i know it’s not a big deal for many, but for me it’s the first time feeling like i own the malware world 😍

cyb3rkitties, to random

friends, it seems like the struggle will finally be over: today, i received an offer that i intend to accept for a cyber threat intelligence analyst role! if all goes well, i’ll be doing cti work, as well as malware re and writing detections.

huge thanks go to this community, to all the friends and colleagues who have supported me throughout these intense months of job hunting and being a new parent. here’s to all of you 🍻

HELP! i’ve been doing some threat hunting in open directories and i found a tool that supposedly executes a payload in a fileless fashion called exewho2, but i can’t find any reference to it anywhere. anyone know what i’m talking about?

here’s a total n00b question on for infosec work: in my ignorance, i thought it wasn’t possible to work fully remotely under a secret clearance but i just saw a job posting stating just that. how does that work?

cyb3rkitties,

@nf3xn wow, i didn’t know that. the only detail listed was the level at secret, but i’m not sure what that means in practice.

recruiter: i have a role that’s the PERFECT FIT FOR YOU, they’re looking for a reverse engineer

me: cool, tell me more!

recruiter: it’s an embedded security company looking for someone doing vulnerability research on firmware

me: lol, how much are they willing to train?

cyb3rkitties,

@nf3xn i mean, i’ve never REd firmware or done any hardware hacking, so i’d be pretty much starting from scratch on that (and they’re looking for a sr person). i think the recruiter is convinced that doing malware RE and doing vuln research is the same thing just because the second mentions RE as one of the main duties 😅

good people! after three months of searching and a (now 3-month-old) baby, i’m still looking for a remote job in in the US.

what i’m good at:

any help is appreciated 🙏

cyb3rkitties,

@aral 🙏🙏

cyb3rkitties,

@kkarhan absolutely!

cyb3rkitties,

i’m usually a positive and optimistic person, but today shit’s hitting hard.

i’ve been unemployed for three months, which i spent raising my baby (currently a little over 3 months) and in endless hours of job applications, interview prep, assignments, and training. either i receive an automatic rejection email or i get all the way to the end of the process and then they choose another candidate.

cyb3rkitties,

unfortunately, i can’t just “take any job” because childcare is ridiculously expensive and that salary needs to be enough for that and for my mortgage/ bills. i could do consulting to have a more flexible schedule but who would hire someone with just a couple of years of experience? yeah, nobody.

i’m not sure where i’m going with this, it’s just a bad day and i needed to vent.it feels like a chicken and egg type situation with no end in sight.thanks for reading.

cyb3rkitties,

@aral i’m definitely due for another job search post. and thank you so much, i super appreciate that! i’ll tag you when i create it, if that’s okay?

cyb3rkitties,

@nuncio yeah, that is nuts! and thanks for sharing your company page, i’m gonna take a look 🙏🙏

cyb3rkitties,

@aral 🙏🙏

I use a lot of Filters on Mastodon.

It really helps with having much more peaceful timelines and not reading more doom than I can handle. All Filters have different labels, and the labels can combine!

Yesterday I saw a 3-labels filtered toot,
and I shivered :blobcatfearful:

By the way, if you are not sure how to use Filters yourself, here's how: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/109323462169819778

cyb3rkitties,

@Em0nM4stodon this is exactly what i was looking for —thanks for sharing!

    @nf3xn i haven’t navigated it as much, but i used it in the past to find local businesses—particularly helpful when i moved to areas where i didn’t know anyone.

    Most of my friends being elder millennials is great. Sometimes I get to shortcut figuring things out because they just give me the answers. It would be awesome for dating, except for the part where I usually just ignore all their advice and find out the hard way.

    cyb3rkitties,

    @malwaretech why follow the advice when you can be creative and come up with new, interesting ways to make the biggest mistakes? 😎

    i need some advice. when you’re job hunting, how do you deal with horribly negative reviews on glassdoor? i’m so torn because a position might sound great on paper, but reviews make the company seem like an awful place to work at. 😕

    cyb3rkitties,

    @C8H10N4O2 yup, it seems like finding a current employee who could share info off the records might be a great first step to understand more!

    interview processes these days: recruiter call > chat with hiring manager > technical panel interview > week-long assignment > technical debrief > getting ghosted by recruiter.

    who else is burnt out by job hunting?! :blobcatgooglycry:
