while, then needs the pin to make the signing key... but I can't get the pin from pass while there is a gpg prompt up for the nitrokey. :( While trynig to figure out what arcane gpg command line will not use the same pinentry, it times out and I have to start again.

@nirik 1 is on, 2 is off, 3 is permanent? 🤣

related: have you tried sq (sequoia-sq)? its command line is supposed to be less inscrutable than that of gpg

@nirik ah, yeah ... though I think somebody was working on a smart-card backend. I'll try to remember to ask about it 🤔

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring the Mozilla Location Service which provides an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰

https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃

decathorpe,
@decathorpe@mastodon.social avatar

@cassidy I had noticed the quality of the service decline in recent years ... GNOME / firefox always put my location hundreds of miles away from where I actually am (though at least still in the correct country) ... still, sad to see it go

Time for this week’s and news video, with yet again some dire news for X11, as will get rid of it in RHEL 10.

We also have the Plasma 6 beta, with extra features added, we have some big things happening for Wayland, HDR, Pipewire and the Linux desktop in general, and the usual cool stuff happening for Linux !

RHEL 10 is planned to drop the Xorg server (and some related components), but the X11 protocol will still be supported via Xwayland.

I know, it's pedantic, but every time you say something like "distro is dropping X11" it's like the sound of nails on a blackboard for me 😂

I've been on the @fedora Engineering Steering Committee for 5 years. My fifth term is nearing the end and I decided I will take a break. I shared my reasons with other #Fedora engineers at https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/RR26HUMKNM2ALJFFLQQICO4REDNMZLML/

It saddens me greatly, but it is necessary.

Thank you - you put into words something that I had trouble with myself. Reading your ML post, I realized that I feel the same. And removed myself from the nominations.

Not sure if I'm just exhausted, or if things are different than they were a few years ago, but it's just not the same.

vwbusguy, to firefox
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

Before #electron, there were many apps built upon #Firefox's engine via xulrunner. It's very unfortunate that #Mozilla ceded this space and allowed Chrome-based apps to fill in the gap. Regardless of your opinion about browser based apps, it's unfortunate that they're such a platform monopoly now.

decathorpe,
@decathorpe@mastodon.social avatar

@vwbusguy

good news: there's two projects that kind of try to make this better

tauri uses the platform's native rendering engine and doesn't bundle chromium

and as far as I know, servo is also being worked on as a figure alternative to embedded chromium (so gecko might kind of make a comeback, in a roundabout way)

Why the heck #cargo is using non-windows target dependencies as default on a windows box? #rust #rustlang

/me goes to cry in a corner

decathorpe,
@decathorpe@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal It shouldn't use them, but they need to be present for feature + dependency resolution due to a limitation of cargo (which is why we patch out non-Linux target-specific dependencies from Rust crates in Fedora)

decathorpe,
@decathorpe@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal I assume you have a similar target block for non-windows OS? you might need to be careful with feature unification ... is it possible you're enabling sequoia-openpgp in some other way with default features enabled or something like that?

decathorpe,
@decathorpe@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal for anybody reading along: yes, it was a problem with feature unification across different target-specific dependencies.

and the reason it didn't happen in another similar project was that the other project used the version 2 resolver with the 2021 edition, while this project used the version 1 resolver with the 2018 edition. updating to the 2021 edition with the "smarter" v2 cargo resolver made the problem go away.

there's now official packages for some really cool #Rust projects in the pipeline for #Fedora - nushell, helix, cargo-deny/cargo-audit, ntpd-rs, ruff, rustup ...

once those are done I want to look into zellij as well, though that also pulls in basically all of wasmer 🙃

looks like having invested a lot of time into making our packaging tools better is starting to pay off 🐣

In my opinion, what most people are missing about the @AsahiLinux and @marcan efforts is that most system integrators like Dell, Lenovo don't dedicate even a tenth as much time to Linux support as the Asahi team does These companies usually restrict themselves to ensuring vendor driver availability and some lightweight QA which more often than not results in an experience fraught with quirks from faulty hardware support that you have to add on top of the usual Linux desktop UX caveats.
