@schizanon Perhaps you've already done this but roasted and seasoned they make a delicious snack. If you hull them they have all kinds of applications. I like to roast pepitas and use them in pestos, stuffings, in rice etc. Good luck!
So sad to read the lead singer of April Wine, Myles Goodwyn, has died. If you're not #Canadian you probably haven't heard of them and they didn't make the same mark as some other Canadian #music, but they had some truly great songs. So many rowdy summer nights with "the boys" featured April Wine playing in the background.
So this is the other shoe dropping. Apparently #Microsoft has offered work to any current #OpenAI employees who want to join the new business unit.
505 of their 700 employees have signed a letter voicing their intent to leave if Altman isn't hired back. Notice the first name on the list? Mira Murati, their CTO and the "interim CEO" they appointed Friday.
Open AI is finished. This is how you dismantle your company in a single move.
Funny thing about me is that I still check to see if my account is still banned on #TruthSocial (it is) when I could just install the mobile app and create a new account, but I refuse to do that on principle. If they unbanned my account though I'd be back on it like an addict.
As usual they forgot about us 😂 #GenX or Xennials were. here first, using stuff like ICQ, MIRC, Friendster, MySpace. We were the pioneers of blogging, penning our thoughts on Diaryland and Geocities.
Also, what's this lament that there's nowhere to go? If anything we have more #SocialMedia options than ever.
Some are #Blogging more, some are in the #Fediverse#Mastodon & some are stubbornly on #X & #Facebook
We are just scattered.
@liztai I'd like to add that BBSes, FidoNet, and newsgroups are also social media, simply preceding the term.
The Fediverse has taught me that there's still great content out there, it's just hiding in the nooks and crannies.
What do you think? Does great content need to stay hidden beneath the radar? It feels like once you shine a light on cool places someone always shows up to tell you what you're allowed to say, monetize it, or intentionally ruin it for sport.
@schizanon "The GOP is in tatters. Trump is the nominee but he's universally hated by traditional conservatives. The right wing vote is splintered and we have a beloved progressive who consistently polls that he would defeat Trump. How could we fuck this up?"
'Well, we could fix the primaries to nominate the politician universally hated by the right, thus reuniting them behind a single purpose: to keep a Clinton out of the White House.'
@schizanon Talk about bad to worse. In about 3 more posts I'm expecting you to announce you've accidentally opened an inter-dimensional portal into hell. :(
@schizanon It sounds like you've worked in tech for a while, so none of this comes as a surprise to you. Tech always works flawlessly until you really need it to.
I can't say how relieved I am that after all these months of being underwater in my #BTC investment I've finally broken through! I've finally reached the point where it only needs to double again for me to break even! #sarcasm#bitcoin#crypto
@Teri_Kanefield As always thanks for the wonderful insights. Really helps anchor a topic that interests us all but where we may not understand the legal subtleties.
The fact that two former Trump attorneys have now confirmed — via guilty pleas — that Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election included criminal acts should be a much bigger story.
Personal opinion: I'm not sure it's that no one cares, it's that no mainstream media cares to report on it accurately. There is no such thing as mainstream news anymore. It's infotainment and it exists to sell products. Nothing more.
Reporting on it as a "he said, she said" scenario is salacious and draws viewers. As soon as you say "Trump is already guilty, that is a finding of fact" you alienate part of your advertising base.
This bread was freezer burned then sat in the open air getting stale for the last two days before I made my French toast.
With no moisture left in the bread, it soaks up the cream and egg mix for French toast. (I add generous salt, a bit of maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla.)
In fact, my bread soaked in the egg mix for over 4 hours. These two slices absorbed 3 eggs and a half-cup of cream. #cooking#food
@snarkysteff Of course harkening back to its French name, "pain perdu". It's always been meant as a way to rescue stale bread, and an utterly delicious one at that.
@snarkysteff Exactly. One of the best uses of stale (not dessicated) bread is bread crumbs. People who buy those bone-dry bread crumbs from the grocery store are doing themselves such a disservice. Bread crumbs are supposed to be made with fresh bread past its prime, not sand. 😂
"The FBI released new data last week showing that violent crime is down in America, but that hate crimes are up. This is completely at odds with right-wing narratives about the United States, which portrays surging violence in lawless 'Democrat-run' cities. Instead, the data show a different picture: violence is down, except against the very social groups that are targeted by right-wing tropes and the MAGA movement."
@wdlindsy Very fascinating to follow the links all the way to the FBI CDE database. It shows violent crime per 100,000 people peaked in 1992 at ~760 and in 2022 had dropped to half that. A 50% drop in 31 years.
This stands in stark contrast to the fear mongering of the right, which relies on the fact that nobody actually looks up the statistics. They just look at the sensationalism of the mainstream news-infotainment cycle and assume the world is falling apart.
@brewsterkahle Libraries are one of the foundational components of a free society. Through them all men and women are equal and have access to an education regardless of ethnicity, income, or background.
Funding for libraries should be as automatic as funding for roads, clean water, a judicial system, or free lunches for school children (ahem).
I feel like #game#design is still trapped in the 1980s. The paradigm of "play, die, repeat" was invented because games like #Pacman only had one map. The only way to make the game last was through escalating difficulty.
Now we have massive, multiplayer, persistent worlds where we... play, die, repeat. It's been 40 years!
Just give me a game with an amazing universe where I'm rewarded for #exploring every lush inch of it. You don't need the death cycle to keep games engaging anymore.
When I tell em to use an #adblocker my partner dismisses me saying ey sometimes see things ey want to buy because the ads are so well targeted to em.
But it's not the content of the #ads that's the problem; it's that they are there, taking up my #attention. The more targeted they are, the more of my attention they absorb which encourages the #advertisers to advertise more.
