One person was killed and another was seriously injured during the storm that ripped through Greeley late Tuesday night.

During the heaviest period of hail and rain, crews from Greeley, Platte Valley, Evans and Windsor rescued 10 people. Some were pulled from stranded cars and others had to be pulled from their flooded basement apartments through windows.

All four gates opened on the Morrow Point Dam in Montrose County for the first time since 2017 last week, providing a spectacular display of force as water spills into the Gunnison River, the fifth largest tributary to the Colorado River.

While the flow from 15-foot-wide gates was intriguing to tourists and locals, the water was intended to simulate spring runoff conditions to protect the Colorado pikeminnow, razorback sucker and three other endangered fish species.
